S even years ago when I went to auction school and started LL Auctions, I had no idea all of the places that the auction business would take me. One thing that I love about my work is the wonderful people I meet, and the fact that no two days are ever the same. Recently in the span of two weeks, I spent one day in a 7000 sq. foot home up in the hills of Austin, TX, the same afternoon found me in a small condo picking up auction items and being told to be very careful, so as not to let the cat out. I had visions of myself running up and down a busy city street calling, “here kitty, kitty”. Thank goodness the cat cooperated and we got all of the auction items out of the house without any mishaps. Although I have to admit, I did check the trailer one last time before we left, just to be sure I wouldn’t find a “surprise” in it when we got to the warehouse. The next day found me lotting items from an old farmhouse in Round Top, TX, the wonderful old toys that had been packed away, comic books, postcards and two of my favorite items: some old glass bottles labeled Carmine Bottling Works and an old wooden Brown Cracker & Candy Co. box, marked Arthur Fricke, Carmine, TX. I thought I knew a lot about the history of Carmine, TX, but I have never met anyone who ever mentioned that Carmine, at one time, had a LL Auctions ★ PO Box 1371 ★ Dickinson, Texas 77539 bottling company. I guess I will have to question some of the long time residents that come to the auction and ask them what year those bottles were made. Hopefully that will solve the burning mystery for me. The next day found me and my dad back in Austin, to meet a couple from Houston. They had hired a moving company to store her aunt’s furniture. The big wooden crates were brought out by forklifts, as we anxiously awaited to see what would be inside. We tried not to get in the way of the movers as we sneaked a peek at what was being unwrapped. A Victorian secretary, a glass lighted curio cabinet and a wonderful long drop leaf table, all in fabulous condition. Dad and I loaded up the trailers and had time for lunch before heading back to the warehouse to finish lotting some inventory from an antique shop. We unpacked boxes for two days, finding vintage linens, hats, jewelry and glassware! I went back to the office for a few days. It was time to download all the fabulous pictures we took, do some research on some of the items and get them up on the catalog (continued on page 2) 713-248-6186 ★ www.texas-auctions.com 2 Oh, The Places We Go! (continued from page 1) list. Not to mention, my husband was glad I came home for a few days to spend some time with him The next week would be no less exciting as my husband John, and I drove across Houston to meet a gentleman that had flown in from PA to have us sell some of his dad’s art collection. You will see some of this art in Carmine and some in the next couple of on-line auctions. What a nice gentleman; the artwork was incredible and he was pleased to have found us through the internet and have us handle his auction. The next day was very tough. I had met with a lady in San Leon a few months ago. Keep in mind the homes on the bay in San Leon are up on stilts. She had a few boxes of some treasures in the second story of her home and the entire bottom portion full of boxes that were already packed up for auction. We had planned to pick those items up several weeks before, however she had a death in the family and we had to postpone the pick up. We were set to pick up her items, but Hurricane Ike had other plans. When we got back to our home and were able to contact her, the news was not good. Only the boxes on the second floor of the house survived. I arrived to find that she was not home. A quick phone call revealed that she was on her way and she told me I should go up to the balcony and start carrying the boxes down. I couldn’t help but ask, “Is anyone going to shoot me?” I had noticed, as I drove through the area that there were many, “you loot, we shoot” signs and I certainly didn’t want anyone to think that Fall 2008 I was stealing her belongings. She assured me it was ok and I apprehensively went up the wobbly stairs to tote down her boxes. It was very sad to go into that area and see the devastation. The home next to hers had only a slab remaining and the home on the other side looked fine, until she told me the wall I was seeing was all that remained. The rest of the house wasn’t there. She said she was finding her belongings up to six blocks away. The next couple of days were spent mostly looking through a jeweler’s loop. I had brought back all of the boxes with me that had jewelry in them, and had Barbara unpacking and sorting through them. I examined all of the jewelry items, lotted them and wondered who would be going home with such great items. I love jewelry, not just the real gold and LL Auctions ★ PO Box 1371 ★ Dickinson, Texas 77539 diamonds, but the fabulous costume jewelry that takes me to a bygone era I wish I could step in to. The next weekend I had storage unit auctions, to conduct, those are always interesting. It’s strange to “peek” inside other people’s storage units and see some of the items people pay to store. I have to admit; sometimes I don’t know why people choose to keep some of the things that they do, but then again, I don’t know why I hang onto some of the silly things I have either. That same evening it was off to a charity benefit auction. I was working as part of the ringcrew. When most people think of charity benefit galas, they think of great food and fun. For the auction crew, you have the responsibility of being the main fundraiser for the night. Many charity organizations rely on this one big night to raise most of their funding for the entire year. There is a lot of pressure to surpass the previous year’s total and leave them happily adding up their donations. However, the auction company has no control over the items, and sometimes the items fall a bit short of big donations. We were very blessed that night. They had great items and great bidders. We got the crowd into the swing of things, laughing and having a good time. The charity was thrilled and we were too. By then, it was getting late and I was too tired to eat the prime rib that we were offered. I just drove back to Giddings to stay with my mom and dad and catch a few z’s in the sleepy little town of Giddings, TX. As you can see, the auction industry can be a lot of work, but also a great deal of fun! Contact LL Auctions today to have an exciting, entertaining and successful auction event! Oh, The Places We Go! (continued from page 2) I feel that I have the world’s greatest job. We work hard to show everyone’s items in the best light possible. We merchandise, advertise and clean the items, so that they are ready for the new homes they will go into. It was very rewarding recently when a seller said, “I can’t believe you sold it for that much money, I would have put it in a garage sale, priced it for $1.00 and thought I was doing good to get that”. I know that someday when I am gone, my items will have lot stickers on them and be carted off to be loved by new owners. It’s a great feeling to see people so happy over what they have purchased at auction. I think it’s also comforting for the family to know that the items they couldn’t keep, or didn’t have room for are being treasured and lives are blessed by them. We at LL Auctions hope that you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and blessed New Year! No one can really predict who will show up at an auction, and what people will desire to buy. We try to explain to our sellers that some items may bring much less then they had hoped for, while others items bring a much larger sum of money than they would have expected. This page is just a small sample of some of our recent past prices realized. As you can see, prices are unpredictable, but then again, isn’t that what makes going to an auction so much fun!
