Message

New Road Captain Training
As many of you know, the Board decided a couple of months ago to enhance the Road Captain requirements for all
members who want to become Road Captains. The new standards for Road Captain will consist of a written “test”, a
practical road test, as well as requirements for incident management and First Aid classes.
Don’t get scared; the test questions will be on the web so you have all year to look at them and the practical test will be
standardized so everyone will know what to expect and have an opportunity to practice the ride if you want. The
incident management and First Aid class will be geared toward helping you in case an unfortunate event should occur if
you are leading or sweeping a ride. Current Road Captains will not have to retake the test unless you want to for your
own education or information.
Advertise your Business
The Board discussed having a “Business” page on the web to help identify those members that have a business or
particular talent that other members can draw upon. This is an idea only and we are interested in how many folks
would be interested and if it is worth the space on the web. Example, if you have a Bail Bond business, a few of our
members would like to be able to call upon you in the event….
OK, lets say you need a finish carpenter or a machinist or a glazier; we have members who have these talents and
would appreciate your business. Send me or Jozef (webmaster) an e-mail with 1-2 lines about your business/contact
info.
MS150 Bicycle Escort.
It is time to start thinking about the MS150 bicycle escort event. As many of you know, this is an event that not only is
fun to attend but our presence is much appreciated. The many “thank you’s” from the riders is proof of how much we
are appreciated. Last year I assisted on 1 medical emergency and two wrecks: and that was on Saturday alone.
Help is also needed at our Rest Stop if you don’t care to ride and escort the bicyclist. We usually keep with the
Hawaiian theme and hand out leis to the riders who stop by to refuel and rehydrate.
We have 15 rooms reserved at the Best Western this year in Mt. Vernon for the nights of September 11 & 12. Make
sure you contact Karen Penewell if you want one of these rooms reserved for you. She can be reached at 425/2601113 or KPenewell@aol.com . Let her know if you will be volunteering at a rest stop or escorting the bicyclist. acted at:
Slow Ride Contest
Between the June and July meetings Eastside Harley and Eastside HOG will be conducting the slow ride motorcycle
contest. The idea is to ride between 2 points at the slowest possible speed. The rider who is the slowest, will win a
$100 gift certificate from Eastside Harley. Your ride must be witnessed by a HOG board member or an employee of
Eastside Harley. You can try as many times as you want.
Ya Gotta Go There
The Fall City Roadhouse is where the Colonial Inn once was. Although I still feel the La Boomba Burger at the
Riverside Tavern cannot be beat, the Fall City Roadhouse offers a good burger, very good menu and one of the best
Bloody Marys I have ever had. The prices are a little high but the quality of food makes it worth it. This is one of the
places you would want to take your significant other for a bike ride and nice dinner. The Fall City Roadhouse is at the
main intersection where Hwys 202 and 203 meet up.

Bike Blessing

All week had been terrible weather wise. There was even a rare funnel cloud in Snoqualmie Valley near my home on
Friday the day before the event on June 5th. The weather forecasters stuck to their guns and continued to predict
a sunny day on Saturday. Hard to believe when it was pouring buckets the night before. I woke to a glorious
sunny morning and thankfully the bike blessing was going to have good weather. We had 25 members on 18
motorcycles show up for the event. Pastor Mark Johnson of the Monroe United Methodist Church presided over
the festivities.
Pastor Mark provided an inspirational blessing to kick off our riding season. After the blessing we all retired to my
backyard and proceeded to have one kick butt BBQ. Several folks brought wonderful side dishes which is no
easy task on a motorcycle. In addition to a great memory the participants donated $145 to the church supported
“Brown Bag Brigade” which feeds the homeless and impoverished. The generosity of HOG members never
ceases to amaze me.
I want to thank all the participants that made it a special day. A special thanks goes out to Alan Steiner and Roger
Hicks for leading the ride, Road Chef Randy Taylor for cooking all the meat, and Kerry Skaugset for the blessing
stickers and New Testaments.

