President’s Message
It is my great honor to be the President of the Listowel Agricultural Society
for the 158th edition of the Listowel Fair. The theme of the 2014 Listowel Fair
is “100 Years Armouries to Agriculture” commemorating the
100th anniversary of the hall.
Again this year the fair is looking to be another busy and very exciting
weekend for both volunteers and attendees. Our 43rd Fair ambassador will
be crowned on Opening Night and with free admission to the grounds it
should be an exciting start to the weekend’s activities complete with
fireworks! On Friday night we spice things up with entertainment by the up
Photogenics Studio
& coming country band the Reklaws and Wing Night in the beverage tent.
Remember to check out the website at www.listowelfair.com for a complete schedule of
events for the entire weekend, as well as the events planned for the 100th anniversary of the
Ag. Hall scheduled for July 12th.
The entire weekend’s activities would not be possible without the generous support of our
Corporate Sponsors and the many other local businesses that donate prizes or prize
money for our exhibitors as well as the countless hours of time donated by our many
volunteers. It is only with the tireless dedication of the Board of Directors and the Homecraft
Ladies and these many other volunteers that the fair can continue to be one of the most
successful in the area.
Rodger Schildroth
Homecraft judging will begin at 12 noon Wednesday, July
16th. All exhibits can be brought to the Ag. Hall from
7pm to 9:00pm, Tuesday or 8am to 11am Wednesday.

Ambassador’s Message
This past year has been full of amazing opportunities, great experiences and
lasting memories .
When signing up for the ambassador competition I wasn’t sure what to expect,
but this past year has never had a dull moment. The fair weekend was full of
fun and excitement as I got to experience the fair in a whole new way.
Realizing that behind every great fair event from the western horse show to
the tractor pull, there was a great volunteer or committee member that made
this event happen. This just shows you how strong and committed our
community is to our fair.
Photogenics Studio
Beyond the fair I have had the privilege of representing the Listowel
Agricultural Society at the District 8 Fairs Annual meeting, the Listowel
Christmas parade, the convention for the Ontario Association of Agricultural
Societies at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto and the District 8 Fair
Ambassador competition.
As my term as Ambassador comes to a close I look forward to passing the title of Listowel Fair Ambassador onto
the next person so that they can experience the same opportunities and meet the amazing people that make up
the Listowel Agricultural Society, just as I have been able to.
Amanda MacCannell, 2013-14 Listowel Fair Ambassador

100 Years Armouries to Agriculture
158th Listowel Agricultural Fair
Greetings from Gary Schellenberger, MP
Perth-Wellington
I’m proud to offer greetings for the 158th annual Listowel Fair. The Fair is always a
special time to come together as a community to celebrate our proud farming traditions.
This year however, is extra special as we celebrate the proud heritage of one of
Listowel’s most memorable buildings – the Listowel Agricultural Hall - and its unique
connection to this local community and Canada’s history.
Originally built in 1914 on land owned by the Listowel Agricultural Society, the Listowel
Armoury housed the 100th Battery of the 21st Royal Canadian Artillery Regiment (RCA),
through both the First and Second World Wars. Since acquiring the building in the early
1970s, the Listowel Agricultural Society has done an excellent job of upgrading and giving
new life to this venerable building, while preserving the classic hallmarks of the
traditional armoury style, such as the limestone foundation and accents and hardwood
parade square.
As the Member of Parliament for Perth-Wellington, I am pleased to offer my best
wishes for a safe and successful Listowel Fair. As we commemorate the centenary of the
beginning of World War I, I would like to offer my congratulations on the 100th anniversary of a
valuable part of our local and national history - the Listowel Agricultural Hall!
Greetings from Robert Wilhelm,
Warden County of Perth
It gives me great pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of the residents of Perth
County, as the Listowel Agricultural Society prepares to celebrate “100 Years
– From Armouries to Agriculture”.
The agricultural history of Listowel, North Perth and the County is rich. The
successes experienced by organizations such as the Listowel Agricultural
Society would not be possible without generations of innovators, donors and
volunteers. Congratulations.
I encourage the community to seek out opportunities to learn about the
fascinating history of Listowel and enjoy the many exciting fair events
offered.
Robert Wilhelm
Greetings from Julie Behrns, Mayor
Municipality of North Perth
North Perth celebrates with the Listowel Agricultural Society as they host the
158th edition of the Listowel Fair. On behalf of our municipality, I extend our appreciation
to the Board of Directors for their amazing dedication, the sponsors for their continued
support and the many volunteers for working together to promote and showcase the very
best in agriculture.
Join with us in the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the former
Armouries now Agricultural Society Hall. Many special events are planned to embrace a
piece of our North Perth history with flyovers of WWI aircraft, a war
memorabilia display and a BBQ on July 12th.
Come celebrate with our community, reconnect with
friends and join in one of the many activities at the Listowel Fair
from July 17th - July 20th, to learn how this historical landmark has
served our community over the last one hundred years.

