Step Two: Decide on a drawer header style and overlay.
Most Showplace door styles give you some
choices for drawer headers. All styles have a
standard header which is usually a slab
header with the appropriate edge treatment
for the door style. On many styles you can
also choose the slant/raised header or an
upgrade five-piece drawer header. On larger
drawer openings the five-piece header can
have a raised panel. Applied-molding,
beaded, and mitered door styles also have
upgrade header options appropriate to each
style. Sound complicated? It can seem so at
first. But this also gives you lots of design
freedom. Talk to your Showplace cabinetry
designer to learn which drawer header
choices are open to you.
Most Showplace door styles are offered in two overlays, called
Traditional and International. A few door styles are offered in
International overlay only. But what does this mean to you?

International Overlay
“Overlay” refers to the amount of cabinet face frame that is
covered by the doors and drawer headers. International
overlay doors and headers are larger, covering more of the
frame. The result is a sleeker, more sophisticated look.
Traditional overlay doors and headers are smaller, revealing
more of the frame. This look is in keeping with American
cabinetry traditions. Since the smaller Traditional styles use
less material, they cost less, too. In the end, the overlay
decision is one of personal tastes and budgets.

Lyptus
Cherry tends toward elegant warm tones, and also darkens

hardwood that combines

with durability and great
beauty. With a look that
brings fine mahogany to mind,
Lyptus has naturally warm
coloration. It normally displays
significant variation in grain
and tone, and also darkens
considerably with age.
considerably as it ages. Cherry has a fine grain that often exhibits
swirls and a flowing, random pattern. Cherry’s color varies from
nearly white to dark reddish brown. Cherry is our highest-priced
standard wood species.
Maple has a fine, uniform grain pattern, and tends toward
lighter colorations. Like all woods, maple will darken with age, but
to a lesser degree than cherry. Maple takes on a subtle mottled
appearance when finished in the darker stains. Maple costs
slightly less than cherry.
Hickory is a heavy, dense wood with vibrant, unpredictable
grain patterns and wide variation in color. It is the outgoing extrovert
of the hardwood family. Lighter stains make this natural variation the
most evident, while darker stains tend to mute it. Hickory costs
slightly more than oak.
Red Oak is a time-honored favorite that has a prominent,
distinctive grain character that may show tiny rays and flowing
patterns. Red oak tends toward warm tones, and is very hard with a
high shock resistance. As our lowest-priced wood species, Red oak
is also an excellent value.

Step Four: Consider Showplace specialty finish offerings.
Showplace offers specialty options that can really
enhance your creation. You can choose from six tones of
hand-rubbed glazing on almost any wood/finish combination. Glazing is applied over the entire surface, then handwiped partially away. This allows the glazing to collect, or
“hangup” in areas of detail. Because of this, glazing is

naturally variable, a unique expression of the artisan’s craft. On
flat surfaces, glazing will leave a subtle clouding and tinting of
the stain. In detailed areas, such as the edges of most doors,
moldings, and onlays, the glazing leaves more hangup, creating
visual contrast and the impression of aging. Showplace glazing
is offered on all standard stains at no additional charge.

For even more character, consider distressing.
Showplace distressing gives an aged, timeworn look to cabinetry, reminiscent of antique
furniture. Distressing creates soft corners and edges, and adds subtle, randomly-placed
dents to the wood. Distressed Antique finishes also
display rub-through. (Antiques are discussed on the next
page.) An even higher degree of aged character is offered
in the Showplace Vintage finishes, shown at right. These
unique creations use a sequence of hand steps that
include special distressing and finish techniques. Vintage
finishes are offered on maple, cherry, red oak and Lyptus.

Cashmere
Other creative options to explore are the many solid-color choices. These
range from the simple appeal of a painted surface to the distinctive visual
intrigue of an Antique or Charcoal finish.
Antiques and Charcoal:
The Showplace Antique finishes add character
and an aged impression with the addition of handwiped glazing. The amount of glazing that is
visible will vary with the color chosen, as well as
with each individual piece of wood, enhancing the
handcrafted character of your cabinetry. There are
42 possible Antique finish combinations.
Showplace Charcoal is a distressed near-black
finish, which lets subtle undertones of Natural or
Cordova show through. Since no printed page can

The subtle and elegant solid-color choices.
The Showplace solid-color finish choices are
crafted with a multi-layer process for exceptional durability and paint opacity. Two base
layers of color are topped with two clear
topcoats, and oven-baked. Your choices range
from purest white to vivid colors, and span a
graceful palette of neutrals and soft midtones. These finishes are offered on maple
only, in almost all door styles.

display visible knots, mineral, and color

The size, number and location of these characteristics will naturally vary. Rustic hickory, rustic
cherry, and rustic alder are offered. Showplace
rustic woods are available in special versions
of the versatile Covington and Pendleton door
styles The natural, timeworn character of
Showplace rustics can be further enhanced
with optional glazing and distressing.

Rustic alder
Quartersawn white oak (above) uses the more difficult and costly
quartersawing method to yield material with a distinctive grain pattern
and superior stability. Offered in four versions of the popular Pendleton
door style, it is the perfect choice for Mission-themed creations. Quartersawn white oak is particularly well suited to hand-wiped Showplace
glazing. The quartersawing process makes the wood grain very receptive
to the glaze. At the same time, a dark glaze like Ebony accentuates the
lovely and distinctive grain patterns that quartersawing creates.

Face frames are 3/4” thick select hardwood
components, dadoed to receive tops,
bottoms and end panels.
The hand-applied finish is sealed and given
an oven-baked topcoat of catalyzed varnish
for lasting durability.
Drawer glides are concealed and

Hinges are six-way adjustable and
carry a limited lifetime warranty.
Shelves are a hefty 3/4” thick
and adjustable.
Interiors are of light birch
melamine for easy cleanup.
The hardworking Showplace drawer
has a four-sided 3/4” hardwood box
that is dovetailed for rigidity. The
1/4” drawer bottom is captive on all
four sides. The standard drawer glide
is a ball-bearing 7/8-extension
undermount unit, out of sight and
away from dirt and grime.
A full-extension soft-close glide is
offered as an upgrade option. Both
are rated for 75-pound dynamic
loads, and 100-pound static loads.
