No matter what country you are from or
how long you stay, one thing will be
certain: you will have the time of your life at Nipissing University. The school itself is
small in population, but Nipissing’s history is rich and proud, and is one of the main
attractions in the city that is considered “The Gateway to the North”. As the times have
changed and technologies have advanced, we are very proud to offer world-class facilities,
a state of the art athletic center, and a student experience that will rival no other.
Making the transition to Canadian life can be very overwhelming and at the same time
exciting. The International Student Mentorship Program (ISMP) is a group of Nipissing
University students who are dedicated to help ease your transition to Canada. The ISMP
group will serve as your second family, as we plan fun trips, activities, and social events
that will help you to build lifelong friendships, integrate into the campus community, and
acculturize to Canada and North Bay.
The information in the booklet will help guide your experiences at Nipissing from the time
you arrive on campus, to the time you leave, while covering everything in-between. We
are here to support you in making the smoothest transition as possible! We look forward
to meeting you when you arrive!

Do I need a study permit?

Ensure to begin your application upon receiving your acceptance letter.
Processing times may vary, and can take upwards to 2 months to complete.
Do I need a study permit?
 International Degree-Seeking Students
You must secure a Study Permit prior to your arrival in Canada. The process can take
up to 45 days or longer in various regions. You will need to submit your “Student
Acceptance Information Form” which will be sent to you with your offer of admission
from the Registrar. This will act as proof of your acceptance and will confirm the duration
of your study period.

Entering Canada
You can enter Canada through Pearson International Airport or Jack Garland Airport.
Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is the nearest International airport to the city of
North Bay. You can contact Pearson International Airport at 1-866-603-4495. If you
choose to enter through Pearson Airport you will need to seek travel to North Bay. For
further details on traveling from Toronto to North Bay please see Page 8.
Upon entry into Canada, a Canada Customs Officer will question your purpose of entry and
check your immigration documents. Respond to any questions you are asked both simply
and truthfully. Service will be available in English and French, if you do not understand,
DO ask if an interpreter is available in other languages.
Be sure to carry the following documents in your hand luggage as you will require them at
the Canadian Immigration post:

It is strongly advised that you carry photocopies of all your official documents in a place
separate from the originals. Also leave copies of your documents with family members at
home and email some photocopies to yourself.

Transportation
You have three options for transportation to/from Pearson International Airport in
Toronto to/from Nipissing University campus or another location in North Bay, Ontario
1) Connecting Flight (Jack Garland Airport)
If you book your flight to Toronto through Air Canada, it
is possible to pre-book a non-refundable Air Canada
connector flight from Toronto to North Bay. Pre-booked
flights range from $100.00 CAD - $150.00 one-way. You
can reach Jack Garland Airport at 1-705-474-3026.
2) Northern Airport Shuttle Service
The Northern Airport Shuttle Service departs from the Pearson International Airport
Ground transportation Services desk only twice a day (14:00h and 18:30h). One-way fee
for a single student from Pearson to North Bay (Country Style Donuts main drop-off) is
$109.00 CAD. For an additional charge of $14.00 you can request to be dropped off at any
locations, including The Nipissing University campus.
The Northern Airport Shuttle Service may take several stops to pick up other passengers,
and will also stop for a coffee/washroom break between Toronto and North Bay.
Reservations must be made in advance and pre-paid using a VISA or Mastercard. To make
a reservation, call 1-705-472-9898.
Save some money and make a two-way reservation. It is valid up to one year after your
arrival, however you must know your date of departure.

