JW Farquhar 803-517-0451 4 Charleston CHARLESTON AMATEUR GOLF TOUR City of Charleston Parent-Child Championship Charleston SC - Kyle and John Peters shot 68 to capture the 1315 division of the City of Charleston Parent-Child Championship. Played over the Charleston City Golf Course, The Peters shot 32 on the back nine, including a string of 3 straight birdies on 15, 16, and 17, to card the low round of the Championship. The Sons 20-29 flight saw outstanding play, with 3 teams shooting under par. Kevin and Stan Smuniewski’s 69 bested the 71’s shot by the Peper’s (Mark and Warren) and the Thompson’s (Charles and Charles III) Tye Beasenburg and Ty Cline continue their masterful team play with a 71. They moved up an age bracket from 2005, however, the results did not change. Facing stiffer competition in the form of Justin and Cantey Hare, Beasenburg and Cline’s 34 on the back nine won the playoff. The format for the competition was Chapman Scotch. (The partners both drive from each tee, and then each plays a second shot with the other’s ball. After the second shots, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed, alternate shots being continued until the ball is holed.) A record 48 teams of Parent – Child or Grandparent-Grandchild competed in the 2006 Championship. The teams were broken into 17 flights based on the age and gender. Please see www.charlestoncity.inof/golf for complete results. For those that are interested, the 2007 City of Charleston Golf Championship schedule has been posted on-line as well. Charleston SC - The Charleston division of THE AMATEUR GOLF TOUR at the Wild Dunes Golf & Tennis Resort. Wild Dunes Resort was named the Best in State Resort by Golf Digest in 1997. The Harbor Course, which winds along the Inter-costal Waterway proved to be both challenging and treacherous. The Tom Fazio design has lots of water and some very long par 4s. Nearly 1/3 of the tournament players triple bogeyed the first hole. The course staff was an excellent host for this event and is looking forward to our return to their Links Course on February 17th. The weather was cool with temperatures in the low 60’s with moderate winds. The tournament played in just over 4 ¾ hours and the pace of play was excellent. One cart problem caused a short delay in play, but was resolved quickly. David Ferris of Summerville, SC won the Championship Flight with a score of 74. Matt Metz scored a 78 for second, with Michael Assey right behind for third. Jace Gause of Goose Creek, SC shot an 83 to take “A” Flight honors over Walt Wysk of Myrtle Beach. A ball can fly in one of nine different ways (for purposes of this tip we’ll not add in the consideration of trajectories). Balls can fly in three directions; straight, left, and right. It can also curve either left or right going in any of the three directions, thus the total of nine. Tim Tang The direction in which a ball flies is controlled by the path of the club through space and of course that is created by the direction of arm swing. As for the curve, well that is solely determined by the angle at which the club face is pointing at the moment of impact and how it relates to the club’s path. I.E., an out to in path with a club face open to that path leads to the dreaded start left curving right shot, THE SLICE! Dustin Swinging square and straight will produce straight non curving shots, swinging in to out or out to in with the club face square to that path will produce straight right or left shots. How one holds the club in their hands is directly correlated to how the club head will react that is why strong or motorcycled lead hand grips lead to left curving shots as the club head is turning toe toward the golfer after impact, weak lead hands lead to the opposite. So much attention is given in lessons to creating proper swinging motion, but all that REALLY matters is the direction in which one’s arms move and the relationship of the face to that direction, the ball doesn’t know if you’re swinging in a phone booth or if your lead knee leads you into proper impact positioning. The next time you practice go out there with the information above and see how easy it is to begin to change directions and create or limit curves in shots. There is no one mechanical motion which is the silver bullet, we’re all different and therefore how could we all swing the way “x” golfer does, all we have to do is pay attention to the ball’s flight and make changes given the knowledge of ball flight laws to get the desired golf shot direction and shape. Heck! the ball is yelling back to us what the direction of arm swing was and what angle the face was at impact. If you want to investigate for yourself how to strike better golf shots. Barr Charleston City 4-Ball 2007 Championship - Tim Tang and Dustin Barr won the 2007 Charleston City 4-Ball with a birdie on the first hole of sudden death at The Municipal Golf Course. Tim Tang converted a 12 foot birdie putt on the first hole to edge Andrew Motroni and Chris Pond. The approach from 111 yards that set up the birdie was the key to the win. In trouble under trees to the left, Tang hooked a wedge under the trees from 111 yards. Charleston SC Tang and Barr posted 65 to force the playoff with Motroni and Pond, who carded a second day 66. Seven birdies without a bogie gave Tang and Barr their first City 4-Ball Championship. Bobby Mitchell and Dr. John Swicord won the City Senior 4-Ball Championship.(Both players 50 and over playing from the Gold Tees) Their back nine 31 put a fantastic finish on an outstanding 2-day performance. A pair of 68s led the Senior Championship from start to finish, winning by 8 strokes over the nearest competitors. Jerry Wise and Steve Meyer won the City Combination 4Ball Championship.(One player playing from the White Tees and one player 50 and over playing from the Gold Tees) Tournament Schedule 8 Carolinas Golf Association Announces 2007 Championship and Tournament Schedule WEST END, N.C.—The Carolinas Golf Association has announced its 2007 schedule of championships andtournaments.
