Mission Statement Based on Buddha's teaching of relief through mercy and compassion, the mission of the school is to implement moral and educational programmes based on Buddhist principles. Thus, the school aims to nurture the all-round development of students so that they develop a positive attitude towards life and become active, responsible and contributing members of society. 2. School Goals Upholding Buddha's teaching of relief through mercy and compassion and the school motto, ‘Realizing Buddha's Nature through Mind Enlightenment’, the school provides quality education for girls in New Territories West. The school emphasizes the holistic development and encompasses ethical, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and social development of each student. To meet the different needs of society and to cope with new challenges, students are provided with opportunities to develop multiple intelligences through the school curriculum and co-curricular activities. Our school endeavours to provide opportunities for students to develop their leadership. Our school was founded in 1973, and is now welcoming our 40th school anniversary. During the past thirty nine years, our students pursued excellence and got excellent results in both academic and non-academic areas. Since the 1990s, our students got five "Hong Kong Outstanding Students" awards, eight "New Territories Outstanding Students" awards and eighteen "Tuen Mun Outstanding Students" awards. In addition, many of our students were selected as leaders in the "Hong Kong 200 Leadership" project and awarded the "Grantham Scholarship", "Sir Edward Youde Scholarships" and the "Sir Robert Black Trust Fund - Scholarships ". They were also invited to join exchange tours to Britain, Germany, Singapore and Beijing as Hong Kong representatives. 1992-1993 Hong Kong Outstanding Student (Ho Sze Ki, currently serving in Princess Margaret Hospital as a Doctor) 2008-2009 Hong Kong Outstanding Student (Wong Nga Lai, studying in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Hong Kong) 1996-1997 New Territories Outstanding Student (Wat Chi Mei, serving in the American International Assurance as a Unit Manager, also a member of the Million Dollar Round Table) 2001-2002 Tuen Mun Outstanding Student (Chan Hiu Kwan, serving in Morgan Stanley Asia Limited as a Market Representative) 3 School Report In 2011-2012, F.3 Li Yuen Yung Ada was awarded the "Tuen Mun Outstanding Students Award" out of ten winners among all Tuen Mun secondary students. F.6 Suen Shui Yan, being one of the eight representatives of Hong Kong, won the Bronze Medal of the China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad for the second time. Good news also came from the first Hong Kong Diploma of Education (HKDSE) Examination. 73.1% of our F.6 students attained the entrance requirement of local universities degree courses, which is far above the rate for all Hong Kong candidates (36.4%). All these awards, honours and scholarships prove that not only do our students have an excellent academic performance, but they also have remarkable results in co-curricular activities, active participation as well as a service spirit. 3.5 New School Development Plan and Major Concerns A new three-year development cycle was started from September 2012. The School Development Committee carried out a survey on the implementation of the last development plan in April 2012. Then a review and discussion among teachers were held in May 2012. Finally, a new development plan was compiled in July 2012. The two major concerns in the new three-year development plan are "Enhancing Effective Learning" and "Nurturing Responsible Citizens". Discussion of the School Development Plan 3.6 Medium of Instruction Our school adopts English as the medium of instruction in teaching and learning. Summer Bridging Programme is offered to F.1 newly enrolled students to help them adapt to the English learning environment. The English Corner of our school provides a cosy and comfortable English learning environment for students. Various activities such as English reading scheme, story-telling competition and drama competitions are held to enhance students' proficiency in English. 4 School Report English Debate Competition with Diocesan Boys' School In November 2011, our English Department and English Association co-organized a Cultural Fortnight. The slogan of the activity was "Embrace Our World". Numerous activities including a National Costume Design Competition, Board Displays, Movie Shows, Radio Broadcast, French Class, Japanese Class, Food Stalls, Forum, Debate, a visit from a Singapore School, Stall Games and Variety Show were held to provide our students with opportunities to gain a wider and deeper understanding of different foreign cultures through the medium of English. Cultural Fortnight Organized by the English Department Nurturing the all-round development of students and producing bi-literate and tri-lingual professionals have long been our missions. Girls, in general, have a stronger language ability, thus performing well in speech events. Our school has a long