PRESENTED BY O C TO B E R 1 - 2 HYATT REGENCY LAKE TAHOE, INCLINE VILLAGE 2005 PRESS GUIDE TV The award-winning TEAM Unlimited television crew will be in Nevada to tape all the race action for a nationally broadcast one-hour sports special. Check your local listings for air times or visit xterraplanet.com SWIM 1.5K MTB 32K RUN 10K The Nissan Xterra USA Championship is title sponsored by Nissan Xterra, and presented by the Nevada Commission on Tourism, Paul Mitchell and XTERRA Gear. Sponsors include XTERRA Wetsuits, Gatorade, Expedia, and Zorrel. XTERRA’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Since April, thousands of amateur athletes have taken part in the challenge of the Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series. Through the trials of these 50 races, spanning 28 states from coast-to-coast and reaching as far as Alaska and Hawaii, a determined few have qualified to race for the ultimate prize. On Oct. 2 here in Nevada, the best-of-thebest XTERRA racers from age 15-to-70 will challenge each other, and Mother Nature, for the prestigious national championship crown and for the pros, there’s $110,000 at stake. Now in its fifth year at Incline Village, the event will be filmed and edited into a one-hour special that will be seen by millions of viewers across the country via national syndication starting in November. In addition to the XTERRA racing, there are plenty of things to see and do for runners and spectators, and tons of great stuff for the kids too. THE XTERRA VILLAGE The gathering place and headquarters for all the outdoor action is the Village Green next to the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe. There you'll find big white tents filled with everything from the latest in XTERRA Gear to the new Nissan Xterra SUV. It's where athletes register and kids play games. There's music playing, prize giveaways, and great BBQ to enjoy. There’s even the NEVADA Climbing Wall for the kids, or the kid in you! The Expo is open from 9am-to-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Founded to help physically challenged athletes reach their athletic goals, the non-profit Challenged Athletes Foundation is the official charity of the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon at each stop on Nissan Xterra Champioinship Series. Stylists will cut hair from 10am-2pm on Sunday in exchange for a donation to CAF. CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION 5 OFF-R ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA UNIVERSITY Presented by Paul Mitchell Learn the art of XTERRA from the best off-road multisport athletes on the planet. XTERRA U is a must for first-timers and anyone looking to sharpen their skills in swimming, mountain biking, trail running, and nutrition. The pros will even break down into Tahoe course specifics and answer any and all questions. Best part is, these hands-on clinics are FREE. Clinics are Friday, Sept. 30: Attend all the lessons or pick your discipline (see schedule for start times); - Mountain Biking with Melanie McQuaid and Mike Vine - Swimming with Jess Harrison and Brent McMahon - The Art of XTERRA (Transition, Nutrition, Training, and Course Tips) with expert panel of Conrad Stoltz, Jamie Whitmore, Justin Thomas, and Melissa Thomas NISSAN XTERRA SUV SHOW Proud Nissan Xterra Owners get the chance to show off their SUV in the middle of the compound area on Saturday. Judges will recognize and give trophies to “Best Stock”, “Best Custom”, and “Xterra Lifestyle”. It's good to be a kid at the XTERRA Village. At the Nissan Kids Base Camp there are running and bike races just for the youngsters. Experts even teach the basics of bike mechanics and bike safety. There are obstacle courses and agility drills, and every kid wins prizes and awards. It's all free, and all fun! The kid's running sprint race starts right after the cannon blast sends the big Scramblers on their way into the forest. It's a short course that takes place right in the XTERRA Village area. The real showdown is the Shimano Youth Series bike race at 10am on Sunday which is designed to provide youngsters with the opportunity to participate like their parents in a positive and fun environment. Each race matches bikers of the same age - or about the same size in the same race, so the pre-teen future BMX pro won't be buzzing past any 3-year-olds on training wheels! 6 OFF-R ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA NEVADA SCRAMBLE 5K / 10K A benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina Not your everyday 5k/10k! Forget boring old road runs that conquer miles and miles of concrete and asphalt, the XTERRA Nevada Scramble trail run is a "mud in your eye, don't twist your ankle on that rock" kind of run. These are, in fact, the same paths that Sunday's XTERRA competitors will tackle on their way to the finish line. Get to know Incline Village in a whole new way - all while breathing in some fresh air and exercising your way to the start of a great day. XTERRA NEVADA While only a select few will qualify for the championship race on Sunday, one-and-all are eligible to compete in the XTERRA Nevada open competition on Saturday. The race is comprised of three disciplines: a 750-meter swim, 32-kilometer mountain bike, and 5k trail run. While the swim and bike segments are half-the-distance of the championship course, the mountain bike leg is identical to that of the main event. Participants can even create a two or three person group - where one person does the swim, another the bike, and the other the run - and enter the XTERRA Nevada relay team competition. This is a great way to have fun with family and friends even if all three disciplines aren't your thing. 