THANK YOU WINNIPEG
Winnipeg is a great place to live! We have so many
amazing things to experience—from sports teams (the
Winnipeg Jets are back!) to world class arts and cultural
celebrations. We also have an incredible United Way
which, through a network of over 100 agencies, programs,
and partnerships, makes our city an even better place to
live for all Winnipeggers.
Yes, Winnipeg has its challenges. But together, through
United Way, we can ensure that our families, friends
and neighbours can live in a strong, healthy and vibrant
community. That every child is safe from the dangers of
drugs, gangs and life on the street. And we can break the
cycle of poverty so that everyone has a chance to succeed.
As the 2013 Campaign Chair, this will mark my fifth
year on the campaign cabinet. I’m often asked why I’m
involved in United Way. I have a simple answer. I should
and I can.
I believe each one of us has a responsibility to give back
to our community. Therefore I should. I’m fortunate to
work with a great team at Birchwood Automotive Group
and I have a very supportive family who allow me the
opportunity to volunteer with United Way. Therefore I can.
But from a very selfish perspective, I know that being
involved with an organization like United Way makes
me a better person. I’m challenged daily to continue

to improve my personal skill set, and that translates
into my workplace. I’m able to interact with committed
and generous Winnipeggers in every corner of this
community—like the people whose names fill this book.
They helped us raise nearly $20 million last year, money
that is right now changing lives for the better and that
humbles me.
And I see the change that’s possible as a result of
our combined efforts. I’ve met people who rose
above seemingly insurmountable challenges because
of the programs this money makes possible. And that
inspires me.
So why wouldn’t you want to be part of such a
great organization?
Thank you for doing your part. I hope you’ll join me
again in the coming months. A better community truly
does start with you.

At United Way, Leadership is a generous expression of
community spirit and pride. Beyond a gift, Leadership
is a commitment to making our city better for everyone
who lives here. It has nothing to do with your job or
how much money you make. A Leader is someone who
cares, someone who wants to make a difference, and
someone who understands what a tremendous difference
a donation at that level can make.
It is a great honour to be championing such incredible
generosity as United Way’s Deputy Chair of Leadership
for 2013. I am excited to work with so many great people
and organizations in our city to shine a light on the
importance and impact of our support as Leaders.
This book contains the names of 2721 Winnipeggers who
stepped up to Leadership in 2012. Together we raised
more than $8.2 million. Thank you all for your outstanding
generosity. A special thank you also to Len Penner
(President, Cargill Ltd.) for your contributions as Deputy
Chair of Leadership over the past two years.
I look forward to sharing the stories of how your
donations are already changing lives and how we can
continue the work by stepping up to Leadership again

What does United Way do?
United Way works to create opportunities for a better life for
everyone by engaging Winnipeggers from all walks of life, and
inspiring action to help build a better community.
It’s all based on the simple but profound belief that we are stronger and
can have an even greater impact together than we ever could alone.
We all win when our community is stronger and safer, and people are
happier and healthier.
How is United Way different
when it comes to making a difference?
United Way takes a collaborative, researched approach to making a
difference, focusing on four community impact strategies that guide
efforts to make progress in three essential focus areas.
Together, they are the formula for the ongoing stability of a critical
network of strategies, programs and services and achieving a shared
vision of a thriving city where everyone can realize their potential.
Ashlyn, and son David (pictured opposite page) are regulars at a
United Way supported drop-in program in North Winnipeg that
helps families in the neighbourhood meet basic needs and improve
parenting, employment, life and social skills. It is one of more than
100 interdependent programs, partnerships and agencies that form
the essential network United Way supports and strengthens.
A Strategic Approach
Support an Essential Network
As the only organization apart from government to
provide multi-year core funding, United Way supports
and strengthens an essential network of more than 100
interdependent programs, partnerships and agencies
by focusing on building stability and sustainability.
Address Underlying Causes
United Way is committed to partnerships that are
working to find innovative solutions to the underlying
causes of our city’s most pressing issues — to prevent
problems from occurring in the first place and create
long-lasting change.
Build Knowledge & Influence Change
United Way collaborates with leading organizations to
gather research and community input to build awareness,
dispel myths, and inform policies that contribute to
removing barriers for people who are working to create
better lives for themselves and their families.
Inspire Action
United Way inspires people to take action and be
a part of making our city a better place to live for
everyone. Everyone has a role to play and can make
a difference. Whether it’s sharing time, knowledge
or dollars, together we can accomplish more than
we ever could on our own.
Making progress in three essential areas
Despite our unique differences, we all share certain requirements for
a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income
that can support ourselves and our families through to retirement,
personal well-being and a safe, supportive and thriving community.
Helping Kids Be All They Can Be
To succeed in school and life, children need role models and the skills
to help them graduate and achieve their full potential. United Way
supports mentorship, counselling, and out of school programs that
nurture self-esteem, confidence, positive behaviour and a sense of
belonging so kids can grow into engaged and productive adults.
Moving People From Poverty To Possibility
To be financially stable and self-sufficient, families first need the
knowledge and tools to maximize their income and savings. United
Way supports money management and matched savings programs,
financial counselling, social enterprises, and employment training
programs that help individuals and families build their assets for
long-term stability.
Encouraging Healthy People, Strong Communities
The health of our neighborhoods and the well-being of individuals
have a profound impact on the quality of life in Winnipeg. United
Way supports recreation, parenting, wellness, mental health and
social programs that give people the tools, confidence and support
to take better care of themselves, their families and our community.

My wife and I continue to support United Way through
the annual campaign and by building our Named Fund
in the Tomorrow Fund. We’re delighted that many friends

I was devastated when my son Brian took his own life. I
decided to honour his memory by establishing the Brian
David Schellenberg named fund at United Way. I find great
solace knowing his name will carry on helping students and
young people in our community succeed, even after my
