95th Annual Cape Breton County
Exhibition Slated To Begin On
August 15th In North Sydney
The final touches have been made to the Exhibition Grounds,
the events, animals, produce are ready and all we need now
is some good weather to get the 95th Cape Breton County
Farmers Exhibition underway.
The Exhibition was started to focus awareness on agriculture and the role it plays in the Cape Breton economy and
workplace. Many changes inf farming have taken place over
the past 95 years but the dedication and determination of Cape
Breton’s farmers has not changed at all.
Technology has certainly changed the face of the farm over
the past 100 years. But it still takes the skill, knowledge and
hard work to make a farm viable today.
For many families, the Exhibition is a place to show their
skills in horsemanship, cattle and with the produce and products they have labored so long to bring to market.
This year’s lineup is quite extensive and there is something
here to please most tastes. The highlights of the Exhibition will
be featured in this issue but there are two special items I’d like
to bring to your attention.
Two young ladies, Breagh Ross and Morgan Reid will take
center stage and perform scenes from Anne of Green Gables.
This theatrical production will also interact with the young people
at the Ex. You will remember the character Anne from the Green
Gables tales as living on a working farm.
The second item I’d like to draw your attention to is the “With
These Hands Cookbook” which will be sold at the EX this
year. It is a compilation of many Cape Breton foods as they
have been prepared by the farmers and their spouses. Get a
copy before they are all sold out! You’ll be glad you did.
See Inside Pages for a Comprehensive look at the
Events and entertainment at this year’s 95th
Cape Breton County Farmers Exhibition

I hope you were able to catch
some of the many events of the
Johnny Miles Festival. There
was a lot of organizing going
on and always at the heart of
any major event like this festival are the planning staff and
volunteers who make these
events happpen every year.
This year for all outdoor festivals in Cape Breton were at the
mercy of the weather and it
was the greatest challenge facing the event organizers. Hats
off to you for making this festival happen every year.;; I’d
like to pass along our thanks
to the enertainers who provided
music for our KLEE. The attendance was dismal but the performers donated their talent
and time for 4 hours of music.
Thanks to Bill Connal, Ernie
Wells, Mike Wadden, Paul
Campbell
and
Craig
Popovich... Thank you all for
your help and your donation of
your time and talents ...We
were out to Louisbourg jigging
makerel but the catch is down
in numbers and size but on the
plus side the pollock are in
and are a good size ... I was
talking with Jerry Holland Jr.
and he’s now back in the area
on Seaview drive and will be
contributing to Northside This
Week in the coming issues...
If you’re looking for some good
food, fun and music, stop by
Rollie’s Wharf on Thursday
evenings for their Celtic Music night. I was there on
Thursday and there were 5 fiddlers, 1 piano players and several guitar players. The blend
of music was terrific and the atmosphere was contagious.
Come early to get a good seat
as the place was “jammed to
the rafters.” ... I also attended
the Open Mike Night at the
North Sydney Firemans Hall.
Tammy suggested I come and
see the talent. I was genuinely
surprised by the variety and
number of performers. The
place was packed and Ernie
Wells and friends provided the
musical backdrop for the entertainers. There was lots of
dancing, the kitchen was
working full time to keep up
with the orders and everyone
was having a great time. Go
and see for yourself on Thursday evenings when it’s Open
Mike Night at the Firemens
Hall ... Ernie Wells has two
musical CDs availabe and I
was listening to them all weekend - look for Golden Oldies
CD whenever Ernie is performing ... We were able to secure
some merchandise such as
shirts and hats from Bartown
Days and Johnny MIles Festival courtesy of Emily Gray at
Northside Receation Dept. and
Kim Rideout from the Johnny
Miles Festival. We have a little
“Treasure Hunt” in this issue
and you can win these giveaways by fiding the Pirate Hat
in one of our advertiser’s ad in

Mines is in his final phase of training for the World Powerlifting
Competition slated for Moosejaw
in September. His father, and
trainer, Wayne MacDonald, says
that the final weeks of training are
progressing on schedule and
Adam is somewhat “anxious” as
the deadline for the competition
nears.
The 16 year old Sydney Mines
native secured his spot on Team
Canada in April taking a Gold
Medal in the National Canadian
Powerlifting Competition held in
Prince Edward Island.

Singer/songwriter Carmel
Mikol released her new album
Creature with an accompanying book this week and celebrates with two release
shows in Nova Scotia.
Recorded live off the floor
at Cape Breton’s award-winning Lakewind Sound Studio,
Creature is an Americanatinged confluence of acoustic
guitars, mandolin, banjo, and
unaffected vocals.
The eight song recording is

Local Actresses To
Mike Wadden To
Highlight Upcoming Play Friday At The
C. B. Exhibiton Stage
There will be something a
litle different at this year’s Exhibition in North Sydney.
Breagh Ross and Morgan
Reid will take center stage and
perform scenes from Anne of
Green Gables.
The two actresses enjoy
musical productions and the
character Anne seems to resonate with them. They will be
enjoying performing for the
audience and also include
young audience members in
their show.
The character Anne lived on
a farm and Breagh and Morgan want to bring her spirit and
enthusiasm for life alive on the
stage.
Maureen Murphy, Exhibition
Facilities Manager said that in
the past they’ve had costumed
characters at the Exhibition but
not in a dramatic performance
like Breagh and Morgan are
planning to perform.

With the sport season well underway, we’d thought you’d
might like to hear some sport jokes. Here’s three from the
Cape Breton Joke Book.
The young substitute teacher was trying her best to teach
the kids at East Bay Elementary the basics of geography.
“Does anyone know where Toronto is?” asked the substitute.
Young Daryl answered quickly, “I think they’re in Philadelphia for a doubleheader.”

At a recent slow pitch ball banquet one of the
players received the Michael Jackson Award. He walked
up to the stage and pictures were taken. When he returned beaming to his seat, his wife asked him what the
trophy was for.
The player looked at it and read the inscription, “Like
Michael Jackson, this player wears a glove on one hand
for no apparent reason.”
A woman softball fan in
New

screaming at the umpire all
through the game. Around
the 5th innning she went up
to the screen and hollered,
“If you were my husband, I’d
poison you!”

The 9th Annual Johnny Miles Festival was a huge success.
During the 5 day festival record numbers attended numerous
events held for all ages.
The premier event of the festival, the 23rd Johnny Miles Memorial 5K Road Race saw 112 participants taking part. Runners from as far away as Florida as well as British Columbia
and Ontario took part. The overall winner of the race was Chris
Milburn, who crossed the finish line with a time of 17:58:98.
The top female was Rachyl MacPhail with a time of 20:02:19.
New events added to the festival this year such as the Giant
Soap Box Derby and the Jail N Bail proved very popular. Festival favorites such as Kids Fest, featuring Serpentime Reptile
Zoo and the Seniors Luncheon with entertainment by Helen
MacDonald and Friends, Eddie and Daniel MacDonald and Troy
Young continued in popularity and were a great success.
Sunday night say the festival end on a high note with the
closing concert. The Johnny Miles Festival Rising Stars, The
Company, and Main Stage Performance by the Andrew Doyle
Band once again saw record numbers and was enjoyed by all.
Finally the festival went out with a bang with an amazing 3D
Fireworks Display by Fireworks FX.
It was definitely a week to remember and plans are already
underway for next year when the Johnny Miles Festival will
celebrate its 10th Anniversary.

you together made this festival the success that it was. We
would also like to thank all of those who attended the many
events. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. We
look forward to next year.