Transportation
3) Northern Ontario Bus Lines
Ontario Northland Bus Lines is the only bus line to travel from Toronto to North Bay. The
coach bus travels several times during the day, and departs from the Metro Toronto Coach
Terminal located at Bay and Dundas Street. With the use of your host institution’s student
card, or your ISIC card, the rate for a one-way trip from Toronto to North Bay is
approximately $72.45 CAD. For more details including scheduling information, please
refer to their website or phone number: www.ontarionorthland.ca or (1-800-363-7512).
If you are travelling from Pearson Airport there is a Go Bus shuttle from Terminal 1, lower
level, to the Yorkdale Mall Ontario Northland bus stop. The rate for this shuttle is $6.00
CAD. For more information including scheduling, please refer to their website or phone
number: www.gotransit.com or (1-888-438-6646).
It is not necessary to pre-book a ticket for the bus, however it is recommended as busses
fill up quickly around the beginning and end of the semester.
There is an Airport Express bus which provides transportation between the Airport (at all
3 terminals) and the Metro Toronto Coach terminal, as well as other locations in Toronto
Coach terminal is approximately $22.00 CAD. For more information, you can view their

Climate & Clothing
Canada is often associated with cold weather, snow and ice, but in reality, its climate is as
diverse as its landscape. Generally, Canadians enjoy four very distinct seasons. Daytime
summer temperatures can rise to 35°C and higher, while lows of -25°C are not uncommon
in winter. More moderate temperatures are the norm in spring and fall, around 10°C.
In the summer, lightweight clothing and shorts are popular. In spring & fall, when the
temperatures are primarily anywhere from 5°C to 15°C, sweaters or light jackets are most
comfortable.
In the winter, it is essential that students have a warm coat, gloves or mittens, winter
boots, scarf and a warm hat. Remember that several layers of clothing may be warmer
than one heavy sweater. Layers are the key to staying warm in the winter.
Canadian students dress casually for classes and for most occasions. Jeans and t-shirts are
acceptable for both men and women. The emphasis is on comfort and practicality.

Where possible, walk on plowed, sanded, well-lit paths; avoid taking short cuts over
snow banks.
Wear appropriate winter footwear – preferably with flat, rubber, slip-resistant soles.
Be extra careful when getting out of vehicle in parking lots since there may be slippery
patches.
Always use handrails and walk carefully when using stairs.
Leave yourself enough time to get where you are going – rushing will only increase the
likelihood of a fall.
Cross roadways at pedestrian crosswalks.
When entering buildings, use floor mats provided to absorb moisture on your
footwear.
Remember there is a wind chill factor. High winds blowing on a cold day lower the
temperature further, so -20°C with a wind of 16 km/hour can feel like -30°C.
Beware of frostbite. Ears, fingers, toes or cheeks exposed to very cold temperatures for
just a short period of time can become frostbitten. Should any part of your body feel
numb or become pale or slightly blue, seek medical assistance immediately.

In Canada, appliances use 120 volts with plug type B. Plugging an appliance into an
incorrect voltage outlet can cause an electrical fire. Some multi-voltage appliance models
can be adjusted to match the proper current. If not, a “transformer” can be purchased at
any major electronics retailer to do the conversion.

• The legal drinking age varies across the country, but in Ontario the age is 19.
• Arrange a ride home beforehand if you plan to drink alcohol. Do not accept a ride from
a stranger in a bar.
• NEVER drink and drive. Doing so is not only dangerous and irresponsible; it is also a
serious criminal offence.
• Know your drinking limit.
• Do not accept drinks from strangers or let your drink out of your sight. If you do leave
it unattended, order a new drink. Drugs can be put into drinks when you are not paying
attention.
• ‘‘Recreational’’ drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and ecstasy are illegal and
involve stiff penalties or prosecution for possession. Do not offer to carry or transport
such drugs for others.

Transportation
City Buses
You can get around North Bay using the city busing system. A bus pass is included in your
student fees and your bus pass is your Nipissing University Student card. Buses run every
15 minutes throughout the week and half hour on weekends. Bus route information and
schedules will be provided during orientation. Additionally, you are able to find city bus
routes and times on Google Maps.
Taxi Cabs
Buses stop running around 12:00 am on weekdays and 10:00 pm on weekends. When the
busses stop running, or you are in a hurry, the city offers three major cab companies to call:

Cabs generally take 5-15 minutes to pick you up from your required destination. To enter a
cab it is generally $4.25 and the prices go up the farther you travel. It costs approximately
$11 to take a cab from Chancellors Residence to downtown North Bay. Companies usually
send cars, which seat 4 people. You can special request van cabs that seat 6 people.

