√
WHAT ARE STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELS (SIPS)?
SIPs are a high performance building system for all types of construction. The panels consist of a structural foam (insulating) core bonded between two
structural skins. Enercept SIPs typically use expanded polystyrene (EPS) for the insulating core and oriented strand board (OSB) for the exterior and
interior skins. SIPs are manufactured under factory-controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a costeffective structure that is energy efficient and 2 1/2-times stronger than stick-built.
√
HOW DOES THE COST OF A SIPS STRUCTURE COMPARE TO STICK-BUILT?
When factoring in material cost, labor expense, job site waste and the lifetime benefit of energy savings, the Enercept system is the lowest cost building
solution.
√
DO ENERCEPT PANELS CONTAIN UREA-FORMALDEHYDE (UF) OR
CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS (CFC’S)?
No. Enercept SIPs were tested at the University of South Dakota; no traces of UF were detected. The panels do not contain CFCs and do not produce
off-gassing of dangerous chemicals.
√
WHAT IS THE R-VALUE OF ENERCEPT PANELS?
There are three methods of heat transfer: convection, conduction and radiation. R-value is the measure of resistance to heat loss by conduction only.
The most important factor in thermal efficiency is the continuity of the insulation. The Enercept system results in a solid envelope of insulation where
even the connecting posts have a foam core.* The Enercept system has the ability to resist heat transfer by both conduction and convection (air
movement). Based on this information, a conventional stick-built home would require a R-40 wall to compete with a 6-inch Enercept wall (R-24).
√
IS AN ENERCEPT ROOF VENTED?
A ventilated roof is not necessary in most climates – as once thought. Model codes allow both vented (cold roof) and unvented (hot roof) roof
assemblies. Because SIPs roofs are insulated, conductive heat loss is avoided - negating the problems usually associated with an unvented roof. If the
roof must be ventilated, 2x strips can be attached to the roof and then covered with sheathing to form a vented layer over the panels.
√
HOW IS AN ENERCEPT STRUCTURE WIRED?
Enercept was the first company to patent factory-installed electrical chases. Chases are usually marked on the interior sheathing of the panels for easy
identification. Enercept roof panels are typically pre-wired in the factory per customer specifications. Simply drill access holes through the sill and top
plates for access to the electrical chases. A comprehensive electrical guide is available.
√
DO ENERCEPT HOMES HAVE MOISTURE PROBLEMS?
Enercept structures are very airtight compared to other building methods. Generally a moisture barrier, like house wrap, is applied to the exterior of
the structure. Seam tape is provided for all interior panel connections and the use of an air exchanger is recommended. These measures will protect
the home from moisture and will create exceptional indoor air quality.
√
IS THE ENERCEPT SYSTEM CODE APPROVED AND WARRANTED?
The Enercept building system has been accepted for use by HUD and is ICC/ICBO approved. Enercept SIPs have been third-party tested by
independent testing agencies - RADCO and NTA, Inc. Enercept offers a limited lifetime warranty (copies available upon request).

Looking for a spacious vaulted ceiling?
I-Joist Connection
The Enercept structural roof system offers the choice of an insulated attic space or
vaulted ceilings that will create the impression of more living space with the
option of including a loft area.
SIPs can be made to a maximum of 8-feet wide and 24-feet long. A panel this
large can cover a lot of area quickly. A SIPs roof thickness of 14 -inches will
provide optimal protection from summer heat and winter cold.
A structural I-Joist connector is factory installed at each splice for easier
construction.
For easier assembly, roof panels are pre-wired according to customer
specifications.

ENERCEPT BASEMENT PANELS
Enercept offers two types of below-grade SIPs:

Basement

Foundation
The Enercept basement system creates an insulated environment perfect for additional living
space. A solid core of 7-1/4” EPS insulation
prevents the cold from creeping into the
conditioned space. The result is a warm, dry
basement with the feel of main floor comfort.
The typical basement panel is comprised of
7-1/4” EPS insulation with 1/2” treated plywood
exterior sheathing and 7/16” OSB interior
sheathing. Green treated 2x8 lumber is placed
12” on center. Panels are connected by a
preinstalled 2x8 which fits into the recessed edge
of the adjoining panel. Sealant (supplied by
Enercept) is applied at the time of construction
to the bottom sill plate and between panels.
Vertical electrical chases are factory routed in
each panel. All window openings are precut and
framed by Enercept.
The
prebuilt
nature of
the
Enercept
basement
system
allows for
fast construction and eliminates the need to
fur-out the walls.

FOUNDATION PANELS
The EPS insulation in the Enercept foundation system protects
plumbing from freezing in cold climates.
Accessories for both systems include:
•Treated 2x bottom plate
•Sealant
•Double 2x top plate
•Optional rubber membrane
•Window framing anchors (basements)
Enercept foundation panels contain 5-5/8” or 7-3/8” EPS
insulation laminated between 1/2” treated plywood sheathing.
Green treated 2x lumber is placed 16” on center. Panels are
connected by a preinstalled 2x that fits into the recessed
edge of the adjoining panel.
Typical foundation panel height is 4’ unless otherwise specified.
To achieve the same thermal efficiency as an Enercept foundation
panel, a concrete wall would have to be at least 12’ thick!

HERS and Energy Star®
WHAT IS A HOME ENERGY RATING SYSTEM (HERS)?
A HERS Rating is an official analysis of a home’s energy performance. The process involves an analysis of a home’s construction plans and on-site inspections. Included are an assessment of building components, performance testing (Blower
Door & Duct Blaster tests) and energy modeling with accredited software and a HERS Report.
WHAT IS THE HERS INDEX?
The HERS Index is the official number that comes from the rating. The scoring system was established by the Residential
Energy Services Network (RESNET). The scoring system compares the home being tested to a HERS Reference Home
which has a HERS Index of 100 (based on 2006 International Energy Conservation Code). A home with a HERS Index of
85 is 15% more energy efficient and qualifies for the Energy Star Label. Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index is equal
to a 1% reduction in energy consumption. A Net-Zero energy home will have a HERS Index of zero.
