ORDER Sons of Italy T R I E S T E L O D G E | H A M I L T O N President’s Message D ear Brothers and Sisters, the month of May proved to be especially busy for the lodge and for your executive. The Spaghetti Supper, held on Wednesday, May 8th, was a terrific success. The food was delicious and the atmosphere welcoming and jovial. Congratulations to Co-Chairs Br. Joe Mongiardi and Br. Tony Giardino for organizing a successful event. The Spaghetti Supper raised just over $4,000 for your beloved lodge; not too bad for a $10 ticket. This event would not have been a success without the support of all the volunteers and donors. The greatest gratitude is reserved for all the members, family, and Trieste Lodge friends that came out in support of the Spaghetti Supper. Thank you! The Order Sons of Italy Canada National Convention was held from May 18th to 20th in Welland, Ontario. I would be remiss if I did not thank the host lodge, Casa Dante, for a very well run convention and for the wonderful hospitality extended to all in attendance. As I stated, when thanking our hosts on the final day, “a Casa Dante se mangia bene!” Congratulations to National President Josie Cumbo and Trieste Lodge Past Presidents Joe Monachino (1st National Vice-President), Carm Filice (2nd National Vice President) and David Morganti (National Orator) on being re-elected to another term; and to Livio DiNello on being a newly elected Trustee on Grand Council. I also wish to acknowledge and congratulate Brother Bob Savelli, who was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Grand Lodge for his dedication to the Order Sons of Italy (see article included in this month’s newsletter). Our lodge was well represented by our delegates and I would like to extend my thanks to our delegation for their strong participation at JUNE 2013 the convention. Your delegation was instrumental in passing a by-law allowing students under the age of 25 to join the Order, with full rights and privileges, at no membership cost. The Grand Council ultimately agreed with our assertion that we must be progressive in our efforts to appeal to the younger generation, for it is from their ranks that our leaders of tomorrow will emerge. The Centennial Discussion Meeting was held on Saturday, May 4th. A frank, vigorous discussion was had by all in attendance regarding the future of Trieste Lodge. The discussions were wide ranging in scope, but focal points were: the establishment of a charitable foundation for the Trieste Lodge, a new lodge building or community center, a political action committee to address in part the internment, new membership recruitment initiatives, and leveraging all our resources to achieve our goals. More information will be forthcoming. I encourage all members to become engaged in this discussion. In short, we must ensure that as our lodge heads into the next century, it is renewed and reinvigorated. This “Renaisance” is our obligation to the future members of the Order Sons of Italy. At the May general meeting, the Sons of Italy Hamilton Trieste Lodge announced Mr. Fred Losani as the 2013 Order Sons of Italy Italian-Canadian Citizen of the Year. Fred will be honoured for his many contributions to our community at the Gala to be held this fall on Saturday November 23rd, 2013 at Liuna Gardens. Please mark your calendar accordingly. A profile of Fred is provided on the following pages. Congratulations to Fred Losani, and the Losani Family, on this well-deserved award. I once again wish to remind everyone of the event that traditionally marks the end of our year before the summer break – the Sons of Italy Annual Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament, our 41st annual golf event, is set for Thursday, June 20th. Please see the enclosed article for further information. cont’d on pg 2 NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Tuesday, June 11th, 2013 at 6:30 pm L I B E R T Y E Q U A L I T Y F R A T E R N I T Y Presidents Message cont’d Bob Savelli Receives Award of Merit at National Convention Not only is it a fun fraternal event, but much of the funds raised through the tournament go to benefit charity. The golf committee is in need of additional golfers and also of sponsors (contact Br. Frank Merolli at 905-664-5088). Please make an effort to attend, and/or to reach out to friends and associates that may wish to participate. I wish to take a moment to thank my executive for all the effort, time and resources they donate to our lodge throughout the year. Often time is taken away from their families so as to ensure we all enjoy ourselves. Gentlemen, thank you for your dedication to our Order. I look forward to seeing you all at the next general meeting and elections being held on Tuesday June 11th, 2013. In closing, my sincere wishes to you and your families for a safe and