M.A.R. Kayaks was established in 1978. The first factory had no more than 50 m2 and there Manuel Ramos, our founder, produced his first boats for self-use. As the sport was growing in Portugal the company increased its dimension. After years of accumulating experience and knowledge, Nelo started the international adventure. Spain was the beginning of an international exponential development, based on the gathering of information and experience. Nelo is now the largest canoe manufacturer in the world, and with no doubt one of the best. The factory has more than 5000m2 and 50 employees. Out of our 50 employees there is a big percent that does or has done kayaking, and that is something that we are proud of, and for sure contributes to our success. Throughout the years we have acquired the knowledge, technology and know-how to be able to produce different types of boats and other composite parts with the same craftsmanship. Boats Since the start in 1978 Nelo has produced more than 30.000 boats, with a vast variety in models, constructions and technology. The first self-designed boats date back to the end of the 80’s. These models were improvements made from original designs, the first fully original design appeared on the middle 90’s. Now all our models are designed and conceived by us, with the help of professional personnel and techniques. The help of our naval engineer and of our R&D engineer as well as a big investment in prototyping machinery has proved effective, making the self-design and conception very rewarding. The challenge of constant improvement is leading us through a development process. This process started with one concept that lies underneath all our designs. During the years it suffered some readjustments, still this concept is used both in touring and sprint boats. The main analysis are made from three main factors: performance, stability and comfort. Location We are based in Vila do Conde, a small city just north of Porto, in the north of Portugal. Besides the main factory and office, we have resellers all over the world. M.A.R. It’s extremely resistant and stiff, so it’s excellent both for sprint training and competition. RAL 1016 Yellow Fin 3 w/Carbon Strap RAL 1023 Dark Yellow RAL 2004 Orange RAL 3003 Bordeaux High quality construction, prepared for high performance. Fin 2 w/Pull Bar Available Constructions G - Extra Carbon Foam Epoxy Vacuum Heat Cured Full Plate Nelo Rotating Rudders RAL 3020 Red SCS - Solid Composite System RAL 4006 Purple This system was conceived by MAR Kayaks. It allows us to produce boats as solid as composites can be using the latest technologies. It has an extreme performance level due to its extreme stiffness. RAL 5005 Blue Italy E - Carbon/Kevlar Honeycomb Vacuum Heat Cured RAL 5023 Skye Blue This construction is specific for marathon racing, and its main characteristics are lightness and stiffness. The balance between weight and stiffness gives this construction an outstanding performance in marathon racing. RAL 6018 Light Green WWR - Carbon/Kevlar Epoxy Vacuum RAL 6029 Green Portugal This construction is thought for river descent, marathon training and sea kayaking. Its main characteristics are stiffness and impact resistance. RAL 7004 Gray Reflect RAL 5013 Dark Blue RAL 5015 Blue RAL 6019 Green Hungary RAL 6020 Green RAL 7030 Gray RAL 9004 Black RotoFix w/Neoprene Maintenance One of the big advantages of the composites is that they don’t require much maintenance; of course there are some crucial rules to extend the lifetime of your boat: -Do not put it in the sun for long periods. -Do not tight it too strongly in the racks. -Only allow professionals to repair your boat. -Never store or transport it inside the cover if the boat is not well dry. - And treat it like a baby. RAL 9016 White Marathon Trimming After receiving your boat, we recommend you do some tests to find your best trim, to find it you should: 1. Start with the seat in the middle position. 2. Move the foot rest to fit you. 3. Check the behaviour at competition speed, the bow should be around 1 cm into the water, in a stopped position the bow should be well under water. 4. You should move your seat and foot rest together until the boat is performing as described in point 3. Usage This is just one of many methods of finding the best position, though it always changes slightly from person to person, but these are the basic rules. Boats should be used only by trained persons or under supervision. The use should be done under the rules established for each boat class. Rudder Adjusting Making your rudder straight is an essential part of enjoying your boat. In order to make it 100% perfect you should use the straps inside your boat: 1. Hold the rudder blade in the straight position; 2. Use the straps one at a time, until the T bar goes straight in the middle. While paddling you can also make little adjustments by pulling the strap on the side the T Bar is tending to. Warranty M.A.R. Kayaks, Lda. offers you a 2-year warranty on this boat, but it is conditioned by the following procedures: - Misuse - Damage caused by transport - Repairs made by unauthorised personnel - Removal or damage of plates and stickers This warranty covers any fabrication defects on the boat or parts, as well as changes in the materials characteristics. To present a claim: - Transport Damage: Claim as you receive the boat to the transporters (on the CMR document) and to the insurance agent on your insurance document, also you should inform us of the damage, as well as send pictures and details. - Other: Send pictures together with a description of the damage as well as the boat number, this will help us evaluate and fix or replace the boat faster. The amount of expertise we got and received from athletes, coaches and ourselves, was huge, and we actually had to hold ourselves back not to operate some of this ideas before the 2008 Olympics. The improvements we have applied are consistent with ones previously made, what means the new generation of Vanquishes is one more step in the direction in the quest of the perfect boat. More technically we reached a new level of stability, glide and performance. The new line is easier to handle direction and glide wise, allowing more comfort what leads to even better performance. Also changes were operated in the deck to help the athlete with more mobility, to give him a bigger feeling of “transmission” and “connection” to the boat and very important a balanced, aggressive and good looking kayak. In what concerns the weight ranges they were kept the same, as well as the sizing in the C1’s where we keep the same 4 sizes. In the C2 class appears the only new model the C2 Vanquish III M. FLATWATER RACING BOATS Racing has always been a priority in our strategy. We believe that the demand for perfection from the professional athletes is the best warranty to improve our standards and our quality. The shape is the most important factor in the conception of the racing boat, still we are spending a lot of energy working on the other factors that can improve performance and comfort of our athletes, that is exactly why all our fittings and parts are thought to give the athlete many adjustments and options. If you have already bought, or intend to buy one of our kayaks, please read the lines below, that way you will be able to enjoy your kayak even more.
