Educational Activities and Programs in Environmental and Energy Engineering @ Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria (Italy) speaker: Prof. Francesco Carlo MORABITO morabito@unirc.it The University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria (UNIRC) is an Italian public research university located in Reggio Calabria Southern Italy. It was founded in 1968, and is one of the youngest universities in Italy. Reggio Calabria Sustainable Energy ↔ Environment UNIRC combines its commitment in research and teaching: three areas (Architecture, Engineering, Agricultural Science), are dedicated to the territory, to the energy studies and to the green economy. In the two emgineering Departments (DICEAM & DIIES) Educational Programs, Energy is key: we yield courses at post-graduated level (M.Sc.) and for “Dottorato” (Ph.D.) that emphasize the connection between sustainable energy production and environmental protection. Curricula of M. Sc. course in Environmental Engineering (two years, 120 ECTS): • Environmental Monitoring (courses on Remote Sensing, Environmental Data Processing, Environmental Monitoring Networks); • Sustainable Energy Production and Management (courses on Energy production from waste and residues, Energy from sea-waves, Energy materials, Fuel cells, Smart grids) Courses are delivered in English for international students (e.g. incoming Erasmus+ students) During Ph.D. (3 years) students can participate in the advanced research activities carried out in the departmental laboratories by invited internationally renowned senior scientists. Examples of advanced energy related projects ongoing at University Mediterranea: • Use of biogas in fuel cells https://www.researchgate.net/researcher/78024709_Pierluigi_Antonucci • Sustainable biodiesel production https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Francesco_Mauriello • Use of waste and agro-industrial by products for biogas production https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Paolo_Calabro RESEARCH PROJECT (NATIONAL PROGRAMS COFUNDED BY EU) PON03PE_00012_1 “MARINE ENERGY LABORATORY” PROJECT IDEA MEL - Wind-Energy Conversion on suspended platform off-shore: design and experimental lab of turbine, electric generator, battery, converter and delivery of energy to users.
