had surgery on his knee and

full-time employee. He was
recently inducted into the PBA
Hall of Fame. Jason always
has high expectations and will
be on the verge of grabbing
this elusive title. This will be a
tough one for him but, TOUGH
is his middle name.
Patrick Allen – PA, as he
is known, has had very good
success in this event even
though never winning. His
best finish is second. PA, lost
his mojo over the last several
years and has fought to get
his form back. He is not sure
what really got him there but

In government-involvementin-bowling news, my Chicago
area friends are looking at
higher taxes to help close a
budgetary shortfall. Cook
County, Illinois is proposing
a 3% increase in amusement
taxes, already at 9%, to bring
the total to 12%. County
amusement taxes include cable
television, golf and, wait for it,
bowling. This past July, county
board members voted to raise
sales taxes by 1%. Combined
with other local and city taxes,
the Cook County sales tax is
now at 10.25%, highest in the
country.

Another MLB post-season
has started and for the 36th
straight year, there will not
be a parade going through
Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle
along Forbes Avenue (at least
not in November). Didn’t think
for the second straight year, the
Pirates would run into a pitcher
in a Sandy Koufaxesque zone.
But at least we made it. Yeah,
right.
The Giants’ Madison
Bumgarner last year and now
the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta allowed
all of four hits over eighteen
innings in the last two NL Wild
Card Games. So much for home
field advantage, huh? Winning
a division would help bypass
the wild card game, but getting
several players hot at the right
time of October certainly goes
a long, long way.

Speaking of the team
headquartered at the corner of
Clark and Addison in Chicago’s Lakeview/Wrigleyville
neighborhood, it is time for a
little more background on bad
animal karma.
Having lived there for
twenty years, I’ve certainly
heard more from fans and
media about other subliminal
and parallel curses, but here
are the main two.
The Curse of the Billy Goat
actually started as a good luck
charm in 1945. Billy Goat Tavern owner Sam Sianis brought
his live billy goat to Wrigley
for the numerous games that
season, helping get his team
their tenth National League
pennant in forty years (and no
World Series titles among those
ten pennants).
But for the World Series, the
billy goat was not welcomed
at Wrigley Field. Sianis supposedly said because, he and
his goat were insulted, the
Cubs would never win another
pennant.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Bowlmor AMF, the largest operator
of bowling centers in the
world, in collaboration with the
United States Bowling Congress
and the Bowling Proprietors’
Association of America, will
provide a new level of lane
integrity for bowlers at the
2015 Bowlmor AMF U.S. Open.
Bowlmor AMF worked with
USBC and Lane Analytics to
complete a comprehensive
topography evaluation of the
lanes at host center AMF
Garland Lanes, ahead of the
event that will take place Nov.
2-8 in Garland, Texas.
Each board of every lane
was inspected and leveled
every three feet in 18 locations per lane. As a result,
99 percent of the crowns and
depressions plus cross-tilts are
within twenty-thousandths of
an inch of flat. This dramatically exceeds USBC’s minimum
standard of forty-thousandths
of an inch using three inspection locations per lane.
“Bowlmor AMF is committed to competitive bowling
and playing a leading role in
moving the sport forward in a
positive way,” Bowlmor AMF
Vice President of Leagues Jay
Lietman said. “We are proud
to create a world-class venue
for the U.S. Open and strive to
provide an exceptional experience for our league bowlers
across the country as well.”
Details of the U.S. Open
lane pattern also are designed
to achieve a higher level of
competition integrity. The lane
pattern will not be revealed until immediately before official
practice at AMF Garland Lanes.
Additionally, there will be no
re-oiling of the lanes between
squads.
“From an integrity perspective, Bowlmor AMF has
provided a venue of the same
high quality you find with a
custom installation such as the
USBC Open Championships,”
USBC Executive Director
Chad Murphy said. “With no
information being provided
about the pattern in advance of
the event and also no re-oiling
procedure during the event,
we have taken a step further
to leveling the playing field.
Multiple angles will need to be
played throughout the event to
be successful. It’s exciting to
think about and I’m looking
forward to it.”
USBC plans to use the
partnership model developed
with Bowlmor AMF to improve
lane topography for future
host centers of championship
events. Limiting the release
of lane pattern information
already is standard practice
for the Professional Women’s
Bowling Association Tour,
Intercollegiate Team and
Singles Championships and
most recently, the 2016 Junior
Gold Championships.
While many equate a golf
scorecard to bowling’s pattern
information, Murphy explained
a golf scorecard doesn’t change,
since yardages are always the
same, but bowling patterns

Team USA squad for the 2015
World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women’s Championships has been selected and
Danielle McEwan of Stony
Point, New York, will make
her debut in the event that will
take place Dec. 5-14 in Abu
Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Bowling fans will be able to
watch the action live from the
Khalifa International Bowling Centre on BOWL.com’s
BowlTV.
While McEwan will make
her first appearance in a World
Women’s Championships, five
of the six Team USA members
selected by the Team USA
coaching staff were on the
squad for the 2013 event.
Returning to represent the
United States will be Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York;
Stefanie Johnson of Grand
Prairie, Texas; Kelly Kulick of
Union, New Jersey; Shannon
O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois,
and Shannon Pluhowsky of
Kettering, Ohio.
McEwan is no stranger to
competing on the world stage,
having represented the U.S. in
the 2012 and 2013 QubicaAMF
World Cup. She also was a
member of the Junior Team
USA squad that won team gold

will take over the lanes at USA
Bowl from Oct. 26 – Nov. 6
during the 2015 Area 10 Bowling Competition. Games will
run from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
on each of the weekdays and
from 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 31. Competition
will not run on Wednesday,
Oct. 28 and Sunday, Nov. 1.
Volunteers are heavily needed
to assist with various shifts.
Athletes and Unified Partners
from the surrounding school
districts and community-based
delegations will be competing
in various divisions, including:
assisted ramp, singles and
Unified doubles. Approximately
240 athletes will bowl on each
of the weekdays and at least
800 will compete on Saturday,
Oct. 31.