The Ballad of the Barricks (Tribute to the Armouries/Ag. Hall)
Written by Phyllis Thompson & Aileen Bender.
Verse One:
This ole place has seen much action,
As the 100th Battalion marched
Up and down across the floors.
Their mouths were very parched,
So we know they wet their whistles
In the NCO’s above
And off they went to war,
And fought for the Canada we love
Sung to the tune of ‘This Old House’
Verse Two (continued):
Then the Ag. Society bought it
And they fixed it up so fine.
Look around you, everybody
As you sip a little wine.
Chorus:
Verse Three:
Many meals have been prepared here,
With the loss of sweat and tears.
Chorus:
Many buck and does are held here,
And they guzzle booze and beers.
Verse Two:
The ole place once rang with laughter, We’re glad to have this building,
With its bricks so red and strong.
The ole place heard many a shout.
And we’re glad to all be gathered,
As an orchestra played music,
In fellowship and song.
And each couple danced about.
Chorus:
Ain’t gonna let this place look shabby,
Ain’t gonna let this place fall down.
We will always have a fair here
And the Queens will wear a crown.
We’ll take time to oil the hinges,
And to fix the window pane.
And we’ll all be very happy,
And we’ll all stay much the same.

100 Years Armouries to Agriculture
The Listowel Agricultural Society is very pleased to acknowledge
and thank the following as Corporate Sponsors of the
2014 Listowel Fair.
In 1994, three area businesses provided the first corporate sponsorship to the Listowel
Agricultural Society. Since that time, many other sponsors representing area businesses and
organizations, have also lent their support. It is impossible for us to give enough thanks for their
financial backing. Their support has allowed the Listowel Fair to grow and improve each year.
To further recognize the ongoing support of our Corporate Sponsors, a permanent plaque
hangs in the Ag. Hall thanking them for their support. We are looking forward to ongoing
partnerships with these companies and we encourage you to support these businesses that have so
willingly supported us.

Some cut flowers, foliage and woody materials do not
readily absorb water and require further treatment to
prevent wilting. Woody branches may benefit from
splitting cut ends and some need the thick outer layer
removed as well. Some cut flowers (e.g. poppies) benefit
from burning the stem ends while others benefit by placing
stem ends in boiling water or from chemicals in the water.
About 2 tbsp. of glycerine in 4L of water, or florist crystals
may be beneficial. Details are also available in flower
arranging books.
Removal of dust, stains and other foreign material from
blooms and foliage enhances the exhibit.
Re-cut stem ends before placing in show containers.

QUILT BLOCK CHALLENGE
This is your opportunity to join in the making of a beautiful quilt. This is our annual quilt block
challenge and we invite you to participate in this year’s competition. We have had an excellent exhibit
of quilt blocks in the past and we have designed unique quilts which are then auctioned off as a
fundraiser for the Agricultural Society. We really appreciate your support for these quilt projects.
We have put together another great idea for the quilt block challenge this year. You will be able
to pick up your quilt block kit from “Shir-Time Parties” in Listowel, 291-5555 or by calling Linda
Robertson at 356-2468. We will be happy to mail a kit to you if you are out of town. There is no charge
for your quilt block kit.
The blocks need to be submitted to the Listowel Agricultural Hall on Tuesday July 15th (7pm to
9:00pm) or Wednesday July 16th (8am to 11am). The blocks will be judged and prizes awarded as
follows:
1st $25.00; 2nd $15.00; 3rd $10.00
The blocks submitted become the property of the Listowel Agricultural
Society. The blocks will be pieced together to form a unique pattern and
will be quilted and be part of our fundraising event this fall. Thank you
for supporting the “Quilt Block Challenge 2014.” Happy Quilting!
There is still time to
join the Quilt Block
Challenge!
