In the spirit of preserving a better quality of life, the Cuervo family founded their boutique “La Casa” in the spring of 1882 on the prestigious Quinta Avenida of Havana. Numerous international personalities from the worlds of literature, science, film and politics visited the shop whenever they were on the island as evidenced by the guest book and photographs found only a few years ago in the basement rooms of the old shop. 18 19 In a place beyond the sea, another time …another rhythm The pursuit of adventure and an aristocratic lifestyle lured a circle of intellectuals, One hundred years later, in a world even more characterized by stress, many still travelers, businessmen, adventurers and bon vivants to the Havana of that era. reject the chaos and seek to once again find a better quality of life while embra- While fully aware of the inevitable and rapid changes around them--brought cing the old values. about by “progress”--this unique mix of individuals maintained a certain distance from the chaos. They understood that the obvious remedy was to “cultivate the spirit”. They embraced the true satisfaction derived from knowing oneself and savoring the pleasures of another time. 20 21 125 years of history At the end of the 19th century, Armando Rio y Cuervos and his brothers worked diligently to expand the jewelry and watch-making business founded by their uncle Ramon; hence the name “Cuervo and Sobrinos”. In less than half a century, the brand’s combination of fine quality and Latin spirit conquered the Americas. (Manuela—I suggest a shorter version than the Spanish for following): The enterprise quickly became so famous that Cuervo y Sobrinos decided to expand its production network by opening three other outlets in strategic European nerve centers. Successful operations were quickly established in Pforzheim, Germany and on rue Mezlay in Paris. Soon their third new site was opened at la Chaux-de-Fonds, at the very heart of Swiss watch-making. The brand was greatly damaged by the political events that occurred on the island A part of the Cuervo family fled Havana for exile in Europe, and the brand lay dormant for 40 years. In 2002, Marzio Villa, the current president of Cuervo y Sobrinos, officially relaunched the brand in Europe. Now, 125 years after its inception, the brand is represented in 25 countries and its fabrication is entrusted to renowned watchmakers in the Jura region of Switzerland. 22 23 Escape and refinement It was during this golden age that Havana was known, at least in Europe, as the “Pearl of the Caribbean”. In this paradise, even the climate encouraged lingering outdoors in opulent gardens, strolling along the avenues, or enjoying the beautiful ocean and beaches. The social life enjoyed by international visitors was unique, as all reveled in the best Havana offered. Glorious parties in magnificent homes, luxury hotels, gleaming new cars, casinos, outdoor bars and piazzas full of enchantment all enhanced the magical existence of this fortunate and worldly group. 24 Women and men dressed elegantly for dinners that would last until the early hours of the morning. Time took on a different dimension. Gentlemen relaxed sipping exotic cocktails and smoking delightfully aromatic cigars, discussing literature, politics and the economy. The Pearl of the Caribbean was an escape and a panacea for the urgent pace of life brought on by the progress of the early 20th century. Legend A passion for beautiful objects. 26 27 Architecture, furniture design, sleek automobile silhouettes and the use of rare and precious materials marked this as a unique period in history. It was a time of avant-garde elegance. Inspired by these extraordinary times and stylistic sensibilities, Cuervo y Sobrinos today remains faithful to the principles that underscore a style capable of resisting both time and changing fashion. Still following its own path towards that luxurious standard of living, the brand reproduces in each watch the unmistakable perfume of Havana. At the time, the island was considered a meeting place for famous people from all walks of life. Although the visitors had very different backgrounds, they had one trait in common. Each indulged a taste and an appreciation for the beautiful things in life. Famous architects were encouraged to display their imagination and exuberance in the intricate and opulent buildings that even today stand as a testament to excellence and innovation in the world of design. 28 29 Cuervo y Sobrinos: A Renowned Family Business During this era Cuervo y Sobrinos sold, in addition to its own line, the most important timepieces in the world. Over the years the brand earned such a level of prestige that leading clock and watch manufacturers engraved its name along with their own on the dials of the watches sold in the boutique, just like Tiffany in New York and Cartier in Paris. Thus the Cuervo y Sobrinos name became more renowned and even more sought after. Several of these original antique watches Don Ramon y Cuervo in the exclusive boutique La Casa on 5th Avenue in Havana have reached us today thanks to the passion of collectors who seek out these rare, valuable co-branded models. The Cuervos, a family of inventive jewellers and watchmakers 32 33 Over the years, the watch-making family continued to strive for mechanical perfection and innovative design. Originally conforming to the taste and style of the various eras, they eventually imposed their own ideas and style into the lines. Throughout their history, Cuervo y Sobrinos has produced and sold watches prized by watch connoisseurs and collectors as examples of the finest in watchmaking craftsmanship. These watches are classics with a style and character capable of resisting the passing of time and ever-shifting fashion trends. 