Lesson learned. Do not offend the MG Gods. We just returned from French Lick, Indiana where we attended MG 2014. I made the mistake of taking my Mazda Miata instead of a proper little British car and I apparently upset Scions of Lucas. Of the approximately 350 MGs that attended the convention from all over the U.S. and Canada, I appear to be the only one that did not make it home as scheduled. A strange electrical issue left us stranded in a 30 mile long traffic jam that resulted in an hour and a half tow and a night in a motel in Terre Haute as my punishment. In true Lucaslike fashion, the issue resolved itself without revealing the cause and we were able to drive home the next morning. I promise to “Pray the Rostyle” and say a few “Hail Morrises” to repent my sins. MG 2014 itself was wonderful. The Village of French Lick, with its two huge Victorian resorts was a fabulous venue. Can you say Swanky? Those 350 or so cars and their approximately 500 occupants enjoyed breathtaking scenery, twisty roads, great food, camaraderie, and, of course, Midwestern heat and humidity. MG 2015 will be in cooler Niagara Falls. The St. Louis MG Club was well represented. Robert Rushing and Simon Dix were heavily involved in the planning of the event, web site development and Consours judging. John Mangle reprised his tech session on rubber bumper and Rostyle renovation and Bob Bensinger was pressed into service at the last minute to give a well-received electrical tech session. About a dozen local cars made the trip. Bringing home awards were Bob Strathmann with an Honorable Mention in Concours with his early 1962 MGB, Bob Bensinger got a Certificate of Merit for his 1974 B in Concours and Simon Dix took top class honors in his MkIV B. They call MGs the “Friendly Marque” and Bob B certainly lives up to it, spending over two hours helping a stranded MG owner get going out on the backroads of Indiana. Not to cool off completely from the hot week in Indiana, club members were out in force at the June Cars and Coffee and the Belleville Bicentennial Car Show at Oliver C. Joseph’s on the 21st. Upcoming events include the July 14 club meeting at Lotawanna Grill in ILLINOIS, a couple of British Invasions and at least one cool(er) drive. Check the club web site for details. Hoping you all have a very safe, fun and Happy Independence Day! Safety Fast! Lee PAGE 3 THE ST. Some MG Trivia - Booker T (Jones) & the M.G.'s From Wikipedia "For many years, the "official" story was that the band name "The M.G.'s" was meant to stand for "Memphis Group", not the MG sports car. However, this has proved not to be the case. Musician and record producer Chips Moman, active in Stax Records when the band was formed, for many years claimed that the band was named after his MG sports car, and only after he left the label did Stax's publicity department declare that "M.G." stood for "Memphis Group". To lend some credibility to this story, Moman had played with Jones (Booker T.) in an earlier Stax backing group called the Triumphs, which was also named after his car. Jones, in an interview on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, confirmed Moman's account of the group name's origins in 2007. Jones has re-confirmed this story on several occasions since, most recently on a May 9, 2012 appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Stax historian Rob Bowman has averred that the reason the label obscured the story of the meaning of the name "The M.G.'s" (and concocted the "Memphis Group" explanation) was to avoid any possible claims of trademark infringement from the manufacturers of the car". The July meeting will be held on Monday, July 14th at Lotawata Creek Southern Grill 311 Salem Pl, Fairview Heights, IL Meeting begins at 7:00pm, Social Hour starts at 6:30pm "The St. Louis Metro Gazette (SLMG)" is a publication of the MG Club of St. Louis and remains the property of the club.
