Congratulations to the Class of 2014! - Woodhaven
CONTACT WOODHAVEN-BROWNSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT Learning and Leading for Tomorrow Congratulations to the Class of 2014! Keeping with a new tradition that was started last year, the Woodhaven High School Class of 2014 was presented for graduation at home on the Frank H. Scarton Memorial Field on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Once again, our beautiful facilities were showcased and family and friends were able to take advantage of the extra seating available at the stadium. The weather cooperated, making back-up plans in case of inclement weather unnecessary. For more photos and information concerning the Class of 2014, see pages 2-3. Once again, we would like to thank the residents of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District for your support of our staff and students. The renewal of the Sinking Fund again in 2011 provides funding for capital improvements and upgrades, keeping our facilities updated and in good repair. This year’s summer projects included: Bates Elementary HVAC replacement of over 25 units Bates Elementary energy efficient lighting upgrades in classrooms Security upgrades for Gudith, Wegienka, and Bates Elementary Offices Land surveys for future parking lot expansion and building projects Patrick Henry, Brownstown Middle School, and Yake Elementary school baseball field renovations Cement and asphalt sidewalk replacement and catch basins in parking lots Gudith Elementary one additional classroom expansion Woodhaven High School main gymnasium renovation (pictured below) Schools of Choice Deadline is Sept. 5 Our Schools of Choice Program is open for fall registration until Friday, September 5. We offer excellent programs from Young Fives and traditional Kindergarten through high school. We believe our staff, curriculum, extra-curricular, and facilities are second to none. Schools of Choice applications and Kindergarten enrollment forms are available on our website at www.woodhaven.k12.mi.us. If you have any questions about enrollment, please call the Administration Office at 734.783.3300. If you are new to our district, you may register elementary students at the Administration Office at 24821 Hall Road, Woodhaven. Middle school and high school registration is handled at the respective buildings. We want to help your child succeed and exceed your expectations so register today! Summer 2014 In addition, on August 5, district voters were asked to renew the current 18 mill Non-Homestead Millage. Thanks to the support of district residents, the millage passed by better than a 2-to-1 margin. This is a nonhomestead millage and does not apply to an owneroccupied primary place of residence but does provide $7 million in estimated revenues to the school district. A big thank you to residents who make up the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District for your continued support. Together, we pursue excellence in our efforts to ensure the best possible education for our students. This is the second year in a row that Mr. Salgat has graciously invited Brownstown Middle School students to have a hands-on experience while learning about the welding program. Students donned some pretty cool leather coats and masks while they struck a welding arc to cut metal. Students also learned how computers can help weld by using the district’s C&C plasma cutter. The WHS students get a loud shout-out for their outstanding teaching skills during the visit. Also, thanks to Mr. Salgat for promoting the WHS welding program and, hopefully, sparking an interest in the vocation for these boys in the years ahead. WHS Welding teacher, Mr. Salgat, and his “welding wizzies” spark an interest in the welding vocation among Brownstown Middle School students who were invited to visit the welding class in May. Curriculum Director, Mrs. Stevenson, to Retire C urriculum Director, Mrs. Andrea Stevenson, will retire at the end of August following a 36 year career in public education. She began her career at Grosse Ile Township Schools where she taught math at both the middle school and high school. She came to the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District in 2000, accepting the position of assistant principal at Brownstown Middle School. She held that position for four years before taking over as principal at Yake Elementary School in 2004. She spent the next four years at Yake and was then promoted to Central Office Administration where she has Mrs. Andrea Stevenson held the position of Curriculum Director since 2008. As Curriculum Director for the past six years, Mrs. Stevenson has worked hard to effectively navigate her way through the ever-changing shifts in curriculum, along with criteria and procedural changes in state and federal programs. Mrs. Stevenson was recognized by the Board of Education at their meeting on August 4. On behalf of the students and staff of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District, Mr. Greathead thanked Mrs. Stevenson for her years of service and dedication and stated, “it will be sad to see you go,” a sentiment felt by many!