Downtown North Bay
In the heart of North Bay you will find a vibrant downtown comprised of local shops and
restaurants, some of which have been a North Bay staple for years. Aside from the great
food served at these restaurants, the Moose Cookhouse. The best part about North Bay is
that the city offers you so much more than just the typical student life. From ice fishing on
Lake Nipissing to the skiing or snowboarding at Laurentian Ski Hill, there are plenty of
options for a fun filled weekend in the Bay! ISMP offers a variety of events for students.
Events take place throughout Nipissing, North Bay and Ontario, so make sure to join
“ISMP 2015/2016” group on Facebook and check your email to keep up to date on all
activities planned by your mentors!
Outdoor Activities
If you’re looking for snow you have come to the right city. Not only is North Bay known
for their soft beaches and fresh water lakes, but the city is notorious for the snow during
the winter months. It is not too early to start thinking about buying a winter jacket either.
There are also trails and ski/snowboard trails for winter fun. Students can rent Nordic
skis and snowshoes for free from the school and get a great discount at the local
snowboarding hills.

Banking
What kind of currency is used in Canada?
The Canadian dollar is the only currency commonly accepted across Canada. You can
exchange most currencies for Canadian dollars are any commercial bank.
How much money should I have on me when I arrive?
It is advisable to arrive in Canada with at least 200.00CAD. This will pay for essentials
such as transportation and food. It is also suggested to have at least $500.00-$1000.00 in
your bank account to cover any initial expenses
Pricing in Canada?
Each Province has their own tax regulations. Ontario has a harmonized sales tax of 13%
which is charged to the base price for most items. Keep this in mind when shopping.
Food is not taxed at grocery stores
What is a tip and should I tip service providers?
A tip is when you give an employee money to recognize their good work. It is very
common to tip people serving you in restaurant. It is standard practice to tip the server
around 12%-15% of the initial cost of the bill (at your discretion).

Although most International Exchange Students will pay tuition fees to their home
institution, in unique cases an incoming International Exchange Student will need to pay
Canadian domestic tuition fees based on a pre-determined agreement between Nipissing
University and the students’ home institution. This student will be labeled as a “FeePaying Exchange” student.
International “Fee-Paying Exchange” students who are paying tuition fees to Nipissing
University are also required to pay the ancillary fees (paid by every Nipissing University
student).

International “Degree-Seeking” Students
The following fees concern international students who are studying full-time at Nipissing
University with intentions of obtaining a degree. Full-time status equates to a maximum of
five 3-credit courses or a minimum of three 3-credit courses per semester. One academic
year consists of two semesters; fall semester (September – December) & winter semester
(January – April), for a maximum of ten 3-credit courses for the academic year. Tuition
and Compulsory fees for the year are outlined below:

All Incoming International Students
All incoming international students are responsible for paying residence and/or offcampus accommodation fees. Students are also responsible for any additional personal
and educational expenses. The chart below outlines the amount you can expect to spend
on books and accommodations.
Note: All Nipissing students staying in residence are required to pay an additional $100.00
damage deposit to live in residence. The deposit will be refunded to all students who pass
their room inspection at the end of the semester or year.

Option One: Students pay full amount that is due upon arrival in September 2015.
Option Two (available to students studying at NU for 2 semester on an International
Exchange, or International Degree-Seeking students): Students can make their payments
in two separate installments. The first installment will be due the first day of classes in
Septmeber 2015 for the fall semester. The second installment will be due in January 2016
for the winter semester.
Payments are accepted by cash, credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express),
certified cheque, traveler’s cheque, international bank draft or money order payable to
Nipissing University.

