In the last three years, two of its museums have won the annual museum prize: The Natuurmuseum Fryslân and the Fries Museum. There are plans for large-scale exhibitions here dedicated to Alma Tadema, Mata Hari and M.C. Escher. The Ceramics museum Princessehof is housed in the former city palace and birthplace of Escher. We should also mention the fascinating small museums such as the nostalgic Grutterswinkel and the Beerenburg museum. In addition to the museums, the museum harbour and the art galleries, the city is host to a veritable pageant of theatre and music. The city’s events calendar could only be provided by a capital city: prestigious, spirited and unashamedly high profile.
