Welcome to Summer Camp!
Welcome to Summer Camp! We are excited that you’re going to be a part of Woodward Copper this summer! Please read this Registration Packet to learn everything you need to know about summer camp. GETTING TO WOODWARD COPPER Arrival Day is the first date listed for each session. This is the day campers either fly or drive to camp. For ALL campers, check-in is between 12:00pm and 4:00pm. We request that all campers check-in by 3:45pm at the latest. This will ensure campers have enough time to settle into their dorm rooms before dinner, camp orientation, and skills testing. Check In Once at Copper Mountain, all summer campers (both With Lodging or Without Lodging Campers) will need to check in at The E.D.G.E., which is our camper housing location. Follow the Check-In signs and take Copper Rd. past two stop sign intersections. After the second intersection you will want to park in the Beeler parking lot on your right before the roundabout. The E.D.G.E. building will be located across the street, and Summer Camp check in will take place in the lobby. At check-in, campers will receive their room assignments, meet their counselor and roommate, sign up for camp activities, deposit cash in their “Camp Bank” or “Camp Store Credit Card Account,” as well as get their picture taken for their Camper Credential. Departure Day is the last date listed for each session. This is the day campers either fly home or get picked up at camp. All camp sessions wrap up after breakfast at 9:00am from The E.D.G.E. lobby. Campers will be permitted to leave only with their own parent(s), unless prior arrangements are made. Exceptions can be made if parents/legal guardians provide written permission for their child to leave with someone else (see Transportation Form). Getting to Camp All campers MUST fill out the enclosed Transportation Form so we know how you will arrive at Copper Mountain for camp check-in, as well as depart on check out day. Flying A Woodward Copper employee in uniform will be stationed at DIA (Denver International Airport) on Arrival and Departure days. They will be available to meet campers at the arrival/baggage terminal, ensure that they get on the correct Summit Express shuttle, or checkin at the right airline. o On Arrival Day, all campers should try to arrive at DIA as close to between 11:00am and 1:00pm as possible. The Woodward Copper employee will only be stationed at DIA from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Please meet the counselor at the statue pictured to the right as soon as you deplane. o On Departure Day, all departure flights should try to be scheduled no later than 1:00pm. The Woodward Copper employees will only be stationed at DIA from 11:00am to 2:00pm. You MUST arrange an AIRPORT SHUTTLE in advance through Summit Express for transportation from Denver International Airport to Copper Mountain and from Copper Mountain to Denver International Airport. Please note that Woodward Copper is not responsible for booking your shuttle. o *To reserve your shuttle contact Summit Express at 1-855-686-8267. Please mention that you will be traveling to/ from Woodward Copper. For more information checkout their website at www.SummitExpress.com We recommend traveling with a passport for an I.D., but this form of ID is not required. Unaccompanied Minors: Some airlines require passengers that are below a certain age to fly as an unaccompanied minor. There is usually an extra fee for this because the airline provides a representative on-board the flight, and allows a representative to accompany the minor to and from the gates during travel. Please check with your airline when booking the camper’s flights. If you have purchased this service please note this information on the Transportation Form. Driving Directions from Denver. CONTACTING CAMPERS (for campers under the age of 18) We recommend that campers arrive with a phone card or cell phone. We encourage campers to call home during the afternoon of the second day, as we have found this helps to prevent homesickness. Please keep conversations upbeat and positive by focusing on coaching sessions and recreational activities. In the event of an emergency, Woodward Copper Summer Camp may be reached on the following phone numbers: Hours: E.D.G.E. Housing office 970-968-2318 x 60824 May 4 – June 6 Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm June 7 – July 30 Sunday through Friday 8am – 9pm Saturday 9am – 5pm A Woodward Copper staff will relay your message as soon as possible. When writing a camper, use the following address: Camper’s Name, Room #_____ Woodward Copper PO Box 3001 Copper Mountain, CO 80443 When shipping a package via FedEx or UPS, use the following address: Camper’s Name, Room #______ The E.D.G.E. – Woodward Copper 50 Beeler Place POB 3001 Copper Mountain, CO 80443-3001 *Please note that when sending a package it is a good idea to send express 2-3 day shipping to ensure your camper receives their package. Visiting Camp We enforce a strict “No Strangers” policy and ask that all visitors check in with our camp office, which is located in The E.D.G.E. prior to visiting a camper. We encourage Day Campers and family members of campers to stay at Copper Mountain, and offer special lodging rates when booking through reservations 888-350-1544. Recommended visiting hours are from 5pm to 9pm. Stay-over Campers We have special weekend instructional and recreational programs for campers staying multiple weeks. These include Barn sessions, and Copper Mountain recreational activities. Stay-over campers are subject to the Summer Camp Additional Day/Night fee of $149 per day or night. Be sure to plan for spending money as appropriate. *Please see the Summer Camp FAQ for further information. HOMESICKNESS (for campers under the age of 18) Many people, young and old, experience feelings of homesickness when faced with a new set of living conditions. Like many emotional expressions, homesickness is very contagious and must be recognized as such. Our staff is trained to handle these problems. Should a camper call and express feelings of homesickness, please notify us and we will work closely with you to alleviate the problem. Sleep-away camp offers an excellent opportunity for campers to learn how well they can manage without their parents and that other adults care about them. It has been our experience that it is more often the parents that are having a difficult time adjusting to their camper’s absence or overreacting to a camper’s early anxiety at being away from home. Check your own feelings about having a camper gone for an extended period of time. If you are not ready yourself, you may unwittingly make it difficult for your child to be away from you, consequently spurring feelings of guilt or feelings that he or she doesn’t have permission to enjoy himself or herself outside your view. Understandably, parents may feel helpless when they hear their child upset over the phone. Resist the urge to make promises about picking your child up or visiting. A visit from home interrupts their day, takes their attention from new friends and fun activities, and often spawns or exasperates homesickness. For more information on homesickness, we recommend reviewing Dr. Chris Thurber’s work at www.campspirit.com. SPENDING MONEY (for campers under the age of 18) Make sure to think about spending money prior to camp. Campers typically spend $50-$1,000 per week and sometimes more on snacks and souvenirs like Woodward t-shirts ($20-35), hats ($20-30), hoodies ($50-70), sunglasses ($10-$200), Create-A-Skate ($40), skate decks ($100-$150), and lots more. Remember if your camper is flying in and flying out make sure to set aside cash for baggage fees, unaccompanied minor fees, or prepay for these Airline services in advance. Cash Bank Account We have a safe and secure cash bank system set up at camp. Campers will be able to keep any cash he/she brings with them in our safe. We put the cash into an envelope and keep track of every withdrawal, as well as the camper’s bank total. The cash bank is deposited during camp check-in at the E.D.G.E. and is the best option for campers to have spending money good anywhere at Copper. Please be advised that campers will need a cash to use the EDGE Housing Vending Machines *There are onsite ATMs for cash withdrawal Camper Store Credit Campers also have the option of store credit that is valid at any Woodward Copper location; including Woodward Copper’s Camp Store, as well as several Copper owned retail outlets. Parents can set any maximum spend amount and enjoy the flexibility of being able to increase spending limits with a phone call. They can also rest easy as the remaining balance of the camper’s store credit will be refunded at the end of each camp week, or by August 2, 2015 at the latest.