34 35 La Casa, Luxury Jewelry and Watches As a result of bold designs and a discriminating selection of products, the Building on its success, the brand became as renowned as the great luxury jewelers boutique quickly distinguished itself as a point of reference for all of America. in New York, Paris and Rome. It soon became necessary to open 3 new branches in Europe. The branch in La Chaux-de- Fonds was truly the creative center for the watches. It was there that the components required in the manufacturing process were made and the watches assembled. In this region all luxury brands conducted their business and secured important distribution arrangements with prestigious jewelers throughout the world. In our investigations into the history of the brand, we have uncovered tantalizing rumors that a Cuervo y Sobrinos manufacturing center existed in the 1930s in that region. 36 37 The Watches of Cuervo y Sobrinos: Symbols of a Unique Lifestyle and Spirit By the late 1940s, the Cuervo y Sobrinos name had become one of the most important brands in the Americas. The boutique became an obligatory destination for some of the most illustrious visitors to Havana during that era. Einstein, Caruso, Churchill, Hemingway, Gable, Eleonora Duse, Pablo Neruda --all are names noted in the Cuervo y Sobrinos “golden book”, the historic record kept by the staff at La Casa. Throughout more than 100 years of activity, Cuervo y Sobrinos has had the pleasure and honor of recording in their book the names of famous people from all walks of life: scientists, artists, writers and film stars. 38 39 Breeding and Elegance The watches of Cuervo y Sobrinos have achieved their classic appeal through decades of dedication and attention to the elegant characteristics that ensure a style that transcends passing time and fashion. 40 41 Latin Time: Because Time in Havana Has a Different Rhythm Time in Havana almost seems to swell, to lose the frenzied preoccupation with tasks that must be done. In Havana everyday routine was a pleasure to savor… With this in mind, we believe that a special type of time is encased in the watches of Cuervo y Sobrinos. Caribbean time. This sublime rhythm is measured slowly. This is the rhythm of old Havana. This is the essence of elegance and true refinement. In this languid culture of “el tiempo lento” where time gently flows in the heat of the tropics, the individual is able to fully appreciate the luxury of time. Time is the most precious gift. Every second counts. Every distinct perfume and each event is significant. This culture was –and still is– the matrix, the foundation and the very essence of Cuervo y Sobrinos from 1882 until today. It is in this passionate celebration of the Caribbean culture combined with the profound reverence for the watch-making craft that Cuervo y Sobrinos again takes the stage with the world’s most famous watch-producing houses. 42 43 These “new period watches” are not replicas of the original models. Instead they are the natural heirs, evolved but true in every sense to the spirit that built the brand. A few limited examples–movements of the original era that were never mounted, projects, designs and sketches–have been found intact in the shop’s “caveau”. All of these materials are of priceless value for the continuation in time of the Cuervo y Sobrinos identity. TIME THAT MOVES SLOWLY... Even as we rush and hurry through our modern days, the excellence of the brand and the remembrance of a languid time remain with us. All the watch cases are extracted from a single block of metal by meticulous artisans. Numerous stages are required to prepare each piece and the frequent intervention of capable hands presides over these complex operations. 50 51 A Work of Art Each phase of manufacture passes through continuous and strict quality controls, The dials, made by specially trained artisans, where all components are methodically prepared before the watch leaves the are enameled porcelain. Dial materials are selected with attention to the effects of light or background so that the dials are aesthetically pleasing–even daring–but always in keeping with classic Swiss tradition. The array of classic dial colors is frequently supplemented by new hues that demonstrate the brand’s commitment to style and innovation co-existing with classic elegance. Each gold case is then heat-tempered to give it strength and shine, finally ending with the numbering and engraving. Each steel case receives careful hand-polishing that gives the case its brilliance and smooth surface. This fabrication process for the cases is the same procedure that has been used by a range of classic colors. Again, other materials are also used when appropriate to Cuervo y Sobrinos for more than a century. It is this old-fashioned craftsmanship the styling of the watch and, as always, in keeping with tradition. that affords a high degree of quality control over each item and all its components. The process scrupulously follows the guidelines mandated in the original designs discovered in Havana. 