S
ure, you can drive across the Golden
Gate Bridge and see a few nice redwoods, all the while bumping into hordes of
fellow San Franciscans and over-stressed vacationers. But for a more peaceful and aweinspiring redwood encounter, consider visiting
the Avenue of the Giants and Redwood National
Park a few hours to the north, where with nary
another soul nearby one can walk among the
world’s tallest living things.
Redwoods grow from Big Sur to the Oregon
border, but only on Northern California’s Redwood Coast do they achieve their primeval glory. Untouched groves stagger the senses with
their size, but are surprisingly easy to access.
Humboldt County, home to the tallest and largest stands of old growth redwoods, offers the
best scenic drives and trails to experience these
giants. In fact, half the world’s virgin redwoods
are in our two park systems, Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park.
The latter is home to the world’s tallest tree, a
whopper named Hyperion that stands six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty.
To many, a redwood grove is a natural cathedral. There is a sense of peace and reverence as
you walk among the pillars of trees and aisles of
ferns, while sunlight filters through the canopy
as if through stained glass. People come from
all over the world to make the pilgrimage. They
find that the trees are only the beginning of a
Northern California adventure. After rambling
through the groves, you can retreat to the Victorian seaports and old fishing villages like Eureka
and Trinidad; perfect settings for art, food and
wine discoveries. Humboldt County would be
more than happy to share the same wonders
with our “southern” California neighbors in the
Bay Area. The fresh air, wide open forests and
relaxed rural lifestyle are sure to seduce. And
yes, you can drive your car through a living tree.
In fact, there are three of them along Highway
101 either in or near Humboldt County. Here are
some suggested big tree attractions to further
entice.
The Avenue of the Giants is quite simply the
best place to view redwoods from the road. This
31-mile road, about an hour south of Eureka,
winds through series after series of impressive
old growth groves. It parallels Highway 101 and
offers a memorable alternate drive as you enter Humboldt County from the south. Flat with
gentle curves, the road passes by small towns,
campgrounds and plenty of redwood and river
trails. Notable stops include the Dyerville Giant,
perhaps the world’s tallest tree when it toppled
to the ground 20 years ago; the Rockefeller Forest, the largest single stand of virgin redwoods
at 10,000 acres; and the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree.
In Redwood National Park, about an hour
north of Eureka, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove
is a sublime redwood experience that includes
an easy two-mile loop, ushering you past towering old growth redwoods, fern-covered glades
and goose pens; large natural cavities inside
the trees, which over the years have sheltered
everything from domestic fowl to livestock to
people. President Johnson dedicated the grove
when the park was created in 1968.
Also in Redwood National Park, the Newton
Drury Parkway rivals the Avenue of the Giants
for scenic old growth splendor. Stop at Big Tree
and the Corkscrew Tree, or take a short detour
to Fern Canyon, a prehistoric gorge with sheer
walls draped in rare and beautiful cryptogamous
plants. Along the way, keep your eyes open for
half-ton Roosevelt elk grazing in the meadows,
including in front of the Prairie Creek Visitor
Center.

near Trinidad, California from select grapes grown in small vineyards from the
Lake, Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa and Amador
appellations. The winery is located 1,500 feet
from the Pacific about 40 feet above sea level.
So close to the ocean, temperatures remain
cool throughout the year resulting in the perfect conditions for wine making and aging.
These cooler temperatures during fermentation allow for greater extraction of aromatics
and flavors from the skins of the grapes, resulting in richer, more distinctive wines.

lk Prairie Vineyard was established on
Fruitland Ridge in 1992 which soon after
proved to be the ultimate spot to produce Pinot
Noir wine grapes.
Our 10 acre estate vineyard and winery is
located 1,200 above the ancient redwoods in
southern Humboldt County. Our vines produce
small yields of small grapes with intense flavors
and soft tannins. Warm days and cool nights
with a kiss of fog rising from the Eel River below help create the magic. Currently producing
fewer than 700 cases per year, we truly handcraft our wines starting with slow fermentations in small half-ton macro bins located outdoors in the shade of the winery. We take turns
hand punching the must caps. The wines are
handled minimally and aged in 30% new French
oak, unfiltered and unrefined. Great wines truly
do begin in the vineyard.
