Winter, the bottlenose dolphin, first captured our hearts in 2005 when she was found entangled in the ropes of a crab trap, causing her to lose her tail despite efforts to save it at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA). A prosthetic flipper is fitted, elevating her to star status. Her story went on to inspire the book Dolphin Tale and subsequently the 2011 hit movie of the same name. Winter now returns in the sequel. This time sees the staff at CMA try to save her from being transferred to another aquarium after her surrogate mother Panama passes away. Dolphin Tale 2 sees a complete reunion of the original cast, with Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, Kris Kristofferson, Juliana Harkavy, Austin Stowell and Austin Highsmith all reprising their roles. The characters are as loveable and sentimental as they were the first time around, which this time sees more drama supplied by a blossoming romance between Hazel (Zuehlsdorff) and Sawyer (Gamble). When Winter is left in isolation, an inspector gives Dr Clay Haskett (Connick, Jr) only 30 days PHOTOS BY WARNER BROS. Dolphin Tale 2 to find a new companion for her to avoid being transferred to another facility. And so a fight against time ensues, eventually leading to the rescue of another dolphin called Hope. Now it’s up to the team to help the two dolphins in their new found friendship, thus ensuring Winter gets to stay at CMA. A feel-good family film, Dolphin Tale 2 offers earnest performances from across the board, especially that of Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of the kindly prosthetics expert. movie review Horror : Annabelle (P13) Starring: Ward Horton, Annabelle Wallis, Alfre Woodard, Brian Howe, Eric Ladin, Kerry O’Malley Running time: 1 hr 48 mins 2 Programme Based on the real-life story of a supposedly haunted doll, Annabelle is more than your average supernatural scare-fest Annabelle of John and Mia Form as they acquire a doll that becomes possessed by a demon named Annabelle. Mia, shortly after giving birth to baby Leah, who becomes the target of the demon doll, looks for answers in a bookstore run by a woman named Evelyn. Her experiences with the supernatural provide some leads and she tracks down Father Perez, who sets about the task of helping the couple exorcise the evil spirit. It may not be the most original scare fest, but Annabelle delivers a cluster of fright-worthy sequences and builds tension in clever ways. Director John R Leonetti uses his keen eye for cinematography (as seen in The Conjuring) to bloodcurdling effect, culminating in a chilling climax. Littered with inventive set pieces, the movie also does well to capture the murderous cult panic of the 1970s. For many, Annabelle will act as merely an adequate transition between The Conjuring and its upcoming sequel, slated for a 2016 release, but the movie more than holds its own and will satisfy those looking for a hefty, paranormal scare. No doubting that you’ll be left pale faced by the end. PHOTOS BY WARNER BROS. WHEN DEMONIC POWERS AWAKEN A SEEMINGLY INNOCENT DOLL, all hell breaks loose. It has been some time since an evil doll movie has reared its sinister head from the depths so when Annabelle appeared in the box office in all its creepy glory, it was welcomed with open arms. Well, as much as a film centred on a possessed ragdoll can be anyway. Drawing parallels with such classic flicks as The Exorcist, Child’s Play and Rosemary’s Baby, Annabelle is a solid horror outing that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll. Serving as a prequel to the 2013 supernatural thriller The Conjuring, the film follows the tribulations movie review Action/Sci-Fi: Edge of Tomorrow (P13) Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Jonas Armstrong, Brendan Gleeson Running time: 2 hrs 1 mins 3 Programme Did you know? Edge Of Tomorrow THINK GROUNDHOG DAY MEETS STARSHIP TROOPERS. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow is much more than your trite and clichéd alien invasion action flick. With characters whose stories you’ll be highly invested in and jaw-dropping special effects, this is one not to be missed. When William Cage, a military PR major with no knowledge of actual combat is thrown in at the deep end to help fight off the Earth’s alien invaders, it turns out to be the first day of the rest of his eternity. Cage gets lucky on his first day on the job and kills one of the alien ‘mimics’, which sprays him with an acid-like blood. When Cage then dies on the battlefield, he reawakens at the start of his first day’s military training and so begins his cycle of restarting each time he dies while fighting the aliens. Taken under the wing of hard-nosed Sergeant Rita Vrataski, Cage’s knowledge of his opponents and his combat skills improve with each day that he is forced to relive in the ongoing struggle against the invaders in the quest for freedom. Live. Die. Repeat. Following his successful roles in Jack Reacher and Oblivion, Cruise is quickly reinventing himself as a solid leading man of the action movie genre. Cruise is working hard to cast aside the two stereotypes that have plagued him his whole career – that he is too short to be believable in action roles and that his summer blockbusters will flop. Under the directorial guidance of Bourne trilogy executive producer, Doug Liman, Cage’s ongoing battle with figuring out not only how to beat the aliens, but break the time loop cycle will leave you gasping for more popcorn throughout. movie review Action/Adventure: 12 Years A Slave (18) Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael K. The writer for this emotional film, John Ridley, was residing in Amsterdam where Anne Frank was a national hero. Backed by Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, and with a budget of US$20 million, the film grossed highly at the box office with US$178,417,961. The elegant music scores were composed by Hans Zimmer, composer for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and more. McQueen was denied his share and Ridley was vindicated by Fox Searchlight, the film distributor. This was later denied by Ridley bringing the debate to an end.