52 The strap, made of the finest crocodile skin, is entirely hand-sewn and available in The clasp, made of 18kt rose gold or steel depending on the case material, is engraved with the Cuervo y Sobrinos brand emblem. Some models are available with a metal bracelet. 53 The Continuous search for Innovation Robusto. The Robusto line pays tribute to the 21st century man: cosmopolitan, elegant and active. Created in 2005, its completely curved design has lent itself to the development of the brand’s most important complications. Esplendidos. The line originates in the heart of the architectural revolution that characterized the Art Deco years. An example of extravagant design with pure lines, it reflects the avant-garde soul of the era. Prominente. The watch specially made for world travelers. Adventuresome and sensually masculine, the line was inspired by one of the greatest cigars ever made. 54 Torpedo. Named after the classic round cigar, this line is distinguished by its timeless elegance. Its 43 mm diameter gives it remarkable charisma. 55 Innovative materials – Carbon fiber Intrepid, thoroughbred and born to conquer. With innovative materials and traditional craftsmanship, Cuervo y Sobrinos proves its skill in producing watches of the highest quality. The new integration of carbon fiber gives to the Prominente and Robusto models a profoundly masculine edge. Prominente Chrono 125th Anniversary Limited Edition. 125 pieces. Robusto Chrono 125th Anniversary Limited Edition. 125 pieces. 56 57 A tribute to legacy – Tourbillon and Perpetual Calendar The Robusto Tourbillon in rose gold, equipped with the Cuervo y Sobrinos caliber 2854, represents a world first with both its tourbillon carriage and ultra-light hands made from high-tech silicium. In tribute to its 125th anniversary and to its watch-making legacy, the brand has adorned this model –issued in a limited edition of 8 pieces–with a page from its own history. Lending a historical touch to the plate of the tourbillon movement is an engraved illustration depicting Don Cuervo in his original workshop. The CYS 2854 is the brand’s first tourbillon movement. Featuring a unique innovation, the usually round carriage of the tourbillon is crafted into an unusual shape reflecting the Cuervo y Sobrinos crest. 58 59 100 years measured in minutes, the Robusto Perpetual GMT radiates the very soul of the brand–a true classic down to the smallest details. The rose gold case houses a mechanical self-winding movement distinguished from customary perpetual calendar movements by its GMT function. All the functions are adjusted to run for a century and will require no manual adjustment when the watch is regularly worn. The understated cream dial is rich and complex with a woven motif accented by brown, gold and bronze. This example of extraordinary craftsmanship is issued in a limited edition of 30 pieces. With its continuous search for perfection in time, Cuervo y Sobrinos belongs to a select group of great Swiss watch-making houses. 60 61 Aestetic Balance The very essence of 1940s luxury and refinement, the Cuervo y Sobrinos collections were inspired by designs, sketches and outlines created by the watchmakers of that period. The brand, incorporating the personal style of its creators, today reinterprets the pure, timeless lines of another age. The aesthetic balance is expressed in the many subtle details that recall the Latin origin of the brand. The brand’s expertise in the design and creation of the dials is unrivalled. The result is audacious, original timepieces. 62 63 In a design inspired by a different perception of time and space, Cuervo y Sobrinos’ To create the 5 classic dial colors in its collections, Cuervo y Sobrinos takes Prominente Convertible watch experiments with the transparency and spatial inspiration from the essence of an era where subtle tones underscored a time of volume of the dial. Argenté Cream Rose Tobacco Black For the black and silver tone dials, the atmosphere of Havana and vintage perfume can be appreciated. Through the sultry tones like tobacco, cream, rosewood–and also indigo blue and strawberry–we are reminded of the tropics. The polished guilloche detailing finishes the dial with a languid wave pattern that allows the reflection and luminosity of the colors like the waters of the warm tropical sea. 64 65 Timeless timepieces Unforgettable Cuervo y Sobrinos 66 67 Timless timepieces Unforgettable Cuervo y Sobrinos The Symbol of Elegance and Latin Time The contemporary Latin spirit is not only expressed through the understated, fluid silhouettes of the watches but also through the names given to each line. Esplendidos, Prominente, Torpedo and Robusto. These names recall the famous cigar cuts of Havana and the celebration of time that is required to savor their intense aromas. 68 69 EsplÉndidos The 1940s lines and style of these watches reflects the architectural and design trends of that era. The original concept of this model was heavily influenced by the avant-garde movement. This was a period during which architecture evolved enormously. The sinuous and complex lines of the new building construction imposed an entirely different aesthetic to the standards of elegance and to the designs of the time. Havana in this era provided the perfect setting for major architects at the vanguard of this new wave to put into practice their exuberance in the opulent structures that are still admired today. These structures stand as monuments to a period of great innovation and progress in the world of design. The Esplendidos model possesses all of these characteristics. The result is an elegant watch made entirely in gold or steel, following the legacy of the designs recovered in the old workshop. 