enjoyable summer. Fraternally yours, Guido Di Cesare President B rother Savelli has been an active member of the Trieste Lodge since the year 2000. Not only has his attendance at Lodge meetings and events been exemplary, but his service is distinguished. Bob has faithfully been one of the main contributors to our monthly newsletters, spending many hours crafting his much enjoyed articles. His profiles of fellow members, and vignettes of his travels to Italy and other filial lodges, illustrates our Order’s ideal of Fraternity and promotes our beloved Italian culture. Bob is also an active member of the Sons of Italy Choir, and of the Trieste Wine Club. Always quick with a smile, and forthcoming with words of encouragement, Brother Savelli is a role model to members both young and old, and is a meritorious member most deserving of our recognition. Sons Of Italy Hamilton FC 2013 Update SON OF ITALY HAMILTON FC - 2013 UPDATE Sons of Italy Hamilton FC became a reality in February of 2007, when the Hamilton District Oldtimers Soccer League granted the Sons of Italy Trieste Lodge its first team. HDOTSL is the largest Senior Men's league in North America with 42 teams across 4 divisions. In 2009, a formal constitution and executive board was established to oversee the club's expansion to include a second SOI FC team. The two teams "Trieste" and "Roma" are named after the Sons of Italy Lodges located in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2011, the club expanded in an unexpected way to include a Ladies team “Azzurre” In 2013 the club has welcomed an Over 25 team men team called the Crusaders to join the organization. Mission Statement It is the mission of the Sons of Italy Hamilton Football Club to provide a positive, competitive soccer experience for player and coaches. To encourage and promote the game of soccer within the City of Hamilton and the Order Sons of Italy Canada We emphasize long-term player development and team commitment. While winning is a priority in soccer, winning will not be placed above good sportsmanship (defined as respecting rules, opponents, officials, teammates, and one’s self) or what is best for the team or any individual athlete. We believe in sportsmanship and fair competition and guide our actions based on the following principles: 1) Soccer means playing and playing means fun! 2) Being together with friends and family is most important! 3) Everyone is included as much as possible! 4) Win and lose with grace! 5) Respect for your teammates! 6) Respect the opponent and the referee! 7) Offer competitive and pleasurable soccer! Proud Sponsors / Partners for 2013 The name Sons of Italy FC was selected for its simplicity. The acronym FC for “Federazione Calcio” is synonymous with soccer and with great soccer clubs around the world. The logo integrates a traditional shield with imagery reflecting the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Sons of Italy Golden Lion and the colours of the Italian Flag. The blue kits the players wear connects us to the colours of the many famous National Italian Soccer teams of the past. The SOI FC motto of "Friends, Family and Fun" and pre game chant of "SOI, SOI, SOI!" truly reflect the team's character that was developed during our inaugural season. In September of 2009, the Sons of Italy FC sponsored and held the 1st SOI FC Calcio Masters Cup with an annual Championship Game between the Sons of Italy Trieste and Roma teams. In September 2012 partnering with Festitalia the tournament was expanded to include four Seniors Men’s Soccer team and 2 ladies teams who play for the Festitalia’s Sons of Italy Morganti-Giardino Calcio Master’s Cup. The cup has been named in honour of two longtime Sons of Italy members David Morganti and Tony Giardino. Both David and Tony are avid sports enthusiasts and have been instrumental in their support of SOI FC since its inception. In 2013, the tournament will expand to include 8 Senior Teams, a ladies cup and an under 35 Division. 2013 SOI FC Azzurre Ladies Team Sons Of Italy Hamilton FC 2013 Update SOI FC TRIESTE – 2013 SCHEDULE (Men’s Over 35) DATE TIME HOME VISITOR LOCATION 16-May 9:00p.m. GLASGOW SOI TRIESTE MOHAWK # 3 19-May 9:00 a.m. SOI TRIESTE HELLAS STARS ANCASTER COMM # 2 26-May 11:00a.m. SOI TRIESTE PROTO 4 SACKVILLE PARK # 1 A 2-Jun 11:00a.m. WHITE EAGLES SOI TRIESTE HERITAGE GREEN # 1 9-Jun 11:00a.m. SOI TRIESTE SUMADIJA SACKVILLE PARK # 1 A 16-Jun 9:00 a.m. FALCONS SOI TRIESTE BILLY SHEERING 1 A 23-Jun 9:00 a.m. F C DARDANIA SOI TRIESTE MOHAWK # 3 30-Jun 9:00 a.m. SOI TRIESTE LOTOS HRVAT MOHAWK # 3 7-Jul 9:00 a.m. NUOVA ITALIA SOI TRIESTE CARSON PARK # 1 C 14-Jul 11:00a.m. SOI TRIESTE F C PANGAEA ANCASTER COMM # 2 21-Jul 11:00a.m. ANCASTER SOI TRIESTE ANCASTER COMM # 2 28-Jul 11:00a.m. SOI TRIESTE GLASGOW ANCASTER COMM # 2 11-Aug 9:00 P.M.