Greetings from the road! Ron and I are currently in Phoenix, AZ, and we’ve been in the upper 90’s and triple digit
temperatures which we are definitely not accustomed to.
If you’ve been following Jozef’s blog on the trip to the Florida Keys, you’ve heard about a lot of the adventures … take a
moment and read it, there are photos as well. Ron and I left the group to visit friends in Arizona and while we’re
enjoying our non-riding friends, we know we’re missing some adventures with the rest of the group on their way
home.…

July 8 - 10: Western Regional HOG Rally in Victoria B.C. Ride will start out the afternoon of July 8th and catch the Black Ball
Ferry line out of Port Angeles at 9:30PM. This is a spectacular 90 minute ocean voyage across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria
Harbour (What? That’s the way they spell it!). It’s unfortunate that you won’t be able to see the Strait because it will be dark by the
time we board. However, you will get a spectacular view of the city lights when we arrive. Everyone will be staying the night in a
hotel near the ferry. Friday morning (July 9) we will head to the Rally to register.
There will be plenty available for you to do. You can check out the new Harley-Davidson® Store, Steve Drane Harley-Davidson®.
Dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean at Mile “0” of the Trans Canada Highway; explore the beautiful Island and the renowned Butchart
Gardens; take in the scenic and breathtaking views of the beautiful Malahat Drive; Check out the event schedule at

Friday night, we will be rock’n the “rock” with the incredible talent of “The Paxton Bachman Band.” You remember Tim Bachman,
one of the founding members of “Bachman Turner Overdrive”.
If you are interested in joining me please let Ken Bean know by emailing him at assistantdirector@eshog.com He will put you on a
distribution list and provide you more info regarding the route and Victoria hotels. Please note that you will need to have a valid
Passport or an enhanced driver’s license to do this ride.
August 1: HOG Pignic. The fourth annual multi chapter HOG PIGNIC will be from 11 AM until 4PM. This year's event will be at
Manchester State Park on the west banks of Puget Sound overlooking the Seattle Skyline. We will be in the Torpedo Warehouse
so a bit of history will be in the offing. Hope all of your chapters can plan to join us, we've had very successful events in the past
and are looking forward to another this year. A few new chapters have been invited to the mix and we hope to have a great
turnout. This is a bring your own lunch to the event we will have the BBQ's going so you can cook whatever you'd like. We always
ask the attending chapters bring some items from their dealer so we have some door prizes, the dealers have been most generous
in the past! And, we have a 50/50 where all the money goes back to the group after the park fees are paid. We gave out over
$500.00 last year. There are prizes for various categories with one for a chapter challenge where the chapter with the most
attending wins the award. If you have any questions or concerns you are welcome to contact me. I have a facebook page set up
for the event as well as ads that will be on Thunder Press and the Sound Rider websites. Please put this event on your chapter
calendars and plan a ride to the event, it's well worth attending, we have a great time!

2010 Eastside HOG Activities
August 7 - 8: Olympic Peninsula ride. Come enjoy a scenic two day ride around the Olympic Peninsula with an overnight stay in
Forks. Additional details will be coming soon. Contact Ken Lee or myself if interested so rooms can be arranged.
August 28 - 29: Cascade Loop Ride. Before summer is officially over come ride and catch the beautiful early fall colors on the way
to the Methow Valley ! Spend the night in historic Winthrop within walking distance of many a vendor of adult beverage. The next
day ride back amongst the orchards and vineyards as we loop back toward Puget Sound over one of the passes to the
south. Space is limited, reserve your spot now!
When: Saturday August 28 through Sunday August 29, 2010. Leaving the dealership after the chapter meeting is over, 10:30 AM.
Where to: Methow Valley ( Winthrop ) via North Cascades highway, looping back to the west side of the state on Sunday via either
Blewitt or Stevens Pass.
Lodging: The Duck Brand Hotel & Cantina—downtown Winthrop

My First LOH Experience by Renee Cantarini
Ever think about joining a HOG group? And if you are a lady, joining a LOH group? What is this group about? What
do they do? Well, let me tell you…
I bought my first Harley and wanted to join a local chapter. On-line I looked up the dealership in my area and there
was a link to the LOH group. I attended my first LOH meeting not knowing what to expect, and was a little nervous.
Immediately I and other new ladies were welcomed! It didn’t matter if you rode solo, on the back, or your
circumstances have you not riding at the moment. Everyone was welcomed and encouraged to participate. The
meeting was organized with an agenda, and this group is happening! They discussed 2 pages of different activities
for riding, and just getting together to socialize. You could feel the friendships forming already, the camaraderie,
passion for women riders of all types, and wanting to promote ladies on Harleys. There were lots of laughs, and
then… we got to ride!
There was a road captain and she reviewed the signals, pattern for riding, and route. New riders were given specific
details for riding in a group. Then there was the call, “Everyone gassed up?” Oh my! Being new, and nervous, I
totally forgot. Everyone was gassed up, but me! I notified the road captain and there was no problem. She told me to
signal her when I needed gas along the way. Before I knew it, she remembered and stopped for gas! Lonely me
gassed up; yet no one in the group batted an eyelash or said a word. You could see everyone was genuinely
concerned for each other, safety was a priority, and we shared the love for the open road!! What a great meeting,
and a great day!
LOH… a great place to meet lady riders, develop friendships, share a common passion, and promote ladies to ride!