7 USA CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE DESCRIPTION Nevada's spectacular natural environment and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range provide a worldclass setting and challenge for the biggest race of the season. The national championship starts at the beach fronting the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe where competitors swim two laps of a 750-meter course in the spring-fed, crystal clear waters located 6,200 feet above sea level. The swim is followed by a short run to the grassy transition area at Village Green. The second element is a 32-kilometer, single loop mountain bike course. Following a short, paved section past prime, lake front real estate on Incline Village's Lakeshore Blvd., competitors reach the trails at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, where the race really begins. The first off-road section greeting riders is a 1,600-foot climb up Tunnel Creek Road to Tahoe's famed Flume Trail. The "Flume" is known for its exposed crossing of sheer rock faces and incredible sweeping vistas. Those focusing too much on the view may end up casualties of this 4.4mile section of single track. "It's my favorite ride in the whole world!" exclaims XTERRA Pro Jenny Tobin. At the aspen-clad Marlette Lake, a second leg-burning climb on Hobart Road takes racers to the Tahoe Rim Trail. Halfway into the 6.6-mile section is the Marlette Lake Overlook at 8,700 feet above sea level (the highest point on the XTERRA course). From the top, a 2,500-foot descent to the second transition area resembles "Toad's Wild Ride" as it passes through a series of switchbacks and the waterless Twin Lakes. The last leg of the race is a 10-kilometer forest trail run consisting of two 5-kilometer laps through some of nature's most arduous obstacles, including a dozen creek crossings. While the run course remains relatively flat, there are numerous short, steep climbs and quick descents. Splashing through glacial creeks, balancing along narrow log crossings, and skipping over boulders are just a few of the final tests of skill and endurance. The run course also passes by the crowd at the compound, who can hoot, holler, monitor, and react to the action. The XTERRA Nevada course on Saturday is identical to that of the main event, except the swim and run segments are half-the-distance. 8 USA CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE MAPS BIKE COURSE 9 PRO START LIST # - Men - Age, Hometown 1 - Conrad Stoltz - 31, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2 - Brent McMahon - 24, Victoria, B.C., Canada 3 - Olivier Marceau - 32, Cannes, France 4 - Mike Vine - 32, Victoria, B.C., Canada 5 - Francisco Serrano - 25, Garza Garcia, Mexico 6 - Josiah Middaugh - 27, Vail, Colorado 7 - Justin Thomas - 30, Reno, Nevada 8 - Jason Chalker - 31, Canberra, Australia 9 - Greg Krause - 27, Denver, Colorado 10 - Andrew Noble - 40, Gold Coast, Australia 11 - John Koenig - 35, Boulder, Colorado 12 - Jimmy Archer - 33, Boulder, Colorado 14 - Kelly Guest - 28, Vancouver, B.C., Canada 15 - Michael Simpson - 22, Vancouver, B.C., Canada 16 - Seth Wealing - 26, Boulder, Colorado 17 - Ryan Ignatz - 26, Boulder, Colorado 18 - Will Kelsay - 24, Boulder, Colorado 19 - Jim Vance - 28, San Diego, California 20 - David Thompson - St. Paul, Minnesota 21 - Sylvain Dodet - 31, Antibes, France 22 - Stefan Jakobsen - 31, Nanaimo, B.C., Canada 23 - Deon Lourens - 37, Encinitas, California 24 - Eric Lujan - 22, Albuquerque, New Mexico 25 - Dennis Manor - 29, Reno, Nevada 26 - Thaddeus Reichley - 30, Santa Monica, CA 27 - Chad Seymour - 23, Honolulu, Hawaii 28 - Chris Legh - 32, Melbourne, Australia 29 - Chad Demasi - Davis, California 30 - Eneko Llanos - 28, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain The professionals competing in this race are among the best mountain bikers and triathletes on the planet. There are five Olympians in the group, and a host of worldclass mountain bikers, swimmers, and runners. The title is up for grabs... MEN’S RACE Conrad Stoltz has to be the men’s favorite. He won this race three years in a row from 2001 thru 2003 before struggling though a mediocre season in 2004. In ‘05, he’s been on fire and was unstoppable until Mike Vine crushed him and the high-altitude course in Keystone, Colorado on Aug. 14. If Vine can do that again, nobody can beat him, but Stoltz is on a self-declared mission to dominate this sport like he has in the past and it’s hard to doubt him. Next up is Eneko Llanos, last year’s winner and the current and two-time XTERRA World Champ. He was hurt earlier this year, however, and finished second to Olivier Marceau at XTERRA Spain and second to Nicolas LeBrun at XTERRA Germany last month. Other strong contenders include Olympians Olivier Marceau - the two-time XTERRA European Tour Champion, and rookie Brent McMahon, who’s always first out of the water. Mexico’s Francisco Serrano showed he’s capable in Milwaukee, finishing just 47 seconds behind Stoltz. Josiah Middaugh is America’s best hope, and he had the fastest bike and run here last year, although his swim put him more than four minutes behind the leaders. Sylvain Dodet had a great season last year to win the Pro Series and was second here, but he hasn’t raced in an XTERRA in 2005. Justin Thomas and Jason Chalker both live and train in Reno during the season so they’re likely as familiar with this course as anybody racing. Canada’s Michael Simpson just beat some big name triathletes to win the City of Los Angeles Triathlon held September 11th. Seth Wealing was fourth in Richmond, fast, and has mountain bike skills. Greg Krause is another U.S. guy that lives at altitude and has had a pair of podium finishes this year. WOMEN RACE In the women's race it's simple and once again, all about Jamie and Melanie. They've been 1-2 in 14 of the last 15 races (Whitmore leads during this stretch 8-6, with three straight wins in Tahoe but McQuaid won the last race in Keystone). They enter this race dead even in points as both have won two championship events this year, and the winner will walk away with $19,000 in prizes ($14k for the Series and $5k for first). The heat is on! Candy Angle finished third here last year, and is third in points, and she’s won a big one before (the 2002 XTERRA World Championship). First-year standout Jess Harrison has three top five finishes under her belt and comes out of the water with a lead. Perhaps