Hallo Laserdisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
Die schlechte Nachricht gleich vorweg:
unsere Versandkostenpauschale für
Standard-Pakete erhöht sich zum 01.
Juli 2008. Ein gewöhnliches Paket kostet dann EUR 6,- (bisher: EUR 4,-),
eine Nachnahmesenduung erhöht sich
auf EUR 13,- (bisher: EUR 9,50). Diese
Preiserhöhung ist leider notwendig
geworden, da unser Vertriebspartner
DHL die Transportkosten zum 01. Juli
2008 anheben wird. Immerhin konnten
wir unsere Versandkosten über viele
Jahre hinweg konstant halten. Und das
trotz drastischer Erhöhung der Mehrwertsteuer. Man möge uns diese unpopuläre Entscheidung daher verzeihen.
Aber das war’s dann auch schon mit
den schlechten Nachrichten.
Nun zu der guten Nachricht. Ein
Festivalbesuch beschert einem nicht
nur schöne Filme, sondern oft auch
interessante Begegnungen. Und von
einer solchen Begegnung werden Sie
als Leser unseres Newsletters bereits
ab der nächsten Ausgabe profitieren.
Frei nach dem Motto “Hallo Hollywood
– hier spricht Anna!” wird sich Anna
Rudschies dann für Sie in ihrer eigenen
Kolumne die Finger wund schreiben.
Ob es nun um aktuelle Kinofilme, um
besuchte Filmfestivals oder gar um
einen nostalgischen Blick zurück auf
die liebgewonnene LaserDisc geht –
die angehende Journalistin weiß, wovon sie schreibt. Kennengelernt haben
wir Anna während ihres Besuchs beim

Ansonsten bereiten wir uns schon wieder auf das nächste Filmfestival vor.
Denn “Bollywood and Beyond” lädt
Mitte Juli bereits zum fünften Male in
die Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart, um das
größte indische Filmfestival Deutschlands zu feiern. Passend dazu wird die
vorliegende Ausgabe des Newsletters
auf der Titelseite vom Plakatmotiv des
Films OUTSOURCED geziert. Mit John
Jeffcoats wunderbarer Komödie wurde
das Bollywood-Festival im vergange-
nen Jahr eröffnet und gelangte vor ein
paar Wochen sogar ganz regulär in die
deutschen Kinos. Wer den Film dort
verpasst hat oder ihn (verständlicherweise) einfach noch einmal sehen
möchte, der kann die US-DVD des Titels ab September in seine Filmsammlung integrieren. Der Termin für
eine deutsche Veröffentlichung wurde
zwar noch nicht bekanntgegeben, doch
wird OUTSOURCED mit Sicherheit
auch noch in diesem Jahr in Deutschland vermarktet werden. So oder so –
OUTSOURCED gilt als unser Geheimtipp für einen schönen Filmabend jenseits der Mainstream-Ware.

Restoration shows how ‘West’ was done
Warner Home Video gears up to release the classic