Last month I was beginning the journey into yet uncharted Harley history with the 1st in a series of “obscure” history
articles, until I realized we hadn’t mastered the basics, like “name the four founding fathers” of Harley Davidson. I was
going to present the “You don’t know Jack” award, but I only had one. My optimism was matched only by the
enthusiasm of incorrect answers.
This month, Karen Pennewell will fill in for the Trivia portion of the Chapter meeting, since I will be enjoying the 5,500
mile trip home from Key West, FL.
Karen is equipped with a new Harley Davidson Special Edition book from which she will pose questions and reward
those few with the appropriate prizes. From my “undercover” sources, i.e., Rich Moothart, I understand Karen will
continue the tradition and show no mercy. She will stump the audience with trivia even well accomplished scholars
cannot answer…You will be happy that I am returning with a fresh, new, forgiving outlook!!
OK, so back to basics we go. This is the 1st in a series of four biographies brought to you by the Motorcycle Hall of
Fame Museum .
Arthur Davidson
One of the four original founders of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Arthur Davidson, along
with William Harley, first began tinkering with the then-new gasoline engines, hoping to take the hard
work out of pedaling a bicycle. Soon, Arthur got his brothers involved in the hobby that ultimately
turned into a major manufacturing enterprise. Arthur was the driving force in setting up the nationwide dealer network for Harley-Davidson in the company's early years. Davidson was successful not
only in establishing Harley-Davidson dealerships across the United States, but also in many
countries around the globe.
Born in 1881, Arthur was the youngest of the three Davidson brothers (Arthur, Walter and William), who along with
William Harley, founded Harley-Davidson in 1903. In 1910, Davidson began signing dealers to sell the brand, which
was not widely known at the time. Davidson was a great storyteller and was admired for his friendly business style.
Arthur was a great friend to Harley-Davidson dealers. The dealership owners would often turn to Davidson for sound
advice. He implemented a Harley-Davidson service school to train qualified mechanics. He recognized the importance
of advertising and used that medium to keep the demand high for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Arthur noted the
trend towards installment buying and helped organize the Kilbourn Finance Corporation in 1923 and acted as the
firm's president.

In addition to helping guide Harley-Davidson through a period of rapid growth, Arthur Davidson also was a great ally to
the American Motorcyclist Association. Davidson recognized the importance of an association of industry members
and riders brought together to further the sport of motorcycling. Davidson was instrumental in recruiting corporate
memberships to the AMA.
Davidson's primary interest outside of motorcycling was raising prize Guernsey cattle at his farm west of Milwaukee.
After World War II, Davidson spent an increasing amount of time on his farm and he became well known for his
philanthropy. He was active in and supported the Boy Scouts by establishing a trust fund and donating land for a
camp. He also donated to a Wisconsin home for the blind. Davidson remained active with Harley-Davidson until his
untimely death in 1950, when he and his wife died in an auto accident in Milwaukee. In a sad twist of fate, Davidson's
son, James, and his wife died in an automobile accident in 1966.

Heavenly Bikers
Gabriel came to the Lord and said, "I
have to talk to you. We have some
Bikers up here who are causing
problems. They're swinging on the
pearly gates, my horn is missing, and
they are wearing T-shirts instead of
robes; there's barbecue sauce and
picante sauce everywhere, especially
all over their T-shirts; their dogs are
riding in the chariots, and chasing the
sheep; they're wearing Dew Rags and
Baseball Caps instead of their halos.
They refuse to keep the stairway to
heaven clean, and their boots are
marking and scratching up the halls of
wisdom. There are sunflower seeds and
hot wing bones all over the place. Some
of them are walking around with just
one wing; they refuse to walk and insist
on bringing their "Hogs" with them." The
Lord said, "Bikers are Bikers, Gabriel.
Heaven is Home to all my children. If
you want to know about real problems,
call the Devil." The Devil answered the
phone, "Hello --- hold on a minute." The
Devil returned to the phone, "O.K., I'm
back. What can I do for you?" Gabriel
replied, "I just want to know what kind of
problems you're having down there."
The Devil said, "Hold on again. I need
to check on something." After about 5
minutes the Devil returned to the phone
and said, "I'm back. Now what was the
question?" Gabriel said, "What kind of
problems are you having down there?"
The Devil said, "Man, I don't believe this
... Hold on." This time the Devil was
gone 15 minutes. The Devil returned
and said, "I'm sorry Gabriel, I can't talk
right now. Those damn Bikers have put
out the fire and are trying to install air
conditioning."