Health Insurance
What is UHIP?
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a health care plan that is compulsory for
foreign residents studying at a university in Ontario. Coverage starts the day that you
arrive in Canada and ends the last day of the month of your departure from Canada for
exchange students and August 31 for degree students.
Do I have to purchase UHIP?
Yes, UHIP is mandatory for all students regardless of any other plans your may have.
UHIP has extensive coverage, and there are very few plans that are similar to UHIP.
What does UHIP cover?
- Emergency room services at hospitals
- Medications prescribed during hospitalization
- Annual health examination
- Surgery
- Emergency ambulance
- Services of practitioners such as osteopaths and podiatrists to the same levels and under
the same conditions as OHIP
- Hospitalization in a standard ward
- Physician’s services
- Diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury
- Diagnostic laboratory and X-ray services
- Repatriation
Note: UHIP does not pay for prescription medication, routine dental care, eyeglasses,
contact lenses, or physiotherapy.
How much does it cost?
Premiums change annually. Accurate fee rate is listed within the “Costs and Fees” in this
document. Payment of UHIP fees for the duration of your studies is due upon arrival.

Where can I go for Medical Services?
The Campus Health Centre located on-campus provides quality service and health care
delivery by licensed physicians, and registered nurses. You can call to schedule an
appointment at 1-705-474-7600 ext. 5261. They are generally open regular business
hours, but have extended hours at times. It is best to call during the day and ask for the
first appointment available.

On-Campus Housing
International Exchange students and Degree-Seeking students will have the choice to live
in residence. You will have the choice to live in one of four residence complexes. There are
three suite-style residences and one townhouse style residence. Students who wish to
live in residence must submit their online application form before July 1st.
Suite-Style: Each suite is fully furnished and
accommodates four students. Each suite features
four private bedrooms, kitchen with fridge and
stove, a living room, and a full bathroom for
every two students.
The suite-style complexes are the following:
• Governor's House
• Chancellors House
• Founders House
Townhouse Style: Townhouses are located on
Nipissing University’s main campus and
accommodates six students. Each townhouse
features six private bedrooms, one half-bathroom
on the main floor, a full-bathroom on the upper
level, a kitchen containing a fridge and a stove, and
a living room.
All rooms are either all male or all female. Each complex contains laundry facilities and a
recreation/common room area. All utilities and local phone services are included.
All international exchange students will be provided with one set of bed sheets, a pillow, a
comforter, one bath towel, face towel, face cloth, drinking glass, cups, cutlery, cooking pot
and pan, and dishes. All borrowed items must be returned at the end of the exchange term.
Room assignments will be sent via email to each student prior to arrival. Assistance will
also be provided to international students upon their arrival at the residence building. It is
important that students plan their arrival between August 24 2015 and August 25 2015.

Off-Campus Living
Off Campus Living is a program designed to assist students with sourcing housing off
campus. Off Campus Living is a point of contact for students who are in need of resources
related to living off campus, such as landlord and tenant board, the residential tenancies
act, Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO), Ontario Energy board, Nipissing
Community Legal Clinic, and City of North Bay. Landlords who wish to advertise
accommodations available for rent utilize the program.
Your choice of off-campus housing will depend on personal preference and the amount of
money you wish to spend. Prices vary depending on what is included and the convenience
of the location. Off-campus housing is privately controlled.
Private and shared accommodations are available in North Bay. In a shared home, you can
expect to pay anywhere from $350.00 - $600.00 per room, and for private
accommodations you can expect to pay $650.00 - $900.00 for one-bedroom apartments;
utilities may or may not be included or extra.

Harris Learning Library
The library is a place where you are able to check out books, use the computer lab, use
printers* or study. The library has study rooms available, silent study sections, and group
study areas. To reserve or check anything out from the library all you need is your student
card.

The athletic centre was constructed in 2001, but with major expansions it is one of the
most modern state of the art facilities in Ontario. To access the gym all you will need is
your student card.