„How The West Was Won“
Warner Home Video is gearing up for
one of its most ambitious catalog
releases ever.
„How the West Was Won,“ the
sprawling 1962 MGM Western epic
boasting an ensemble cast that
includes Henry Fonda, John Wayne,
Gregory Peck and James Stewart, will
be released Aug. 26 in three newly
restored and remastered versions.
What made the project a bit more
cumbersome than others is the fact
that „West“ is one of just two narrative
feature films produced in the original
Cinerama three-panel widescreen
process, a costly proposition
abandoned after just one other
simultaneously shot MGM feature,
„The Wonderful World of the Brothers
Grimm.“
During its initial theatrical run, „West“
— a winner of three Oscars, including
best original screenplay — was shown
in theaters specially equipped with
three synchronized projectors on extrawide, slightly curved screens. Later, it
was presented on traditional screens
with the three separate panels optically
joined to form a standard widescreen
image, leaving two vertical „join lines“
clearly visible on the screen.
The join lines are noticeable as well on
the original DVD edition of the film
that Warner released in July 1998,
barely a year into the format’s life
cycle.
The film has been a consistent seller
for Warner, and George Feltenstein, the
division’s senior vp classic catalog
marketing, has long wanted to produce
a special edition. But he didn’t want
one with those nasty join lines, he
said, so he went to the technicians at
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging
for help.
That was about five years ago.
Technicians did, in fact, develop a
complicated software program to
eliminate the lines, and about 18
months ago they began an exhaustive
frame-by-frame restoration only now
being finished.
„The film has always been
extraordinarily successful and popular,
with the cast being what it is and the
story being so inspiring,“ Feltenstein
said. „But we always felt that to really
do it justice we had to find a way to
bring the panels together and eliminate
those join lines so it looks gorgeous.
We tried and tried, and ultimately we
found a way. The results are truly
astounding.“
Feltenstein noted that in all showings
subsequent to the film’s original
theatrical run, whether in regular
theaters or on television or home
video, „people have had to put up with
those awful join lines. It was a fact of
life; no one ever bothered to fix it or
even make any attempt to explain to
audiences why the picture looked
funny.“
The new and improved „West,“ sans
annoying lines, will be presented on all
three editions of the film: a special
edition DVD, an „ultimate collector’s
edition“ DVD and a Blu-ray Disc
edition. Additionally, the Blu-ray
edition will come with a second version
of the film that replicates the original
Cinerama experience.
„Dave Strohmaier, considered the
world’s foremost expert on all things
Cinerama, calls it the ‘smile box’
version because it uses the shape of
the original Cinerama screen and
expands out with a curve so it looks
like a frown on the bottom and a smile
on the top,“ Feltenstein said. „It’s
almost 3-D, and it allows anyone who
has a home theater system to re-create
the Cinerama experience.“
Feltenstein said that Strohmaier, whose
90-minute documentary „Cinerama
Adventure“ is featured on all three
editions of „West,“ has been intimately
involved in the production of the
packages.
In addition to the documentary, other
special features include a film historian
commentary, a vintage making-of
feature and the original theatrical
trailer. The collector’s edition comes
with a 20-page theatrical press book
reproduction, 10 behind-the-scenes
photos and 10 postcards. The Blu-ray
edition is packaged in a „Digi-book“
that resembles a small hardcover book
and includes 32 page of press materials
and behind-the-scenes photos.

Auf den Hund gekommen
Die Woche fing recht tierisch an...

UNDERDOGS (1:1.85, DD 5.1 EX)
Ein deutscher Spielfilm, in dem ein paar
Strafgefangene unverhofft plötzlich
Blindenhunde ausbilden müssen. Einer
der sechs Auserwählten sträubt sich
anfangs recht heftig, baut dann aber im
Verlauf des Films eine innige Beziehung zu seinem Hundebaby auf. Zwar
gut gespielt und mit ein paar Klischees
ausgestattet wirkt das Werk aber eher
wie eine TV-Produktion denn wie großes Kino. Wer Hunde mag, dem sei’s
empfohlen. Ab 24. Juli im Kino.
PARIS (SO IST PARIS) (1:2.35, DD
5.1)
Als Entschädigung für das erste Werk
gab es Witziges, Melancholisches,
Sinnliches und Besinnliches aus Frankreich. Wieder einmal kreuzen sich viele
parallel laufende Handlungsstränge
und ergeben einen großen, ganz passablen Film. Juliette Binoche brilliert in
ihrer Rolle. Sehenswertes Kino ab 17.

