Murder in Coos Bay
The Coos County Major Crime Team
was activated Sunday morning, Feb. 24,
following the discovery of the body of a
white male adult behind a warehouse
located at the corner of North 7th and
Hemlock Ave. in Coos Bay. According
to a news release from District Attorney
R. Paul Frasier, the victim has been
identified as 34-year old Jesse Nathan
Hayes, transient. By 1:25 p.m., 31-year
old Michael Lee Gertson was lodged at
the county jail at Coquille on a charge of
Murder. At 6:31 p.m., 46-year old Jesse
Jack Longhenry was also charged with
Hayes' Murder and transported to the
county jail. Both were arraigned Monday. An autopsy performed Sunday
afternoon showed the victim "had been
subjected to multiple blunt force injuries
about the head, chest, back, arms and
legs." He also had broken ribs on both
sides of his chest. "While no skull fractures were found, internal examination
of the skull revealed several large subdural hematomas on the brain which at
this time are believed to be the immediate cause of death." He was also strangled. The Coos Bay Police Dept. received a 911 call at approximately 3 a.m.
stating "a murder had taken place near
Hemlock Avenue. Investigators have
developed at least one other person of
interest in the case.
Eluding Driver
Sentenced
A 37-year old North Bend male, who
attempted to elude Bay Area law enforcement officers on Dec. 3, 2012 in
North Bend, and finally crashed into an
Oregon State Police Trooper on the
McCullough Bridge, was sentenced
Wednesday, Feb. 20, to 50-months in
prison. Coos County Circuit Court
Judge Richard Barron accepted a guilty
plea from Cory Ray Schuster for onecount of Assault in the Third Degree;
one-count of Criminal Mischief in the
First Degree, and one-count of Felony
Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. During the low-speed pursuit,
Schuster, driving a 2004 VW Jetta reportedly stolen out of Junction City,
crashed into a pickup truck operated by a
citizen and then a marked OSP patrol
car. Schuster will not be eligible for any
sentence reduction, and will be subject
to 36-months of post-prison supervision
upon completion of his sentence. In
addition, his driving privileges and right
to apply for driving privileges have been
revoked for life.
Gino Pizza Robbers
Sentenced
Short on rent money, a 19-year old female who used to work at Gino's Pizza
in North Bend, decided to participate in
an unarmed robbery of the Virginia Ave.
restaurant along with her 24-year old
boyfriend last Nov. The two donned
masks and threatened the staff for
money from the cash register before
escaping on foot. The employees; however, recognized their voices and Torie
Formby and Christopher Mitchell were
arrested on robbery charges a short time
later. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Coos Co.
Circuit Court Judge Richard Barron sentenced Mitchell to 39-months in prison
and Formby 90-days in jail. The two
will also have to repay Gino's $233.50 in
restitution.
Michael Lee Gertson,(left) and Jesse Jack Longhenry (right) were
arrested on murder charges Sunday, Feb. 24, following the discovery of a deceased person in Coos Bay.
Thefts from
Vehicles
Over the past month, the Coos Bay Police Department has seen a rise in thefts
from motor vehicles throughout the City.
In many of these thefts, the vehicle was
left unlocked and the valuables were in
plain view. Some examples of items
taken during these thefts include: 1)
Purses and Wallets; 2) Money; 3) Cellular Telephones; 4) GPS and other navigation systems; 5) Electronic devices
such as IPODS and MP3 players; 6)
Fuel. Chief Gary McCullough and the
Coos Bay Police Department would like
to remind citizens to please take the following precautions in securing vehicles:
1) Lock your vehicle; 2) Make sure windows are completely up and secured; 3)
Lock passenger compartments inside of
your vehicle such as the glove box and
center console; 4) Never leave valuable
items in plain view. Remove the items
from the vehicle or secure them in the
trunk; 5) Park in well-lit areas whenever
possible. The Coos Bay Police Department is asking citizens to be aware of
their surroundings and report any suspicious activity such as unfamiliar persons
and/or vehicles in the area. Carefully
observe the suspicious person’s physical
features including the individual’s sex,
approximate age, height, weight, build,
clothing, and anything else that would
help the police identify the person.
Writing down the license plate number
of suspicious vehicles and reporting it to
the Coos Bay Police Department is extremely helpful. An officer will respond
to the area for calls regarding suspicious
persons and/or activity. Those reports
are then recorded and may help our department and other local departments
identify a suspect(s). Often the same
individual is involved in committing
Bay Area Police Gazette March 2013, page 2
multiple crimes of this type. Being proactive and reporting suspicious persons
and/or incidents is extremely helpful in
identifying criminal activity and solving
crime. The non-emergency number to
report suspicious activity is 541-2698911. If you believe a crime is in progress, please call 911.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation
into the cause of an early Saturday morning single vehicle fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of an adult male along Highway

update. On February 2, 2013 at approximately 7:42 a.m., a citizen
notified a Manzanita police officer of a vehicle in the brush off Highway 53 just north of the Highway 101 junction. The officer went to
the scene and confirmed a fatal crash occurred at the location. An
OSP trooper from the Tillamook Area Command office responded to
investigate. Preliminary information indicates the crash occurred at
an unknown time during the early morning hours. A 1987 Honda
Civic two-door driven by a 36-year old male from Nehalem was

west Oregon Regional Airport caught
fire and was totally engulfed by flames
early Tuesday morning, Dec. 4. Officials are investigating the cause of the
fire, but there were several downed
power lines in the area because of strong
winds that swept into the Bay Area overnight. No one was reportedly injured as
firefighters fought the blazing structure.
A nearby apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution. The old wooden
building was originally built by the U.S.
Navy during World War II and at one
time was used during the start up of
United Airlines, which began as a freight
service out of North Bend. The fire began shortly after midnight.
Cause of fire
unknown
We may never know what caused a late
night fire at the North Bend airport that
destroyed a large wooden hangar being
prepared for demolition. The Oregon
State Fire Marshal's Office sent an investigator Tuesday following the large
fire that resulted in a mutual aid call to
nearby fire departments from Bandon to
Florence shortly after midnight. Three
potential causes were identified by investigators, "hot work" from a torch
being used to cut metal inside the hangar, to possible sparks from industrial
demolition equipment being used inside
the hangar, to even smoking by workers.
No one was injured during the fire.
Firefighters worked hard to keep the
flames from spreading to a nearby jet
fuel container, adjacent buildings and
even an apartment complex.

Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the
public's help to identify the suspect(s) responsible for the unlawfully
shooting and waste of a 5x5 bull elk found in the Thunder Mountain
area southeast of Glide in Douglas County. The investigating
trooper believes the elk was killed in early February and a reward of
up to $500 is offered by the Oregon Hunters Association Turn-inPoacher program for information in this case. According to Senior
Trooper Wayne Merritt, the elk was found off Thunder Mountain
Road about 3 miles east of Peel County Store in a recently logged
clear cut owned by a logging company. Merritt believes the bull elk
was killed within the last 7 to 10 days. A reward of up to $500 is being offered by the Oregon Hunters Association Turn-in-Poachers
(TIP) Reward Program for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to call the Turn-in-Poacher TIP line at 1-800-4527888, or Senior Trooper Merritt at (541) 440-3334 or