You will receive instructions on how to access your Nipissing e-mail and WebAdvisor
accounts during the International Student Orientation. All correspondence between
Nipissing University and students must be via the Nipissing email account. There are five
computer labs available to students at no charge, although there is a modest fee to print
assignments. The campus and residences are all equipped with wireless Internet access. If
you don’t have a wireless network card in your laptop you will need to purchase a CAT5
cable. If you have any questions or require assistance please contact Technology Services
Helpdesk (A139) at helpdesk@nipissingu.ca or call ext. 4342.
Telephones
All on-campus residence rooms are equipped with telephones (includes local calls,
personal extension, voice mail). If you expect to make long-distance calls, you must sign up
for a long-distance plan or purchase a long distance calling card to use in the public pay
phones.

Internet and Phone
Cell Phones
Stay connected to everyone during your stay in Canada by carrying a cell phone with you
wherever you go. There are many different options when purchasing a cell phone!
Pay-as-you-go:
This plan works out best for a short-term stay in Canada as you only put on as much money
on your phone as you want to spend. You will have to outright buy a phone from a company
and then place money on the phone monthly.
SIM Cards:
This works best with the Pay-as-you-go plan. Continue to use the phone you have in your
native country. Purchase the SIM card from a cellphone provider in Ontario and then put
money on the card throughout. SIM Cards range from anywhere between $9.99-$19.99
(CAD). You must have to own your phone before buying another cell phone.
Contract plan:
This works best for students that are here long term. You can sign up for a contract for no
less than two years and you do not own the phone until the plan is done. This contract
usually comes with an array of benefits that could include texting plans and long distance
calling. Although we believe that you should only get a contract if you are a degree-seeking
student, this could work out for your individual needs.

International Student Mentorship
Program
ISMP
ISMP is designed to help new international students
develop friendships and adjust to their new
learning and living environment. The mentors are
Nipissing University students who volunteer their
time to help support you! Some mentors may have
studied abroad and others might be interested in
going overseas in the future, but all of them have an
interest in meeting new people and learning about
different cultures. The mentors are responsible for
organizing trips, social events and activities for
international students. We recommend all new
international students participate in ISMP but it is
not mandatory.
Members of the ISMP team are also available
throughout the school year to help answer any
questions you may have about your courses,
campus procedures, on-campus living, the North
Bay community, and much more!
The Nipissing International Student Support
Services and Programs Office will send you an email
prior to your arrival at Nipissing University. You
will have the opportunity to meet with the mentors
and participate in individual meetings as well as
group events. It is important to keep in mind that
our mentors are students as well, and although they
have schoolwork and jobs of their own, they will do
their best to help meet your needs.

 Nipissing Email Account
As per the Nipissing University policy, we are required to use your Nipissing
email address. All messages sent/received will be to and from your Nipissing
email address. Please note that it is your responsibility to check your Nipissing
email account regularly for updates and important messages
 International Student Handbook
Make sure to read the International Student Handbook prior to your arrival
 Passport
Secure a valid passport prior to your departure
 VISA/Study Permit
Students studying for one semester (6 months or less) do not need a Study
Permit; studets studying for a full academic year or more (longer than 6 months)
must obtain a study permit. A Study Permit can only be obtained outside of

***Also determine if you need an entry permit called a “Temporary Resident Visa”
to enter Canada. This will depend on your country of citizenship. For details refer

 Banking and Finances
Talk to your bank representative about rates and fees for using debit and credit
cards while abroad. Inquire about money wire transfers should you be
considering opening up a bank account in Canada. Make arrangements to secure
additional funds in case of an emergency.


Arrange with your bank to obtain currency for the host country before your
departure to avoid paying a higher rate of exchange at the airport or in the host
country. Have some local currency upon arrival for intial/unexpected expenses
(food, taxi, shuttle bus, calling card, etc.) Review echange rates:

