Lifetime achievement The University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) network is a partnership between the University of Plymouth and local colleges that brings degrees to your doorstep. Made up of colleges throughout the South West and working closely with employers, we provide university education, facilities and resources in a local setting. What can UPC do for me? We can offer you all the benefits of a large university with all the advantages of our partner colleges’ smaller community atmosphere. As a UPC student, you will enjoy the support and resources that your college can provide – as well as the University of Plymouth’s wide range of facilities. 16 1 2 1 PENWITH COLLEGE 2 CORNWALL COLLEGE (CAMBORNE AND ROSEWARNE) 3 4 6 5 CORNWALL COLLEGE (SALTASH) 7 CORNWALL COLLEGE (STOKE CLIMSLAND) PLYMOUTH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE 13 EXETER COLLEGE 14 BICTON COLLEGE 15 WEYMOUTH COLLEGE 16 NORTH DEVON COLLEGE SOMERSET COLLEGE OF ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY 3 CORNWALL COLLEGE (FALMOUTH) 8 4 TRURO COLLEGE 9 PLYMOUTH COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION 17 5 CORNWALL COLLEGE (ST AUSTELL) 10 ESTOVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE 18 CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE 19 HIGHLANDS COLLEGE, JERSEY 11 THE JOHN KITTO COMMUNITY COLLEGE That means you can: ● gain membership of the main university library ● access electronic learning support through the web-based student portal ● become a member of the university student union ● gain access to the university’s sporting facilities ● join the university orchestra or choirs ● join any of the many university sporting clubs available (and, of course, play in their teams) ● get help with finding part-time work though the university’s Earn and Learn service ● gain assistance ( through your college) from the university’s support and advice resources (like the student funding team, the disability assist scheme and the careers’ service) ● have the opportunity of progressing to the university’s wide range of honours degrees. And it doesn’t matter what age you are. Our students come from all walks of life. Some are school leavers, some are not so young people who want to broaden their life experience, some are employees who want to increase their chances of advancement and some are people who want to change their work direction. Whether you’re able to study full or part-time, there is likely to be something at UPC for you. 17 18 12 13 14 15 m m el y pf ul su p tiv e.” “The staf f an d oth er stu den ts on th e co ur se ha ve be en i 19 s en l he d an r po 3 What sort of facilities can I expect? In terms of academic study, all UPC students have the same rights and status as other University of Plymouth students. In addition, you will be able to benefit from the services that the College can provide – as well as from certain extra support and resources on offer at the University’s main campuses. The Disability Assist and the Earn and Learn part-time employment services are both available to UPC students – as are the University’s career service, its library, its mature students’ advice and guidance service and the expertise of its student funding team. Your college may also have its own student union liaison officer. So why should I consider UPC? Because… ● Studying locally is cheaper and more convenient ● Many courses are designed with the help of local employers and are aimed at providing local employment opportunities ● Flexible study – both full and part-time – makes it easier to find the time to learn ● Local colleges can offer top quality education in an environment that is smaller and more personal ● There is usually guaranteed progression to the next qualification level for those who want to continue to learn What are foundation degrees? The foundation degree is a new higher education qualification that has been specifically designed to increase employment and career progression prospects. They are often designed in close collaboration with local employers and many can be taken full-time in two years - or longer on a part-time basis – giving you the flexibility to both earn and learn. Foundation degrees are a qualification in their own right and people with foundation degrees can use the letters FdA (for arts-based subjects) or FdSc (for science-based subjects) after their names. Foundation degrees are designed to lead directly to employment but most of them will also provide entry to the final year of an honours degree at the University of Plymouth. 4 Who are they for? Foundation degrees are for anyone wanting to study for a higher education intermediate level vocational qualification. Students may be employees who want to progress in their careers, or people returning to work after a career break. They may be ‘A’ Level students who want a work-related qualification, Advanced Modern Apprentices, people who have GNVQs, NVQ Level 3 or ACCESS qualifications and are seeking the next level up – in fact they are for anyone who wants to improve their skills, understanding and knowledge in line with employers’ needs. How can I find out more? For further details about foundation degrees or any of the courses listed on the following pages, please get in touch with the relevant institution direct. Alternatively, for more general information about what UPC can offer, visit our website at www.plymouth.ac.uk How do I apply? Please contact the relevant college direct and ask for an application form. For full-time courses you should apply through UCAS. 5 Bicton College of Agriculture Extended Degrees Agriculture, Food or Land Use Certificate in Higher Education Agriculture Animal Science (Management and Welfare) Animal Science (Veterinary Health Studies) Equine Studies Horticulture Outdoor Leisure Management Playwork Foundation Degrees Outdoor Leisure Management Playwork Agriculture Animal Science (Management and Welfare) Animal Science (Veterinary Health Studies) Horticulture Environmental Arts and Crafts Equine Studies Higher National Certificates Bicton College East Budleigh Budleigh Salterton Devon EX9 7BY Tel: 01395 562400 Email: enquiries@bicton.ac.uk Website: www.bicton.ac.uk Agriculture Countryside Recreation Management City of Bristol College Foundation Degrees Law Higher National Diplomas Brunel Centre Ashley Down Road Bristol BS7 9BU Tel: 0117 904 5000 Email: enquiries@cityofbristol.ac.uk Website: www.cityofbristol.ac.uk 6 Communication and Computer Networks Computing Computing (Business Information Technology) Computing (Software Engineering) Cornwall College Cornwall College is situated on 6 different sites in Cornwall – Camborne Pool Redruth College (CPR) Duchy College in Rosewarne near Camborne (DRO) Duchy College at Stoke Climsland near Callington (DSC) St Austell College (STA) Saltash College (SAL) and the College of Falmouth (FAL). He wanted to join his father in the construction industry but knew that qualifications were important if he wanted to achieve his ultimate career ambition of becoming a site manager. Ni gel At 19, Nigel enrolled on a National Certificate in Sear les Building and Civil Engineering at Plymouth College of Further Education. He then progressed to the Higher National Certificate. With the NHC under his belt, Nigel applied to the University of Plymouth for a place on the BSc (Hons) course in Building Surveying and the Environment. Thanks to his previous training, he was not only accepted but also exempted from the first year of the three year programme. On completion of his degree Nigel wrote to three of the major construction companies in Devon for a site manager trainee position. He was offered a placement by all of them. 13 Course finder Here is a full list of courses offered by our partner colleges Certificate in Higher Education Agriculture (Bicton) Animal Science (Cornwall
