Now that you know we‟re not a couple of loonies (of course, I suppose that‟s all in the
eyes of the beholder! And, we do tend to get a bit silly sometimes!), let‟s get on with the
report!
A Few Quick Facts About Toxins
We feel that before you try to cleanse yourself of “toxins”, it would be great for you to
know exactly how they can affect your body and why “detoxing” is so important!
The world has become a toxic place and that’s
had a devastating impact on our bodies and
health. From industry to the products we use on a
daily routine basis, toxins have saturated our lives.
According to a 2002 Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) study, at least two-thirds of
Americans live in areas where toxic chemicals in
the air raise the risk of cancer.
Here are some other interesting findings: In 1901,
cancer was rare: 1 out of 8,000 people got cancer.
Since the Industrial Revolution, the cancer rate today has risen to 1 in 2.

But wait… there’s more!
The Consumer Product Safety Commission connects 150
chemicals commonly found in our homes to allergies,
birth defects, cancer and psychological disorders.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit
organization, analyzed the toxic “body burden” of Americans.
The researchers tested for 525 toxins and found 455 different
toxins in their research subjects. On average, participants’
bodies contained 60 toxins that could be detrimental to
the stomach or intestines, 57 that could affect the health of the reproductive
system, and 52 that could affect the brain and nervous system.
We don’t tell you these things to scare you, only to make you aware of what the
situation in our world is like and why cleansing and detoxifying your body – in the right
way – is so very important.
With this in mind let’s take a closer look at the 3 biggest mistakes people make
when detoxing and how to avoid them. We will touch on the misinformation that flows
so readily through the detoxing community and give you the right information so you can
make more informed decisions and be more aware of some of the most common pitfalls.

Mistake #1: Depriving Your Body Instead of
Nourishing It While Detoxing!
There’s a word that’s been attached to detox programs for thousands of years, and
it can be a very bad word: fasting. Fasting and other caloric restriction programs has
been used within religions to create a “spiritual awakening”, in some cultures for healing,
and in our own backyard in Hollywood as part of crash diets. However, the
disadvantages and health risks of fasting far outweigh the benefits and could even be
very dangerous if not done correctly and under close supervision of a medical or nutrition
professional.
When you go the extreme with restricting calories
and essential nutrients from your body it shouldn’t
take a scientist to tell us that’s a bad thing!
Unfortunately many of the side-effects that people think
of when they hear the word “detox” comes from this type
of deprivation. Headaches, irritability, nausea, low
energy, muscle and joint aches an acute emotional
distress are all side effects of depriving your body. Your
also putting your immune system at risk without it

receiving the proper vitamins and minerals to function properly. Not to mention, if you
diabetic, you‟re putting yourself at risk of stroke and heart failure by playing with your
blood sugar levels so dangerously.
There are also areas of your body that ONLY run on blood glucose, which need to
be replenished through healthy eating. Your bran, nervous system and eyes, all get
fed by blood glucose. So, if you restrict or cut out completely carbohydrates then your
mind can feel foggy and your vision can get blurry.
So, just why do people do this to themselves?
We asked ourselves the same question while
creating SoCal Cleanse®. There are generally
two reasons given to try to support fasting.
First, you’re supposedly giving you digestive
system a break and second you’re supposedly
releasing toxins. While there might be a hair of
truth in both of those you‟re also setting up your
digestive system for further stress and any toxins
that are released are released too quickly and with
no real exit strategy, which leads the toxins right back to where they started from!

Now, doesn’t it make sense that if you’re trying to heal your body you need high
quality nutrients saturating your body? Think about exercise. After resistance
training or a long bike ride your muscles can become sore, this is partly due to the fact
that they have been damaged, micro-tears in your muscle. In order to heal that muscle
you need the proper nutrition the right balance of protein and carbohydrates, etc.
When your depriving your body of the essential vitamins, minerals, and
nutrients that your body needs in order to perform the millions of tasks it
performs on a daily basis you’re actually hampering its own abilities to
detoxify and heal!
Your cells and tissues need to be fed, not starved! Without other elements of proper
nutrition, like fiber, and other vitamins and nutrients, your digestive system will slow to a
crawl and even become further clogged, trapping any toxins that might have wanted out.
Isn’t this just the opposite of
what you were hoping to do?

Digestive health is an absolute key part of
detoxing! It needs to be running in tip-top shape in
order to move and eliminate and toxins that have been
stirred up in your system.
With fiber deprivation you’re body will not
eliminate toxins and instead try to unsuccessfully
process them again and once again store them in
your body.
It‟s true that your digestive health and function can be compromised by the wrong types
of foods. In fact, you might eat foods that you have mistakenly believed were good for
you only to damage your intestinal function even worse.

