Welcome On behalf of the Brainerd Jaycees, we would like to welcome you to the 22nd annual $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza! Whether you’ve been attending this event for years or you’re a first-timer, the Extravaganza is an experience that you will never forget. New this year . . . » Our name says $150,000 because that’s how much we give away in prizes but how does $200,000 sound? » Propane tanks are NOT allowed on the buses but will be available for sale on the ice. » Lakemaster and the Brainerd Jaycees have teamed up to create a custom map of the contest site which will be available for download on Dec. 1 We appreciate your support because all of the proceeds are donated to area charities and we impact thousands of lives every year. Thank you and let’s hit the ice!—2012 Chair Troy and 2011 Chair Roberta (pictured). Event History In 1990 the Brainerd Jaycees had a desire to develop a signature project—a project that would rally members, raise money for local charities, and provide avenues for individual growth, personal development, and leadership. It is certain the founders never expected this event would become the world’s largest charitable ice fishing contest and put Brainerd on the map for winter tourism with an event that generates over $1-million in revenue for area businesses and over $200,000 for area charities annually. The Ice Fishing Extravaganza is held in January (typically the third Saturday of the month) on Gull Lake’s Hole in the Day Bay. It is an ice fishing contest where anglers compete for well over $150,000 in cash and prizes. There are 150 spots on the prize board and the values are distributed throughout the list. Contestants are judged on the weight of their fish only—not the particular species of fish caught or length. All fish are weighed and are time-stamped so in the event of a tie the first fish weighed takes precedence. Fun Facts » 100% of contest proceeds are donated to over 50 area charities. » This event is completely volunteer-run. » It takes two days to set-up this village on the ice, four hours to fill the two-square mile contest space with over 12,500 people, and three hours to take it down. » It takes approximately 50,000 volunteer hours over the course of nine months to plan and execute the event. » The Extravaganza has received national and international recognition in Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Field & Stream, and MSNBC to name a few. » Only once in the history of the event has it been postponed—that was in 2002 and it was held in February of that year. » Only once in the history of the event has it been moved to another lake—that was in 2006 and it was held on Round Lake. A: Yes, shuttle bus service is available all day (approximately) 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Q: Where are “will call” tickets? A: The “will call” is the Information Booth which is a trailer located at center ice in the middle of the concession area. Q: Are tickets still available the day of the contest? A: Yes. This drawing is separate from the fishing contest prizes and you need not be present to win. Q: Can I take my prize home with me? A: Yes, your prize is now your responsibility. The majority of prizes can be picked up at Mills Fleet Farm–Baxter after the contest Saturday and Sunday (see pg. for details). Q: Do you have handicap parking? A: Yes, in designated areas with a valid sticker. Q: Can you transfer tickets to another individual? A: Yes, just make sure that if you catch a fish that you fill in your name on the weigh-in slip and not the name on the ticket. Q: Can you use a fish/depth locator and underwater camera or GPS? A: Yes, we follow the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources ice fishing rules with the exception that you can only fish one hole per ticket. Q: Are spectators welcome? A: Yes, you don’t need a ticket to get into the contest site. Q: What time can I start fishing? A: Noon; a cannon will sound. Q: Can I check the depth? A: Yes, but only with a depth finder or a line without a hook. All lines must be out of the water by 11:45 am until the official start. Q: When can I enter the contest area? A: Shuttle buses begin service at 8:00 am. First Time Fishermen » Be sure to wear warm clothes and dress in layers because it’s hard to know sure what the elements may bring. You may start the day in sunny weather and walk off the ice in the wind. » Wear good boots! accessories—consider buying an ice fishing rod available at most sporting goods stores for $10+. » Bring a bucket or large plastic bag—this is a live release tournament so we ask you to bring your catch to the weigh-in station submerged in water. » Bring cash—there are food and product vendors on the ice and many of them only accept cash, and there is NOT an ATM or check cashing service on the ice. You can use a credit card to purchase contest or random drawing tickets. » Bring a radio—the Extravaganza is broadcast live on B93.3 so tune in and catch all of the action. The station also does special giveaways contests that you might want to participate in. » Bring your driver’s license— especially if you are purchasing your tickets at an outlet or on the ice the day of the event. » Bring cans or plastic bottles – we do not sell alcohol on the ice. Glass bottles are not allowed and will be confiscated. » Bring or buy a Minnesota fishing license—we abide by all state rules and you must have a valid fishing license to compete in the contest. » Bring an ice chisel—holes are predrilled on Friday so depending on the weather you may need to break open your hole a little bit. Don’t use your boots. » Buy bait ahead of time—we do not sell bait on the ice. » Bring a fish or depth locator—the bay where this event is held has a wide range of water depths so you might want to have a sense of where you’re at on the lake. » Bring your contest ticket and a way to secure it—it’s an adhesive ticket (similar to a ski lift ticket) so a wire or string that loops through your zipper works best. Your ticket must be visible at all times. » Bring your fishing poles, gear and First-timer Andrew Schultz won first place with a 7.18 lb. Northern at the 2011 Extravaganza. Beneficiaries You helped raise $173,989 last year! The proceeds from the 2011 event were donated to 46 charities. Since the first contest in 1991, Confidence Learning Center has been the primary beneficiary of the event receiving the majority of the proceeds each year. The Brainerd Jaycees are proud to support this wonderful facility and organization. Located on Sylvan Lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area, Confidence Learning Center (Camp Confidence) is a year around outdoor center for persons of all ages with developmental disabilities. The mission is to offer an environment where everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Staff is able to provide and adapt outdoor education and recreational activities that may not be available or financially feasible in the home environment. Activities include boating and fishing, skiing, archery, snow shoeing and cross‑country skiing. As a non‑profit organization which receives no federal or state tax dollars, Camp relies on charitable support to serve nearly 12,000 camper days each year. Only a nominal fee is passed onto visiting families and groups thanks to the support of many.
