Schriever 57 Jesuit TIPS AND SECRETS on How Ya'll Ken Watch A Rasslin Match, Cajun Style Rasslin is real easy to in de middle of dat mat an but if dat don't work, the de one dat got de mostest, watch, an a lot o'fun t'boot. Dem two cajun boys pair off have at each odder. Dey get 6 minutes to pin each odder, ref gives dem points fo making good moves, an at de end, wins. Points got scored like dis: When one boy trows down de odder, or tackles him good, an hangs on, dat's a TAKEDOWN, fo 2 points. Afta one boy's been took down, if he get away, dat's an ESCAPE, fo 1 point. Afta de one boy's been took down, ah he get from bottom to de top of de odder boy, all in one slick move, dat's a REVERSAL, fo 2 points. Mais sometime, one boy will come clost to pinnin de odder, but he don't quite get it. Dat's a NEAR FALL, fo 2 points. But if he hold onto dat position fo 5 seconds, he get 3 points. Ya'll can watch the ref moving his hand as he count to 5. (Ya'll know dem ignorant zebras can't count no higher, no way, Cher). Remember, only de boy what's in control ken score dese near-falls. Mais cher, if yo shoulder blades got stuck to de mat, you pinned, and it don't matter where you be, or what de score is, you done lost. Points ken also get scored by breakin de rule. Some holds is barred, an so is on purpose hurtin'. But watch out fo STALLIN'. Dose boys got to be rasslin all de time or dey be in trouble, ya. Boat of dem got to be goin fo takedowns on dere feet, or when dey's down on dat mat, de top man's got to be goin fo de pin, and de bottom man's got to be gettin out (or tryin'). If dey got it in dere heads to take a rest out dere, and just hang on, why the ref will jump on dat quicker den a cajun on boudin. Mais just so you ken know, de match is broke into three equal periods, 2 minutes fo de first, and 2 fo de second and tird. In defirst,. boat boys start up on dere feet. Fo de second, de ref flips a coin, an de winner picks to start in de UP, DOWN, or STANDING starting position or chooses to wait until 3rd period fo his choice. In 3rd period, de odder boy gets his choice of UP, DOWN, or STANDING. When dey go out of bounds, de ref starts dem in de middle, de same way as dey wuz when dey went out. If everyting is all tied up when dey's done, de boys get a minute to rest, and den dey go on an overtime battle. Dis is a regular bout, but each period is 1 minute long, so de whole ting is only an extra 3 minutes. Den, if dere isn't no winner, the ref goes to dat rule book, and dat book dere, will tell him who de winner is. Befo ya'U get to watchin, dere is two more tings you should know bout rasslin'. If you want to be de winner of a match, never rassle wit an aligator, or try to steal a cajun's boudin. -58- 1) Herbert Guillory St. Martinville (1-97) Kenneth Hayneg Brother Martin 275 Ibs. (Bye) L 2-45 -60- "The Wrestler" By Sandra Rohrer Waupum, Wisconsin I ask myself why young men wrestle at least one hundred times in a year I've struggled to find an answer to that and it never is quite clear. In football or in basketball there is someone else that one can blame. But in wrestling, when you step on the mat Everybody knows your name. So when the hip throw fails or the cradle slips and the lights are what you see, The only thing that you can say is "The mistake was made by me." And who would want to play a game Where, first you must get thinner, Where day after day and week after week You must say "No" to dinner. How can you stand the anxiety? "Please, God, let that scale break!" And the fear of the coach, "You're how much over?!!" Would make 8 wrestler tremble and shake. So three quarters over before the match You jump that rope and run. You're exhausted and weak and all burned out And the match hasn't even begun. Then there's Christmas time And, "Come on honey, eat!!" To turn down Grandma's pleas to snack Is a monumental feat. Why don't we parents stomp our feet And cry out, "That's Enough!!" Admittedly, I've tried it once And say, why would you want to play a game Where all you do is wait? At tournaments (especially heavier weights) it takes hours and more Before you decide your fate. You wrestle six minutes and win or lose And then you wait again. The agony, tenseness, the butterflies Would bring down the stoutest of men. Really—isn't there something that you could do That would be much more fun? Like hanging eight hours by your fingernails Or doing a fifty mile run. Wrestling's a sport that makes demands Of time, of energy, of mind. A sport that asks for true dedication— The truest one can find. It's a sport of ups and a sport of downs. It's a sport of tears and smiles. It's a sport of pain and sport of elation. A sport that takes going that extra mile. It's a sport of handshakes and pats on the back And hugs when you're feeling bad. It's a sport of winning even though you lost Cause the coach knows you gave all you had. It'a a sport of medals you won as a team And of medals you won on your own. It's a sport that says you must play a team game, Yet, out on that mat you're alone. It's a sport of parents and coaches, cheerleaders and fans, A sport of uniqueness and sharing; A sport where the intenseness of this unique little group Is displayed by genuine caring. And once he called my bluff. "You will not go to 98 Ibs. Or you'll pack your bags and roam." He wrestled then at 98 Ibs. And three years later, still lives at home. O.K. Now, why would you play a game Where you die for six minutes or so, And your mouth won't spit, your muscles are rubber And from the coach comes, "Suck it in and go!" But you're on your back and losing the match And you know you could make it short. And you wonder what on earth you are doing there When you could be playing a much easier sport. Then you hear the crowd, the coaches and team They all are making demands. Why you don't give up (and you never do) I'll never understand. Oh, those tournaments on Saturdays You go from early morn 'til late at night— Those below zero days and a cold hard bus When sleeping in would feel just right. And there are so many things to remember to bring Your food, your shoes, your lock. And the coach shouts back, "Did you remember to bring ?" And you panic, "Oh no, I forgot!!" It's a sport of laughter and inside jokes, Of togetherness found in no other game, Where Moms and Dads cry for boys not their own No other sport can make this claim. It's a sport where coaches are with their wrestlers So many hours a week, That they feel each young man's ups and downs; They experience all their valleys and peaks. It's a sport of brothers, a sport of sisters Who show how much they care. They change their schedules to cheer brothers on, They come from everywhere!! It's a sport that builds character through selfdiscipline Like no other sport that's for sure. It's a sport that asks all that a boy can give Then gives it all back and more!! Oh my, I think I'm beginning to see, Though I've asked at least ten times ten, Wrestling's a sport that's taken our boys And turned them into men. So never again will I ponder and ask, I've found the answer to my question, Young men wrestle because—from no other sport Can they derive the overall, incomparable To find a uniform or some one else's shoes to fit Without a certain coach getting wise, Is really a form of genius, THE ULTIMATE SATISFACTION!! But often necessary to prevent your demise. 61- Team Scores of Previous Team Champions Division I Brother Martin (1986). . 237 Jesuit (1981) 215 Jesuit (1977) 210 Jesuit (1989) 190 East Jefferson (1978). . 187 Jesuit (1976) . . . . . . 186 Brother Martin (1985). . 181 Holy Cross (1983). . . . 178 Brother Martin (1987). . 167* Brother Martin (1979). . 164 Brother Martin (1984). . 161 Brother Martin (1982). . 155 Jesuit (1980) 148* Jesuit (1990) 141 Bonnabel (1988) 140* Jesuit (1988) 140* Holy Cross (1988). . . . 140* Catholic,B.R.