tradition of participating actively in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and has been making every endeavour to explore and stretch our students’ potential in English speaking skills. Since the 1980’s, our outstanding achievements in speech events have gained us acclamation. Every year, more than 90% of the participants get over 80 marks and attain the Certificate of Merit. Our students also gained outstanding academic results in English Language. During the past six years, the passing rates in the HKCEE English Language and HKALE Use of English were 99% and 100% respectively. In the 2012 HKDSE Examination, our F.6 students also got a 100% pass. Besides English, our school also holds various activities in Cantonese and Putonghua in order to enhance students' ability in bi-literacy and tri-lingualism. We participate actively in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, inter-school debate competitions and other language activities. We also offer French and Japanese courses to enhance students' proficiency in other languages. 5 School Report Chinese Debate Competition Chinese Drama Performance 3.7 School Facilities Many school campus improvement projects were carried out and completed in the past few years. The following are some major projects completed in 2011-2012: The medical inspection room was moved to the 1st floor. The original medical inspections room, the store rooms in the library and the geography room were converted into three discussion rooms. An organic farm was built on the roof as a part of the "Sustainable Food Chain Programme" sponsored by HK Electric Clean Energy Fund Award Programme. The floor of the hall stage was replaced by beech. The improvement project is still in progress to provide a better learning environment for students. Achievements and Reflection on Major Concerns Major Concern 1 : Enhancing Students’ Academic Performance Target 1: Enhance Students’ Learning Skills Strategies / Tasks 1A Academic Interflow - To arrange at least two school visits for Mathematics and Chinese subjects to promote academic interflow for teachers. 1B Enhance Students’ Learning Skills Enable students to develop and practise study skills - identifying key words; - underlining text passages to locate main ideas; and - patterning notes so that they can learn how to study effectively. Enhance Students’ Self-confidence 1C - To prepare Students’ Appreciation Cards for teachers to encourage for those students who do good work academically. - To carry out the Academic Award Scheme to appreciate the Top 5 students in each subject in each class in Uniform Tests and Examinations. Evaluation There were visits from Woodlands Secondary School and Hong Kah Secondary School from Singapore in November 2011. Students from Diocesan Boys' School debated with our girls in the School Hall on 24/2/2012 and three of them had Economics and Chemistry lessons with our Form 5 students. In addition, officials from Zhe Jiang Province visited our school and shared with teachers and students in lessons. Some teachers have developed students' study skills by identifying key words, underlining text passages and patterning notes. This could be shown in the panel meeting reports. 1800 more appreciation cards have been used this year. In addition, student outstanding achievements were made known through school circulars, school pamphlets and the School Homepage. 8 School Report Target 2: Catering to Learning Diversity Strategies / Tasks 2A Gifted Education and Remedial Classes - About 20 elite students in each form from Forms 1 to 4 in the subjects of ELA, CLA and MAT are invited to join the gifted programmes offered by respective teachers to train them to be more elite. - About 20 academic low achievers of the above subjects in Forms 1 to 4 are chosen to join remedial classes arranged in the 10th period or on Saturdays offered by teachers or alumni. Evaluation According to the teachers’ observation and evaluation, the English & Mathematics Enrichment and Remedial programmes for F.1 to F.4 students were effectively run. For English Language classes, most students were benefited from the programmes. Some did make steady progress in their academic results while the participants of the Enrichment Programmes found some newly learnt skills and knowledge challenging. Our Learning and Teaching 5.1 Curriculum It has always been the tradition of our school to review and enrich the school-based curriculum in order to provide quality teaching and learning. Our school aims to achieve more than what we already have. We aim for a continuous and never-ending improvement. In the year 2011-2012, the following special programmes were implemented and the results are encouraging: The curriculum of Buddhist Studies has been revised and extended to include more issues about applying Buddhism to daily life. The subject is renamed as Buddhist Studies and Society. The curriculum of Home Economics is extended to include more knowledge and skills in health and daily life. The subject is renamed as Health and Living. Moral and civic education was introduced in F.1-3 form periods