70 71 Mono-pusher Chronograph with subdials and coaxial detailing. Featuring the proprietary Cuervo y Sobrinos 2450 caliber. Series limited to 28 pieces in rose gold and 10 pieces in white gold. Espléndidos retrograde- symbol of perfect elegance. 72 73 Prominente The decisive character of the Prominente model has not dimmed since Cuervo y Sobrinos interpreted it over a century ago. Prominente is the name of one of the most important classic cigar cuts that exist among the true puros cubanos. A “prominente” cigar receives the name due to its imposing dimension–it is one of the biggest in the industry. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Prominente model is similarly imposing. This is a watch for great adventurers and travelers. Therefore the generous and slightly convex case houses 2 separate mechanical movements that allow the wearer to monitor time in two zones. A true work of art, the case is made of either rose gold or steel; the see-through case back is secured with six screws. The dial features stylized numbers typical of the 1930s and is available in cream, rosewood, black, tobacco or silver. The (APPLIED?)numbers are color coordinated to complement the dial color. (?DECALQUE?) HELP MANUELA!! 74 75 Masculine sensuality in the steel Prominente with diamonds. Prominente Chrono, with carbon fiber inserts on the case and the dial 76 77 Robusto An object of rare elegance, designed for those limited few who cultivate a special way of life, perhaps distant from our present times. Borrowing the name of a specific cigar cut and shape, Cuervo y Sobrinos revolutionizes design with this elegant watch in solid gold or stainless steel, dedicated to the cosmopolitan, elegant and active 21st century man. Designed as a sports watch by the original Havana craftsmen, the modern version has a more urbane feel with a slightly sleeker and larger silhouette. The Robusto model contains the technical elements of the grand watches. The combination of a sturdy sport watch with the elegance of the gold or stainless construction follows the philosophy of exalting the genuine in life rather than just superficial appearances. Rugged and sophisticated, this is a watch of distinct refinement and understatement for those who value a lifestyle that recognizes the essence of Havana: el tiempo lento. 78 79 Audacious, the Robusto Chrono features carbon fiber inserts in the case and dial. The Robusto Buceador is sporty and reflects the indigo blue of the Caribbean sea. 80 81 Torpedo Torpedo is the watch of aesthetic confidence, of beautiful form with excellent craftsmanship. Torpedo is named for the classic round cigar. Its substantial dimensions are imposing without exceeding elegant proportion. This round model is a classic of the Cuervo y Sobrinos collection. The exquisite manufacturing of the case maintains the character of the historic model. A deep groove cut around the case circumference which extends into the four thick brackets reinforces a recurring leit motif of the brand’s aesthetic. Not for consumers who are slaves to fashion, this classic round watch offers the consumer an elegant silhouette from yesterday with the superb quality of production still employed today. 82 83 Ultimate elegance, the classic Torpedo with diamonds and black sapphires Torpedo Chrono-Tour de Espana 2006 edition with tachymeter function characterized by its yellow dial and bracelet of panama material (what is this???canvas?) with contrast yellow stitching to coordinate with the dial. 84 85 Humidors for “Habanos” All the Cuervo y Sobrinos models are very carefully packaged and delivered in a full-sized humidor expressly made for the brand. Havana is famous the world over for having invented the cigar. To enjoy a cigar is a rite, a ceremony of methodical rituals from the first moment in which the smoker selects the cigar, lights it and begins to savor the experience. The humidor is made of tropical or Spanish cedar--the traditional material used to insure the tobacco’s proper conservation. This is the only material (other than tobacco itself) that, thanks to its distinctive aroma, enriches the cigar’s flavor. To protect the natural aroma, neither glues nor chemical products are used inside the box. The hinges and all metal parts inside the humidifier are gold-plated to prevent any corrosion from humidity. The perfect conservation and preservation of character follow the same principles for a cigar as for a watch. Only with an appreciation of the perfect conditions and legacy can you experience an informed savoring of a cigar or the prolonged enjoyment of a watch that will outlast the passing of time. To enjoy a cigar or contemplate the intricacies of a fine watch is to allow oneself the gift of pleasure. One honors time and celebrates the fullness of life. 86 87 Chronology 1882-2002 1882 1890 - 1900 1950 Ramon y Cuervo, master watchmaker/jeweller, The Cuervo y Sobrinos brand is founded.