one of the smartest bowlers
when it comes to equipment.
He will have to use every brain
cell to win this event. Be on
the look out for PA. He will let
you know for sure if he is in
the hunt.
Mike Scroggins – The one
thing about the U.S. Open is
that is has never faired too well
for the lefties. In 2009, Scroggs
had other ideas. He won this
event shutting the mouths
of all the haters. Scroggs is
a silent killer. He doesn’t
yell, scream or holler. He
does his thing and beats you.
However, Scroggs is battling
a foot injury. He said it feels
great but still has some trouble
maintaining balance at the
line. Either way, he is still a
good bet.
Ryan Ciminelli – Cim is the
new power player on the left
side. Couch move over. Cim
has used his Popeye strength to
dominate. His weakness is his
mental game. When the going
gets tough, Cim goes into hiding. This could be a challenge
for him. As the toughest event,
he will need to search his inner
power and bring it out.
Anthony Pepe – Anthony is
one of our newest champions
on Tour. When it comes to
practice makes perfect, this
is who you look at. Anthony
strives on perfection. His only
hold back is his lack of knowledge about equipment. He
tends to rely too much on his
ball reps. Once he overcomes
that, he will be the most lethal
bowler out there. For now,
just watch this kid bowl. His
approach, form and release are
the smoothest around. He is
so effortless it amazes even the
best players.
Scott Norton – Scott is arguably the best lefty on Tour right
now. He has won 3 titles in
the last 3 years. That is more
than any other lefty in the last
5. He is very consistent and
has raw determination to win.
He is a very educated man and
uses his smarts to win. He
could be the best lefty chance
to win.

4 to tie the series. Then a Bill
Buckneresque error by first
baseman Leon Durham, supposedly caused by his wet first
baseman’s mitt from a water
spill, let the winning runs
score in Game 5. The curse
continues.
The 1989 Cubbies fall in
the NLCS to the Giants in five
games (so it’s not just you,
Rangers fans).
Things were pretty normal
in the 2003 NLCS until the
result of Florida Marlin Luis
Castillo’s eighth inning foul
ball just past the Cubs bullpen
mound literally sucked the air

PBA’S 2014-15 ESPN RATINGS UP 23%, INCLUDE KEY
DEMOGRAPHIC GAINS
PBA television ratings on
ESPN for 2014-15 not only
showed a 23 percent increase
in viewership, but made
important gains in valuable
demographics, PBA CEO and
Commissioner Tom Clark said.
Newly-released ratings data
comparing the overall 2014-15
PBA telecasts on ESPN to the
2013-14 season showed ratings
gains in desirable areas such
as males age 18-49, which was
up 55 percent. The combined
male-female audience in
both the 18-34 and 18-49 age
groups were up 50 percent
year-over-year.
“It’s an exciting time for
the PBA,” Clark said. “These
numbers are rarely achieved in
sports TV and are very encour-
aging. They are both valuable
and attractive to sponsors and
partners. The PBA’s mix of
exciting players including Hall
of Famers, international stars
and former collegiate players
making their mark in increasingly diverse and prestigious
events, plus the continued
support of ESPN have the PBA
positioned for further growth.”
The new PBA on ESPN
schedule begins Dec. 17, with
a special Thursday, 7 p.m. ET
(4 p.m. PT) live telecast of the

Rolltech PBA World Championship Thursday, Dec. 17, the
pinnacle event of the GEICO
PBA World Series of Bowling
VII presented by Silver Legacy
and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority at
the National Bowling Stadium.
The season’s final major will
mark the first live prime-time
telecast of a PBA Tour event in
14 years when the stepladder
finals get underway at 7 p.m.
ET (4 p.m. local time). For the
World Championship, ESPN
telecast tickets are $10 and
$20. All tickets, which can be

admission.
From Dec. 7-19, Reno’s
National Bowling Stadium will
be the center of the bowling
universe as ESPN, pba’s online
bowling channel Xtra Frame
and the best players in the
world converge for a series of
the most unique and lucrative
events in the sport.
WSOB VII will again
showcase the world’s greatest
players including the top stars
from the PBA Tour who will
compete for PBA titles across
five diverse PBA lane oil
patterns, highlighted by the
main event, which is the World
Championship.
The focal point of the
World Championship will be
the player’s ultimate test of
versatility and endurance. The
five players who qualify for
the live stepladder finals on
ESPN on Dec. 17 will survive a
total of 66 games of qualifying
and round-robin match play
bowled on the PBA’s Cheetah,
Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion
and World Championship lane
conditions.
The international representation for the World Series has
already tied a record for entries
from 21 countries, including
Argentina, Australia, Bermuda,
British Virgin Islands, Canada,
Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador,
England, Finland, Germany,
Japan, Mexico, South Korea,
Spain, Thailand, Sweden,
United Arab Emirates and Venezuela in addition to the United
States. Anticipated entries from
China will break the record.
In addition to the World
Championship, tickets are also

Series events, the Cheetah,