every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. School-based materials were prepared by the Moral and Civic Education Committee. The PATH (Path to Adulthood) Scheme, sponsored by the Jockey Club and co-organized with the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, helped to support students from F.1 to F.3 by providing them with various activities and learning materials. Starting from 2010-2011, a school-based support service from the EDB was offered to the Department of Mathematics of our school to develop a school-based curriculum for bridging lower form Mathematics learning. The support programme was extended to F.2 in 2012-2013. In addition to Mathematics, a school-based support service from the EDB was also offered to the Department of English Language in 2011-2012. Our teachers worked with professionals from tertiary institutions to enhance our teaching and learning effectiveness. Sex Education Course of the PATH Scheme Closing Ceremony and Prize Presentation of the PATH Scheme The following curriculum development has been implemented in 2012-2013: Moral and civic education was further enhanced in F.1-2. The lesson is conducted in a normal lesson per week to replace the original PATH lessons. English Literature is offered in two F.1 classes to stretch students with high ability in English and to broaden their horizons in western languages and cultures. 16 School Report Timetables in lower forms have been revised to allocate more teaching hours to humanity subjects and science subjects. 5.2 Overseas and Local Interflows Intercultural Exchange Programme Through the AFS Intercultural Exchange Programme, our school accepted two overseas exchange students in 2011-2012, Olafsdotiik Helga Kristin from Iceland and Reynders Goele from Belgium. They studied in our F.5 classes. Several parents of our students volunteered to host the exchange students and our school recommended two families to be the host families. Two F.3 students volunteered to be their host sisters. Through intercultural learning programmes, all students and teachers have the opportunity to acquire the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to contribute significantly to a culturally diverse and increasingly interdependent world. In April 2012, Kristin and Goele helped to organize a sharing session with AFS exchange students from other schools. Students coming from Iceland, Belgium, Russia, Italy, Argentina and Mexico introduced their countries to our students and played with us in the sharing session. The fruitful exchange programme is continued this year. Two students, one from Italy and one from Brazil are now studying in our school. Interflow is always emphasized in our school to broaden the horizons of students. The following table shows the major interflows in 2011-2012. 17 School Report Month Activity Sept – Nov An inter-school drawing competition among primary and secondary schools in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long was held by our school. An art exhibition was held at the Tuen Mun Town Hall from 10 to 11 November 2011 to display drawings of the winners. Art work, both 2D and 3D, created by our students and the Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery were also displayed in the exhibition. Nov The 34th Speech Day cum Prize Presentation was held at Tuen Mun Town Hall. Students from St. Catharine's School For Girls (Kwun Tong) were invited to perform in our ceremony. Nov Teachers and students of the Woodlands Secondary School and Hong Kah Secondary School from Singapore visited our school again. Nov Dr. Leung Yat Ming together with leaders, principals and teachers of the Luqiao Experimental Middle School ( ) and the Education Bureau from Taizhou, Zhe Jiang Province ( ) and professor from the Zhejiang Normal University ( ) visited our school. Nov Our school participated in a project organized by the EDB aiming to establish a one-to-one close relationship among schools in Hong Kong and Sichuan province. Mr. Mak Tim Ming, our Principal, joined a visit tour to Chengdu, Sichuan ( ) and signed with our sister school, Chengdu Zongbei Middle School ( ). Feb One teacher and six students from Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) joined a half-day programme in our school. They joined two different lessons with our F.5 students. An English debate competition between the two schools was held. Feb The 4th "Kam Lung Cup" Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Primary Schools Quiz Competition was held. Nearly 200 students from 24 primary schools participated in the competition. Feb 40 students in F.3 and F.5 participated in a 4-day education tour to Chaozhou, Guangdong. April Ko Ka Lo of F.5 and our teacher Mr. K. K. Li was selected by the EDB to participate in a 7-day exchange tour to Beijing. April "Miu Fat Cup" Inter-school Buddhist Speech Contest was held. 21 teams from 11 schools participated in the competition. June The 3rd Joint Schools' Famine, co-organized by our school and St. Louis School was held in our school. Over 200 students from these two schools and Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College participated in this charity activity. July The "Forward with Pride to 40th Anniversary" School Concert was held at Yuen Long Theatre. The Chinese University Chorus and Belilios Public School String Orchestra were invited to perform in the concert. July 45 students from F.2 to F.5 participated in a 14-day excursion to Liverpool, England. July Ko Ka Lo of F.5 joined a 7-day exchange camp with student leaders from Beijing and Macau. July 10 students in F.4 participated in a 5-day education tour to Nanchang, Jiangxi. July 10 students from F.2 to F.4 participated in a 5-day education tour to Nanning, Guangxi. The Art Exhibition was officiated by Dr. Chan Man Hung and our Supervisor, Reverend Sik Sau Chi. Our students shared with students of Hong Kah Secondary School from Singapore. Our students held a discussion with students of Woodlands Secondary School from Singapore. Our students, including the AFS exchange students, shared with students from Diocesan Boys' School. The 4th Kam Lung Cup Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Primary Schools Quiz Competition Education Tour to Chaozhou, Guangdong Exchange Tour to Beijing 19 School Report Students from 11 Buddhist Schools participated in the Joint Schools' Buddhist Speech Contest. The 3rd Joint Schools' Famine was co-organized with St. Louis School and joined by Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College. The "Forward with Pride to 40th Anniversary" School Concert was held at Yuen Long Theatre. Study Tour to Liverpool, England Exchange Tour to Nanning, Guangxi Exchange Camp with Students from Beijing and Macau The signing ceremony of the exchange projects between secondary schools of Hong Kong and Sichuan was held in Chengdu. 20 School Report 5.3 Whole School Approach to Catering for Student Diversity For high academic achievers, tailor-made and free English Language and Mathematics training courses taught by our teachers and outstanding alumnae are provided after school, on Saturdays and during long school holidays in order to enhance students’ capabilities in the two subjects. Our school also encourages students to participate in a variety of competitions and international examinations so as to broaden their horizon and boost their confidence. Furthermore, our school promotes gifted education by nominating students to attend training and courses offered by The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education. In 2011-2012, 15 students were admitted to attend activities and programmes offered by the Academy in the domains of Humanities, Leadership, Mathematics and Science. Suen Shui Yan of 6F, being a member of the Hong Kong Girls Mathematics Team, has won the bronze medal of Chinese Girls' Mathematical Olympiad for the 2nd time after attending training offered by the Academy. For weaker students, small-class teaching is implemented in Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics and Liberal Studies from F.1 to F.5 in order to help students. F.1 to F.4 English Language and Mathematics remedial classes, which are taught by our teachers or outstanding alumnae studying at universities, are offered to facilitate students’ learning. Re-tests and re-examinations were conducted in 2011-2012 to assist and motivate weaker students to catch up with the learning progress. 5.4 New Senior Secondary Academic Structure For the NSS academic structure, we offered a total of 13 elective subjects for students to choose from. In addition, 6 classes in each form from F.4 to F.6 are offered with our resources in order to enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching. Plenty of resources have also been spent for the first HKDSE examination in 2012. Teaches have attended various training courses to enhance the teaching and assessment of the HKDSE subjects. Plenty of tutorial lessons were held after school, during Saturdays and school holidays. Over forty days of tutorial lessons were held after the Yearly Examination and up to the end of the summer vacation. In order to prepare our students well for the HKDSE examination, our school also participated in a joint-school HKDSE pre-mock programme and an exchange programme of mock papers with other schools. Many of our teachers worked as markers for the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) in the HKDSE examination. They are more familiar with the requirements of the examination via the marking process and sharing sessions with colleagues of the HKEAA and teachers from other schools. Applied learning is also an important component of the NSS. In 2011-2012, our school continued to subsidize 10 senior form students to join Applied Learning courses offered by tertiary institutions. Through experiencing diversified Applied Learning courses, they have developed their positive values and attitudes and gained workplace knowledge and skills in order to face the challenges of different occupations. Besides, students’ horizons are broadened and their knowledge is enriched through moral and civic education, community services, aesthetic and music activities. All these programmes are conducive to students’ whole-person development. 