the first person out of the water this year will be a woman, America’s finest Barb Lindquist. It’s her first-ever XTERRA and possibly her last triathlon on U.S. soil as she announced plans of retirement. Melissa Thomas quietly stays in contention every race with fantastic times on the bike. Jenny Tobin is never too far back and a great runner. Canadian Danelle Kabush finished 3rd in Maui last year, but has yet to have a great race this season. Janae Pritchett is comfortable at altitude and in the snow (which it might) as a professional alpine skier. Monique Merrill was third in Keystone, and she won the Pro Series back in 2001. The real darkhorse might be four-time NORBA Champ and two-time Olympian Jimena Florit, who had the best bike in Keystone and is getting better at the swim and run. 11 MIDDAUGH McMAHON ANGLE McQUAID 2005 XTERRA PRO SERIES The 2005 Nissan Xterra National Championship Series consists of five events: May 15 – Nissan Xterra West Championship (Temecula, CA) July 3 – Nissan Xterra East Championship (Richmond, VA) July 24 – Nissan Xterra Midwest Championship (Milwaukee, WI) Aug. 14 – Nissan Xterra Mountain Championship (Keystone, CO) Oct. 2 – Nissan Xterra USA Championship (Lake Tahoe, NV) The top 15 pros at each event are awarded points based on overall pro finish. Pros can drop one of their scores from the first four events, but must count the points they get (or don’t get) here in Nevada. Thus, the final point total combines athletes best three scores in the first four races, plus the USA Championship race points. He/she with most points in the end is the Series Champ. The U.S. Series will dish out $190,000 in prize money. $20,000 at Temecula, Richmond, Milwaukee, and Keystone, $40,000 at stake in Nevada, plus $70,000 will be distributed to the top points scorers in the Series. See pro purse breakdown information on p. 23. Note: The Nissan Xterra World Championship Oct. 23 in Makena, Maui is a stand-alone event worth a $130,000. 2005 Pro Points Score Breakdown: 1 100 2 90 3 82 4 75 5 69 6 63 7 58 8 53 9 49 10 45 11 41 12 37 13 34 14 31 15 28 XTERRA U.S. PRO SERIES STANDINGS (After four of five events) MEN Total West East Midwest Mountain USA Pl Name Pts Temecula Richmond Milwaukee Keystone Tahoe 1 Conrad Stoltz 300 100 100 100 90 2 Brent McMahon 249 90 90 69 x 3 Olivier Marceau 246 82 82 82 x 4 Mike Vine 228 75 53 41 100 5 Francisco Serrano 206 63 x 90 53 6 Josiah Middaugh 203 58 45 63 82 7t Justin Thomas 191 41 63 53 75 7t Jason Chalker 191 49 58 75 58 9 Greg Krause 172 69 x 34 69 10 Andrew Noble 164 37 69 58 x Also with points: John Koenig (124), Jimmy Archer (116), Kelly Guest (94), Michael Simpson (91), Seth Wealing (75), Ryan Ignatz (65), Will Kelsay (65), Jim Vance (59), Kerry Classen (53), David Thompson (49), Brian Smith (45), Michael Tobin (41), Bucky Shafer (37), Roan Exelby (31), Brian Astell (28). At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on October 2. This year there are more than 50 races heading into 31 states across the country, as well as Puerto Rico and Saipan. It marks the ninth straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA. Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race: NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories. 2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on January 1, 2005. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+(m), 3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50+ events - including Nissan Xterra Points Series (NXPS) races and Nissan Xterra Championship Series (NXCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes. 4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one Nissan Xterra Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the Nissan Xterra Points Series races. There are two points systems: Nissan Xterra Championship Series: 1st 100 2nd 90 3rd 82 4th 75 5th 69 6th 7th 8th 63 58 53 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 Nissan Xterra Points Series: 1st 75 2nd 67 3rd 61 4th 56 5th 51 6th 7th 8th 47 43 39 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 36 33 30 27 25 23 21 5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the Nissan Xterra USA Championship in Nevada. The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and is invited to nationals - along with the other top finishers. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the World Championship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan, South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, New Zealand, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trail run. Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day. Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage to repeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the most intimidating in the series. The sold-out field is limited to 500 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely on the basis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers a unique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less than stellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the coveted title of XTERRA World Champion. Last year Eneko Llanos of Spain captured the men’s championship for the second straight year and Jamie Whitmore from California won her first women’s world championship. A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man and woman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA World Championship time. Only eight days and a narrow channel of ocean separate the two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2004, Canadians Peter Reid won the men’s double and Heather Fuhr won the women’s double. CBS will be there to televise all the action for a one-hour "CBS Sports Spectacular" which will air on Super Bowl Sunday at 12 noon. 32 XTERRA BEGINNINGS IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV. "First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second, what looks good on TV? - The beaches and the ocean," explained Kiely. The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world. Bring those two together in programming, and you've got something big. So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports. In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN, and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna" Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director." "So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show, it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third." ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991 TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating. "So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian Sports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, different stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good fun stuff," said Kiely. Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean Challenge and a few others televised events, including the inaugural Tour O' Hawaii. "Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from every country kept their amateur status so they could race in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich, Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the field was a who's who of international cycling." A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete, road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O' Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the Hawaiian Mountain Tour. In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend, Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser, Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump in the water. It sparked a thought…why not have a mountain bike triathlon? By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50 shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it? Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was looking for a new event that could tell a different story about Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21 miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV for the whole world to see? Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth. Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office. "Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely. 33 "And that's what got us started in XTERRA." THE WORLD OF XTERRA At the finish line of the very first race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructured the company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today… - The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 90+ in 14 countries in a nineyear span - including a 53-stop U.S. series for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. - We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We even offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros. - We offer close to a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media. - We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 168 amateur regional champions and 20 amateur national champions. Then we invite the best amateurs and pros from around the world to race for world titles. - We get kids involved wherever we go with the Nissan Kids Base Camp. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, clinics on how to be safe, climbing walls, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active. - We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. - We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so we selected Expedia's WWTE Technology to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We also recently finished re-creating XTERRAPlanet.com, which is soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure. - With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation this year - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to give kids a chance. - We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Scramble Series. These 5k and 10k fun runs go to cities in America we haven't been able to reach yet with XTERRA - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle. - The movement is growing rapidly, and has extended to events like the Nevada Passage (a six-day adventure competition in Nevada created for the everyday warrior) and the XTERRA Iceman Cometh (our first venture in to the world of winter events). LIVE MORE 34 XTERRA FOUNDATION We can help children get off to a better start. WHAT WE BELIEVE IN In an interview for the 2004 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong said that he was pretty sure that the race was going to go to 'the guy who was best-prepared to win'. We think that's true of every aspect of life and the XTERRA Foundation was started to help give kids who might not be 'the best prepared' a chance at fulfilling their dreams. We're athletes, not educators, but we do understand the concept of 'prepared to win'. Poverty is a challenge. Broken homes are a challenge. Poor diet is a challenge...but a lack of hope is the biggest challenge of all. At XTERRA Foundation, we believe that we need to start by teaching kids that winning is possible. We believe that the best way to begin is to boost an individual child's belief in his or her own abilities. We work to teach children that they can learn, graduate from high school and succeed in college. We build a sense of pride by supporting their athletic achievement and academic advancement. HOW YOU CAN HELP The XTERRA Foundation is growing. We need lots of help in order to help a lot of kids. This year, we have launched a series of 21 events in cities across North America. Most of these are XTERRA Scrambles, off-road fun runs, to benefit local community not-for-profits who share our educational goals. You can help by committing your time or your cash to efforts in your community. 1. Individuals can help us start an XTERRA Foundation group in communities to mentor and support the youth. 2. Entrepreneurs can help us start up the XTERRA Scramble Series. 3. If you are a company, let's see how we can combine our resources to best serve the youth. 4. If you are a non-profit or part of a community organization, talk to us and we'll see how we and our partners can help give your kids a better chance.
