The 2015 Student Trooper Program
The 2015 Student Trooper Program will be held at the State Police Academy in New Braintree during the
weeks of July 6th through July 10th and July 20th through July 24th. The application is currently available on
the MSP Website (www.mass.gov/msp). Applications will be accepted beginning on April 1, 2015. There will be
a limited amount of spaces set aside each week for MSP immediate family members between the ages of 15-17.
It is recommended that those MSP members interested in securing a space contact Sergeant Karen Frustaci at the
SPA via email at Karen.frustaci@massmail.state.ma.us ASAP. Sergeant Frustaci will respond to you via email
regarding the process of forwarding the required Student Trooper Application paperwork. An April 29, 2015,
deadline has been established for receipt of the application and payment for the MSP spaces.

OBITUARIES
EDWARD J. MONTAGUE, JR
Edward J. Montague, Jr., age 65, of Methuen MA, formerly of Framingham, MA,
died according to his wishes, at his home surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday,
March 28, 2015. He was born in Brighton and was the son of Elizabeth (Brady)
Montague of Framingham, MA and the late Edward J Montague, Sr.
He was a graduate of Framingham North High School and received his BS degree in
Law Enforcement from Western New England College. After serving in the US Navy as
a Torpedoman TM3 aboard the USS Nautilus SSN571 from 1968-1972, he entered the
police academy and was a proud and dedicated police officer for 31 years. He served on
the Framingham Police force from 1972-1973; the Registry of Motor Vehicles Police from 1974-1992; and the
Massachusetts State Police from 1992-2003. He retired as a Lieutenant in 2003 from the Massachusetts State
Police, Troop A -HQ. In his retirement, he was dedicated to his work co-founding the Massachusetts State Police
Museum and Learning Center in Grafton, MA, where he remains the Director Emeritus. Ed was a quiet and
loving man. He said, “I loved being a cop”. He also loved collecting and trading police badges and patches, he
loved taking cruises and vacationing with his wife, and he loved playing with his grandchildren.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 18 years Maxine M (Comeau) Montague of Methuen, MA, his children
Jennifer Reinholt and her husband, Hans of Lenox, MA, Scott Montague of Lenox, MA, Michele Berbaum and
her husband Brian of Methuen, MA, Ronald Ferguson Jr. and his wife Lisa (Paterna) of Peabody, MA, Renee
Turczyn of Tewksbury, MA, Christine Raine and her husband Bill of Littleton, MA, son-in-law Michael
Coughlin of Methuen, MA, his brothers Thomas Montague and his wife, Leslie of Lancaster, MA, and Robert
Montague of Middleton, MA, his grandchildren Scot Chiavelli, Jenna Chiavelli, Brendan Ferguson, Hannah
Raine, Ryan Coughlin, Evan Turczyn, Aidan Ferguson, Ava Reinholt, and Jon Reinholt, and also nieces and
nephews.
His family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the dedicated care givers, especially to the skilled,
compassionate and caring Dr. James Cleary at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute who made Ed’s long difficult
sickness much easier to navigate.
His friends and relatives were respectfully invited to visiting hours on Tuesday, March 31st from 4 to 8pm
at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. His Mass of Christian Burial took place on
Wednesday, April 1st at 11:00 am at St. Monica’s Church, 214 Lawrence St., Methuen. Services for interment
of ashes will be private.
Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to a collective fund to support the Dana Farber Cancer
Institute that will honor his dedicated oncologist, Dr. James Cleary, by donating in Ed’s name directly at any TD
Bank, or mailed to TD Bank, 91 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen, MA 01844. Memorial donations in Ed’s name
may also be made to the museum he loved so much, the Massachusetts State Police Museum and Learning
Center, 470 Worcester Road, Framingham, MA 01701.

ROBERT E. DAHILL 39TH RTT 1956
Robert E. Dahill 82, a long time resident of Maynard, formerly of Arlington April 12, 2015 at Tufts Medical
Center in Boston. Veteran US Navy, Staff Sgt. Mass. State Police (Retired) 39th RTT 56.
Beloved husband of Marie (Lepere) Dahill. Loving father of Diane Dahill and Steven Dahill and his wife
Lisa, all of Maynard. Devoted grandfather of Clayton and Samantha. He also leaves two brothers, Thomas Dahill
and his wife Eileen and Charles Dahill. Predeceased by two sisters, Helen Farinacci and Margaret Houlihan.
Visiting was Wed. April 15 from 8:30-9:30am in the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave. (Rt. 111),

Alfred 'Alky' J. Welcome Jr. 40th RTT, '56
DUNSTABLE -- Alfred "Alky" J. Welcome Jr., 84, of Dunstable, MA died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at
Lowell General Hospital, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Lowell, MA, he was the son of the late Alfred J. and Veronica Welcome. He attended Keith Hall and
graduated from Essex County Agricultural.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Alfred worked as a Massachusetts State Trooper as a Field Officer, Troop C out of the Southbridge and
Leominster Barracks from 1956-1980.
He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in N. Chelmsford.
His family would like to thank Dr. Ardman and staff at Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center.
He is survived by his companion, Patricia Salvatore of Hyde Park, MA; two nieces, Kathleen Welcome of
Groveton, NH, and Maryann Burton of Pompano Beach, FL; and many cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Welcome.
Private graveside services were Monday, November 24, 2014 at St. Patrick Cemetery Lowell, MA.

J. PETER GRUDZIEN, AGE 95
Sturbridge: J. Peter Grudzien, 95, of Shepard Rd., passed away peacefully surrounded
by his family on Sunday, March 29th, in his home after a brief illness.
His wife, Rita G. (Dupre) Grudzien, died in 2004. He leaves his sister, Kelly Grudzien
of Quinebaug, CT; his nephew, John Scaramella of Evergreen, CO; his niece, Patricia
Talanian of Chicago, Ill.; and his great niece, Gerri Davenport and her husband Alan. He
was predeceased by his aunt and adopted mother, Catherine Ciesla. He was also
predeceased by his brother, Walter Grudzien and his sister, Florence Grudzien. He was born
in Southbridge the son of John and Sophie (Skrzec) Grudzien. Peter was a proud U.S. Army
Air Corps Veteran of World War II.
Peter was a mechanic and owned and operated Grudzien's Auto Service for over 40 years. After retiring from
his own garage he worked for an additional 10 years as a mechanic for the State Police in Sturbridge. He was a
member of the American Legion in Sturbridge, a member of the National Riffle Association and was a staunch
Republican. He enjoyed snowmobiling and owned several snowmobiles. Peter was very mechanically inclined
and could build, make or fabricate anything he put his mind to.
His funeral was held on Wednesday, April 1st, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St.,
Southbridge, with a Mass at 10:00am in St. Anne's Church, 16 Church St., Sturbridge. Burial will be private.
Calling hours in the funeral home were held on Tuesday, March 31st, from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