Mistake #2: Detoxing Too Quickly!
You’ve probably seen the ads. They populate late-night television, flashy magazines
and billboards. They sell a “weekend detox”, a “7 day detox”, a “two week cleanse”.
They promise quick results and lots of promises for a bargain basement prices. You‟d be
better off taking a match to your money, or eating it - that could be better for you than
some of these products out to make a quick buck and compromise your health at the
same time. We‟re sorry but this sort of thing drives us crazy!
You’ve spent a lifetime being exposed to toxic environments.
Years upon years of toxins getting lodged into your body and
now you’re supposed to detox and rid yourself of these toxins in
a weekend? Please! Not only is that wishful thinking but it’s
also dangerous thinking, let us tell you why.
Here’s a scary study done by our friends at the Environmental Working Group;
they studied umbilical cord blood of a group of newborn babies. They tested for 413
chemicals/toxins. The laboratory found 287 of these. Of these 287 chemicals, 180 of
them can cause cancer in humans and animals, 217 are known to be dangerous to the
nervous system and brain, and 208 can cause birth defects in animals.

Babies are being born with toxins already in their system, already at a
disadvantage. So, when we say you’ve spent a lifetime building up toxins we mean
it!
Detoxing and cleansing programs that are short term can be ineffective for multiple
reasons. First, detoxing really needs to be a lifestyle. And second, they can release
large numbers of toxins that flood into your blood stream which can cause extra stress on
your body, skin problems like acne, and worst of all you could experience negative affects
just to have the toxins get stored right back from where they came from because
the body can’t release and eliminate them fast enough!
Your lifestyle has everything to do with how
successful your detox and cleanse program
will be.
Study after study has proven that creating a real
change requires healthy habits. While we may know what
our bad habits/vices are we also know how hard it can be to
break them. It‟s also hard to form new habits. It requires
work and attention until it becomes a regular part of our

Mistake #3: Not Taking a Holistic Approach to
Detoxing!
You’ve just read that your lifestyle is a crucial element for your detoxifying and
cleansing ability. While SoCal Cleanse products will get you on your healthy detox path
it‟s important to know that these products are just one part of what you can be doing to
detox your body, mind, and life. There are changes, easy changes, that you can
make today that will help.
While we‟ll explain many of these here, please remember that you don‟t have to take all
of these changes on at once. Small changes lead to new habits and new habits lead to
long-term lifestyle changes!
Detoxing your mind can have powerful affects on your body. As we should all know
by now, stress has list of its own of all the negative impacts in can have on our bodies.
Stress can release toxic hormones and chemicals can be just as toxic to your body. Of
course stress can have many causes but it‟s important to set some time aside to really
analyze your life and examine where and when stress enters it.

It can be work related (anyone out there see the movie “Office Space”?) or it can come
from toxic relationships. The fact is, stress can come from every direction but it‟s how
you deal with it that counts.
Detoxing your mind is key to your overall health. Changing the way you think and
feel about yourself is a huge step to getting on the right track to overall health.
Ever have one of those days where everything goes wrong, your clothes feel tight,
your hair wouldn’t do a thing, your makeup is wearing off and it’s not even noon

This change can only happen within. It might take time but when it happens, your life
will change! Getting rid of toxic thoughts will change every second of every single day
for you. You‟ll feel happier in your own skin, more upbeat, and things will just magically

Here are some wonderful ways to help detoxify and clear your mind:
Meet with a life coach
Speak with a therapist
Meditate (guided meditations, a class, or quietly on your own are all great options)
Take a yoga class (trust me, “stuff” comes up in yoga!)
Take a break from TV, the Internet, and those gossip mags and spend time at the
beach or taking a long walk in nature to reconnect
Write in a journal
These things may sound simple but they are SO powerful!

Moving on… We love pizza and no matter what anyone says, there are some killer pizza
places in Los Angeles. So, yes, of course we eat pizza, we‟re only human! But we‟ve
also made some key dietary and lifestyle changes, over time, that has helped us
eliminate the majority of toxins from our bodies and our lives.
Allow us to share just a few of these changes with you because we know they will help.
USDA certified organic food. Much like our certified organic products, organic certified
food is truly a better option for you than non-organic.
Sure there have been the usual two-sides of the fence
studies about how different the nutritional content may be.
We, of course land on the side of the fence that say, yes,
organic foods do contain more nutrients but let‟s put
that aside for right now.
The bigger deal is the pesticides, herbicides and other
toxic chemicals used to grow non-organic foods.
Have you ever seen some of these farmers spraying their
crops in full hazmat gear? We have and it‟s scary!

They know the chemicals they’re spraying are incredibly dangerous. Many of the
chemicals end up in our bodies.
Some fruits and vegetables for example can absorb the chemicals through their skin
while others bond permanently to the skin. Remember these chemicals were meant to
kill living organisms! Think about it… if they kill bugs, what do you think they’re doing
to your body?!!
Do you remember DDT? A pesticide banned in the United States in the 1970‟s because
of all of the dangers linked to it? Well, it hasn‟t been banned in other countries!
Do you
know where we get many of the fruits and veggies that become out of season - other
countries that still use it! Buying organic might be slightly more expensive for some
items but this is your health we‟re talking here, don’t you think it’s worth it?
Move it!
Another great way to eliminate toxins is to incorporate some sort of exercise
movement routine in your lifestyle. Yoga is particularly beneficial in working the body
and organs in different positions that help move toxins out.
Any sort of exercise, cardiovascular or resistance training is imperative for a full detox
and cleanse program.