Travel Arrangements
Make the necessary travel arrangements upon arrival in Canada (airfare, shuttle
bus, etc.) Review the International Student Handbook for more information. Please
keep us informed of any changes in your travel plans.
 Clothing
Pack appropriate clothing, based on clmate and customs.
Arrival Information (All International Students)
 International Student Orientation Week (August 26 – September 6)
Attend the International Student Orientation sessions. Be aware of the services
available at Nipissing University, your main contacts, the rules and regulation and
what to do in case of an emergency. Review the “Important Dates” in your
International Student Handbook.
 Costs and Fees
All international students are required to pay UHIP upon their arrival. All other
payments, including tuition, incidental fees, and residence fees, are all payable at
the Finance Office (F216).
 Passport, Study Permit, and Temporary Resident Visa
Within two weeks of your arrival, bring your passport and study permit to the
Nipissing International Student Support Services and Programs Office (B210) so a
photocopy can be made for your file. Connect with the office to make an advising
meeting with Jesse.

 Residence Dons and Roommates
If you are living in residence, introduce yourself to your Residence Don and roommates.
Your Residence Don will be the person you will go to if you are having problems in
residence. Make sure you understand the residnece rules, expectations, and emergency
exits.
 International Storage Room
Addtional items are available in the International Storage Room in Governors Residence
(2nd floor). The Nipissing International Student Support Services and Programs Office
will give you instructions on when you can acess the room. NOTE: any items taken must
be returned prior to depature
 WebAdvisor
Access your WebAdvisor account online to see what courses you are registered in as
well as your class schedule. Insutrucitons will be given during the International Student
Orientation. Please contact your acadmeic Advisor at Nipissing University before
making changes to your class schedule. Review the “Important Dates” section in the
International Student Handbook for the dealine date to change your course selection.
 Banking
If neccessary, arrange for banking services in North Bay.
 Get Involved
Get involved in clubs, oraganizations, and program events during the first few weeks at
Nipissing Univesrity.
 Confirm your travel plans over the Christmas Holidays (if applicable)
Students studying at Nipising University for the full academic year must confirm their
travel plans over the Christmas holidays. Please contact the Internatonal Student
Support Services and Programs Office and inform us where you will be over the
holidays (ex: going back home, travelling, staying in North Bay, etc.). If you have
indicated on your Residence Application Form that you would like to stay in residence
over the Christmas holidays, please confirm this with your Residnece Life Supervisor.
 Stay Connected
If possible, stay connected and communicate with friends and family on a regular basis.

Before Your Departure
 Departure Dates
Once travel plans are confirmed, please send your depature date/time to the
International Student Support Services and Programs Office
 Feedback Session
Attend the feedback session to provide your suggestions and/or recommendations
to the Nipissing International Office
 Extending your travels abroad
Should you decide to travel after the end of your study period at Nipissing
University, please note that your UHIP coverage will have expired and that you will
not be covered for medical expenses. Make sure to secure out-of-country health
insurance coverage. We recommend guard.me (for more information visit their
website https://www.guard.me/)
 Residence move-out date
All students are asked to vacate their residence room 24hours after their last
exam in December and 48hours after their last exam in April. Special
arrangements can be made for international students. If you wish to extend
your stay, you must submit a request to your Residence Life Supervisor

 Residence damage deposit
For those of you who will not be returning to Nipissing University next semester,
please make sure to speak with your Residence Life Supervisor about getting your
refunded residence damage deposit ($100.00 cash) before your departure. You must
contact your Residence Life Supervisor to arrange a room insepction prior to your
departure. If you pass your room inspection, you will be reimbursed $100.00 in cash
before you physically leave the campus. Students who do not arrange to have a
room instpection and/or do not pick up their damage deposit prior to their
departure will not be reimbursed once they have returned to their home country.
 Totes and linen packs
Make sure you follow the instructions provided.
 International storage room
If you removed any items from the International Storage Room in governors
Residence (2nd floor) you must bring these items back into the room prior to your
departure.
 Transcript
The Nipissing International Student Support Services and Programs Office will send
ONE original transcript back to your home institution for the courses you took
during your exchange. If you would like additonal transcripts for your records,
please make arrangements directly with the Registrar’s office BEFORE your
departure.
 Transportation to the Toronto Airport
Shuttle services from North Bay to the Toronto Airport are available (at your own
cost).