Deutsche Filmgeschichte
Heute gab es einen Höhepunkt...einen
filmischen zumindest ;-) ...
AUGE IN AUGE (1:1.85, D 5.1)
Dokumentarfilmen steht man ja oft
skeptisch gegenüber. Speziell, wenn sie
aus Deutschland stammen. Doch in
dem Film von Michael Althen und Helmut Prinzler geht es um das Thema
Film. Und da horcht man als Fan immer
auf. Und es hat sich gelohnt. AUGE IN
AUGE ist eine gelungene Hommage auf
die deutsche Filmgeschichte. Sehr unterhaltsam montiert und mit hochinteressanten Statements zeitgenössischer
Filmemacher. Das Ganze dann noch
unterlegt mit einer Musik, die ich einem
deutschen Film nicht zugetraut hätte:
großes Orchester und großer Chor!
Den Komponisten Robert Papst und
Christian Birawsky gebührt Respekt.
Also: reingehen und anschauen.
Kinostart ist der 3. Juli 2008.

Der neue Coppolla und ein Franzose
Meine ersten beiden Film am heutigen
Freitag:
YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH (JUGEND
OHNE JUGEND) (1:2.35, DD 51)
Was hat sich wohl Meisterregisseur
Francis Ford Coppolla gedacht, als er
diesen Film konzipierte? Nun, es blieb
der gesamten versammelten Kritikerschaft leider verschlossen. Immerhin
liefert der Film atemberaubende Bilder
(digital aufgenommen und in brillanter
Qualität bei der vorliegenden 35mm-

So, und jetzt geht’s ab zum
Widescreen-Festival nach Karlsruhe.
Wider Erwarten ist die BLUES
BROTHERS Kopie doch noch aufgetaucht und wird uns bis Mitternacht
bei Laune halten.

Schöne bunte Werbewelt
Die Woche begann mit einem optischen
Overkill:

Der neue Film von Jan Kounen (DOBERMANN, BLUEBERRY) lässt einen
fast nicht zur Ruhe kommen. So
überbordend sind seine Bilder, mit der
er uns seine schwarzhumorige Kritik an
der nur oberflächlich heilen Werbewelt
auftischt. Seine stets koksende Hauptfigur wird hervorragend ekelig gespielt
von Jean Dujardin (OSS 117). Der Film
hat durchaus Potenzial, schöpft dieses
aber leider nicht ganz aus. Ich persönlich hätte mir das etwas morbider und
splatteriger gewünscht. Kinostart ist
der 31. Juli 2008.

Hier mein Donnerstagsmenü:
ELEGY (ELEGY ODER DIE KUNST ZU
LIEBEN) (1:1.85, DD 5.1)
Ben Kingsley in der Rolle eines alternden Professors, der sich in seine
Studentin (sehr freizügig: Penelope
Cruz) verliebt, obgleich er nur Sex
haben wollte. Ein Film über das Älter-
werden und Männer, die sich diesem
„Problem“ nicht stellen wollen. Ein
Depri-Film mit hervorragenden Schauspielern. Ab 14. August im Kino.
FRECHE MÄDCHEN (1:2.35, DD 5.1)
Eine recht flott inszenierte Teeny-Komödie aus heimischer Produktion.
Ohne Ansprüche, aber trotzdem unterhaltsam und ganz sicher perfekt für die
Zielgruppe, die sich mit der ersten Liebe und den verrückt spielenden
Hormonen herumplagen muss. Ab 17.
Juli darf man sich wieder jung fühlen.
Und jetzt geht’s noch kurz in den neuen M.Night Shyamalan - auch wenn
Deutschland heute Abend auf dem Rasen steht. Da hat man dann wenigstens
ein leeres Kino zur Verfügung :-)

Von Prinzen und Panda-Bären
Kein Horror am Freitag, dem 13. - dafür
Mainstream satt.

Da ich den ersten Teil der Saga nicht
gesehen habe, drücke ich mich mal vorsichtig aus: HERR DER RINGE für Kinder mit einem Schuss HARRY
POTTER. Die beeindruckenden
visuellen Effekte täuschen nicht darüber hinweg, dass die Story zu oberflächlich ist. Ab 31. Juli bundesweit.
Aber Sitzfleisch mitbringen: das Werk
läuft 144 Minuten lang (FSK ab 12 Jahren).
KUNG FU PANDA (KUNG FU PANDA)
(1:2.35, DD 5.1)
Endlich mal wieder ein höchst vergnüglicher Spaß direkt aus dem Computer.
In perfekter Animation wird die Geschichte eines fetten Pandabären erzählt, der Kung Fu Meister werden
möchte. Hans Zimmer und John Powell
steuerten einen recht passablen Score
bei. Die ganze Familie darf ab 3. Juli im
Kino anrücken ;-)
Beide Filme wurden überraschenderweise in hervorragenden 35mm-Kopien
gezeigt. Also - geht doch!

