tips
You don’t have to work with one of Idaho’s
top equine professionals to be privy to their
words of wisdom. Here’s a collection of
some advice courtesy of the state’s best and
brightest, from nationally-renowned
trainers to a farrier weighing in on an
age-old debate.

...a good teacher who will guide
them to the right horse...
GREG SMITH: CUTTING
With earnings in excess of $100,000,000
and a spot in the National Cutting
Horse Association Hall of Fame, Greg Smith is inarguably
one of the finest cutting horse trainers in the country. He
trains out of 3K Ranch in Star, and has some great advice
for newcomers and competitors, alike. For beginners, Greg
believes that finding the right instructor is critical. “They
need to find a good teacher who will guide them to the right
horse so they don’t get discouraged early on” he says.
For cutters already in competition, Greg stresses the importance of balance. “Make sure you’re in position when you
start. A lot of people will let the cow get on one side of the
horse or the other, and they get crooked and never can get
balanced out. So be sure to get evened up on that cow and
not get long in one rein and short in the other.”

JEREMY MEADOR:
REINED COW
With a 2011 NRCHA World Champion Reserve Open Hackamore title and multiple year-end
awards in the Intermountain Reined Cow Horse Association under his belt, Jeremy Meador has made quite a name
for himself as a go-to trainer in Idaho and beyond. So what
advice does he have for those aspiring to compete in reined
cow events? “One of the things I see is just the quality of
“
tips
horse,” he says. “Any horse has to be suited to whatever
event that you’ve chosen. He’s going be happier, he’s going
to last longer, and he’s going to be easier to train in the long
run.” Jeremy also touches on the difficulties non-pros face
when it comes to practicing with cattle. “For non-pros, if
you don’t have easy access to cattle, it can be a tough event.
I’d say that’s probably the biggest problem they face.”
Any horse has to be suited to
whatever event that you’ve chosen.

...you cannot look at things
in black and white.
ERIC LOY: FARRIER
While many horse owners are flexible
when it comes to opting for or against
shoes depending on their circumstances,
there are definitely strong opinions on both sides of the
fence. So in an effort to shed some light on this hotly-contested issue, we consulted with an expert: farrier Eric Loy of
Emmett. “To say that every horse can be barefoot or every
horse needs shoes, I just think that’s narrow-minded,” he
says. “You just have to evaluate every horse to see what will
work. When you’re involved with horses, you cannot look at
things in black and white because every situation is a little
bit different.”
There you have it, straight from the experts’ mouths. Hopefully these nuggets of wisdom will provide some assistance
as you carve out your own path in the equine world. .

QUALITY TRAILER SALES STRIVES FOR THE BEST IN THEIR
PRODUCTS AND SERVICE
Q
Quality Trailer Sales is a second generation
family business celebrating its 28th anniversary. Located in Caldwell, the family
manufactures a large selection of products.
Their manufacturing locations, C&B Trailer Works and Snake River Trailer, manufacture Royal T and Maverick Horse and Stock trailers, as well
as C & B and Snake River Equipment Trailers. Their products allow you to haul your toys and your work equipment.
With customer service at the core of the operation, Quality
Trailer Sales strives to provide the Treasure Valley and beyond with the best products, as well as superior customer
service before and after the sale.
President and an owner Jeremy Gordon knows the products he manufactures and sells. Raised on the family farm,
he grew up using the equipment he manufactures and sells.
Jeremy says, “We use the product day to day in and around
our farm so we understand the customer’s needs. That’s
most important.” Quality Trailer Sales keeps a large inventory of all their products, carrying everything from horse,
stock, and hay trailers for the farming and ranching community to products used by contractors – dump trailers to
utility/cargo trailers to heavy equipment trailers. They can
also manufacture custom orders should they not carry a
trailer or part you may need.
As important as producing and selling quality products,
Quality Trailer Sales enjoys supporting their local community. They sponsor various events and youth groups, includ-
108 | IDAHO QUARTER HORSE LIFE
ing the Caldwell Night Rodeo Queen trailer. Jeremy says
it’s important to give back and help build the future of the
farming and ranching community. He says, “Those kids are
going to take us to the next generation.”
Manufactured at their two facilities using the highest
quality materials, and quality workmanship, their products
are strong and durable, as well as affordable. Taking care
of their customer is of the utmost importance to the team.
With a full parts and maintenance department, they carry
a large selection of trailer parts such as lights, axles, tires,
and trailer/truck plugs. Quality Trailer Sales does everything they can to “keep these guys on the road,” as Jeremy
says. “The rodeo guys are in town right now and we have
the facility to service them and take care of them. You can
buy a trailer just about anywhere but having the ability to
stand behind the products we manufacture and sell is most
important.” With a caring sales and service team at Quality
Trailer Sales, taking care of their customer has “always been
and will always be” their number one priority. .
Located at 1508 E. Chicago Street in Caldwell. For more
information on their trailers, visit their website at www.

QUARTER HORSES HAVE CLAIMED THEIR
SPOT IN THE RACING WORLD
One of the best ways to watch these equine athletes in action is to attend an Idaho Cup Race.
These races are open only to Idaho-bred Quarter Horses registered with the American Quarter Horse Association. You can
watch Idaho Cup Races at nine tracks. These include: Les Bois Park (Garden City); Cassia County Fair (Burley); Eastern
Idaho Fair (Blackfoot); Gem County Fair (Emmett); Jerome County Fair (Jerome); Oneida County Fair (Malad City);
Pocatello Downs (Pocatello); Rupert Downs (Rupert); and Sandy Downs (Idaho Falls).

he Quarter Horse may not have been
recognized as an official breed until
1940, when the American Quarter
Horse Association was formed, but it
was born for racing. In fact, its name
was inspired by the standard racing
distance we know today.
Quarter mile horse racing is an
integral piece of Western lore. But in
the early days, it was cost-prohibitive
to lay a full mile of track. Additionally,
it would be difficult for spectators to
view and enjoy an entire race at that
one-mile distance. The solution was
to lay a straight track of 400 meters,
or one quarter of a metric mile. It
was an exciting development, setting up a flat out sprint at top speed
for these magnificent equine athletes
and their riders.
Bred from Colonial Spanish horses
(which in turn had been crossed with
English horses) and the native horses
of 1700s America, Quarter Horses are
muscular and compact. They were
ideal for chores, such as working cattle
and plowing fields in the early days of
our nation’s development. Today, they
are well known in a variety of lifestyles.
Still working on ranches and beloved
as a popular family horse, they’re
also used for reining and cutting, and
111 | IDAHO QUARTER HORSE LIFE
compete in shows and rodeos. They’re
the horse you’ll most likely see in barrel racing, calf roping, and team roping events. They may also compete in
dressage, can be good jumpers, and
are useful for recreational trail riding
or mounted police units.
But their success at track racing
lies in their DNA. With larger hind
limb muscles than Arabians, Quarter
Horses are built for speed. While other breeds are more suited to endurance racing, the Quarter Horse is bred
to sprint short distances, usually between 220 and 870 yards. This is because they have a higher percentage
of Type II-b fibers in their muscles,
allowing them to accelerate rapidly,
long, powerful legs, and leaner frames
than their stock counterparts. Think
of an Olympic marathoner versus an
Olympic sprinter and you’ll understand how different body types affect
each athlete’s abilities.
As the most popular breed in
the United States, and with more
than 5 million registered worldwide, the American Quarter Horse
is here to stay. For casual riding and
professional racing, it’s the breed
everyone loves. .