21 School Report 22 School Report 6. Support for Student Development 6.1 Moral and Civic Education Students line up in the playground on Tuesdays (F.1-3) and Thursdays (F.4-7). The session "A moment with …" was extended to students so that they could share learning skills, responses to social issues or experiences in their life with their schoolmates. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, moral and civic education was conducted in form periods. 6.2 Guidance for F.1 Students In order to help Form 1 students to adapt to their secondary school life, our school arranged the following activities in 2011-2012: Activity Aim English Bridging Course Orientation Day for Students and Parents A Date with M & M @M An introduction to music activities and mathematics activities of our school was held in August. School Days for Early Adaption F.1 students attended two normal school days at the end of August so that they can adapt to secondary school life at an earlier time. After School Homework Tutorial Parents' Sharing Sessions Class teachers and subject teachers of F.1 provided support to students' homework after school in the first two weeks. Tutorial Classes Peer Counselling Scheme After-school Remedial Class Life Camp Organized by the PTA in the summer vacation and aims at enhancing students’ ability to learn in English. Promote students and parents a better understanding of the school before the start of the school year by introducing the school life to students and parents. Parents discuss learning problems of their daughters with F. 1 class teachers. Organized by the PTA, conducted by senior form students and aims at helping junior form students to progress in their learning. Counselling service is provided by senior form guidance prefects. Teachers of our school help low achievers by adopting after school small class teaching. A three-day life camp for F.1 students was held in September 2011 so that they can be more familiar with each other and easily adapt to life in secondary school. A buddy scheme has been implemented in 2012-2013 with the participation of all teachers. Each teacher takes care of two to three F.1 students and gives advice to them. Orientation Day for F.1 Parents and Students A Date with M & M @ M 23 School Report 6.3 Enhanced Support for Students on Further Education and Career Guidance The Career Guidance Committee organized numerous talks, visits and job shadowing programmes for F.6 and F.7 students to assist them with planning their future after graduation. In addition to guidance on local education, we also provided guidance on overseas education in order to support students in the pursuit of studies. Talks on education in Taiwan and Canada were held in 2011-2012. A mentorship scheme for F.5 students was also launched in 2012-2013. The scheme was supported by alumnae of our school from various sectors. They shared their study and career experience with our students to help them plan their tertiary education and careers path at an earlier stage. Besides guidance services for graduates, our school also held talks and sharing sessions for F.3 students and parents to help with the selection of NSS subjects. The guidance service was extended to include F.2 students since 2011-2012. The career guidance service is further enhanced in 2012-2013 with more resources allocated. Student Performance 7.1 Academic Performance 2012 was the last year for the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), and our school's result was far above the average standard. The best result was A A A B C. 9 subjects, including Use of English and Chinese Language & Culture attained a passing rate of 100%. 86.4% of F.7 graduates attained the admission requirement of local universities degree courses, which is far above the rate of all candidates in Hong Kong (46.2%). 2012 is also the first year for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination. Our students also got encouraging and excellent results. The best result was 5** 5** 5* 5* 5* 5*. 73.1% of our F.6 students attained the admission requirement of local universities degree courses, which is also far above the rate for all candidates in Hong Kong (36.4%). Teachers are of the opinion that the NET teacher performed well in helping students to build a strong foundation in English Language and excel in examinations. The proficiency in English helps students to learn better in other subjects. 2. Senior form students showed proficiency and fluency in Oral English examination 1. The I.T technician was always ready to provide supporting service to teachers regarding the use of I.T and A.V. equipments as well as the preparation of teaching aids. 2. The I.T. Assistant was in charge of the operation and the maintenance of the Campus TV as well as the preparation of TV programmes. His performance won the praises of teachers Employment of an I.T. Assistant To employ a teacher assistant (I.T.) for the following purposes: 1. To ensure an efficient and effective use of the MMLC. 2. To help teachers to prepare teaching materials.