23-year-old Kumiko, an heir to the Oedo Yakuza family. Amid
flying bullets and the constant presence of hit men, the
hardheaded Kumiko manages to pursue her dream of teaching
and leading the youth of Japan. With her identity completely
concealed, Kumiko takes a job as a math teacher for grades
two to four, where the worst of the class bullies and rebels
are amazed that they are completely unable to unnerve her
with their outbursts. Kumiko does have some interesting
quirks, such as launching into street-speak when she
becomes enraged, a habit that risks getting her in trouble.
This program has been discussed as the female counterpart to
GTO, a manga (and anime) about a reformed biker dude who
tries to provide guidance to his troubled students while not

the stage, where fate awaited him. On Halloween night, 1926,
he succumbed when attempting to escape from a water tank
while constrained by a straight jacket. While far from being
historically accurate, HOUDINI is an entertaining and
revealing motion picture, and includes close to a dozen deathdefying recreations of Houdini’s magic.

Filmmaker Julien Temple has spent much of his career
documenting the music scene in England, including such
seminal works as THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE
and THE FILTH AND THE FURY about the Sex Pistols. In
1976 he had originally set out to do a film about a different
British punk band, the Clash; more than 30 years later, he
directed THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN, a heartfelt film
about of one of the leaders of the Clash, his good friend Joe
Strummer. Born John Graham Mellor in Turkey in 1952,
Strummer, the son of a career diplomat, traveled a great deal
as a child, eventually settling down in England, where he
became an artist and a musician and took part in the mid1970s squatters’ movement in London. He soon formed the
influential punk band the Clash with Mick Jones and later
headed the band Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros before his
tragic death in 2002 from congenital heart disease. Temple
speaks with many of the men and women who knew Strummer,
gathering them around a campfire in Brooklyn Bridge Park to
pay tribute to the Strummerville campfires where Joe would

In this scathing documentary from Robert Greenwald, the Fox
News Channel comes under fire. First the film illustrates the
way that its owner, Rupert Murdoch, has dominated the media,
buying up TV stations, cable channels, and newspapers
worldwide. Next, Fox’s reporting tactics are looked at with a
fine-tooth comb, revealing a clear pattern of nonobjective
journalism. On talk shows and in other debate forums, hosts
push conservative points of view. Former employees give
anonymous interviews confessing that they were instructed to
put a right-wing slant on their work. But the dominant message
of the film concerns the mantra of „fair and balanced,“ which
Fox uses to promote itself. By examining the way that Fox
collects and reports news, this film shows that it is simply not
fair and balanced. For instance, on Bill O’Reilly’s talk show,
he repeatedly tells guests to shut up rather than allowing them
to disagree with his agenda. Layering of quick clips—so that
we hear O’Reilly tell guests over and over to „shut up, shut
up, shut up,“—is one of the most amusing tactics used in the

in SURFWISE, Doug Pray’s thought-provoking documentary
about the legendary and unconventional Paskowitz family. The
first family in surfing became famous for its large size, for
earning countless trophies, and for its eccentric leader,
Dorian „Doc“ Paskowitz. Once an admired figure in the
medical community, Dorian decided while at the height of his
success to leave it all behind, heading for a life on the beach.
While traveling the world in search of the next great wave,
Dorian met and married Juliette, who shortly began birthing
their nine children. Born in quick succession and never
placed in school, the kids were raised in the ocean and in an
ever-moving camper. Though they seemed unconventional to
outsiders, their atypical routine was actually highly controlled
by Dorian, who wanted to raise his family the way animals
live, free of the material world.
