The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do
men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your
light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in
heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them
but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass
from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and
teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them
shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
CHILDREN’S CORNER - A LIGHT
TO THE
WORLD!
“Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Mark 10:4
Have you ever seen a lighthouse? Did you know that in the United States there are over a thousand of
them? Some people spend their vacations just visiting these lighthouses—on the ocean coasts and on big
lakes. Lighthouses are beautiful, but they have a purpose, too! They shine out their bright lights at night
so ships won’t wreck on the rocks or on the coast. Lighthouses have saved the lives of many, many sailors. Today’s Gospel tells about bright lights, too. Jesus told His disciples, “You are the light of the
world...Men do not light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the
house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” When we act like good, strong Christians, we are like bright lights, shining out.
Sometimes we might be afraid to show our faith to other people. Sometimes we might be afraid to speak
out. Sometimes we might be afraid to show that we follow our Lord, Jesus Christ. But today we hear in
the Gospel that God wants you to “Let your light shine,” so others can learn to love God, too!
This is an icon
of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He is telling His disciples what we hear in the
Gospel today!

I am happy to announce that we have recently been invited to
dance at the 2015 annual Greek Festival held by The Assumption
of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Galveston!

I have not been told any specific times yet as Galveston is still
coordinating their entertainment schedule. The idea of combining
the Asteria with Galveston's "Dancing Thalassopoulia" group has
been brought up by Galveston and I would love to hear everyone's feedback at the next Asteria meeting. Many of the Asteria
dancers already dance with Galveston's group. October is right
around the corner, so I would love to hold the first Asteria meeting around the second week of August, that way we have time to
catch the new dancers up if needed. If you or anyone you know is
interested in dancing with the Asteria this year or next year,
please send me a message with your contact info so I can keep
you updated! We have a few newbies joining so now is a great
time to learn!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Please join us after the Liturgy for coffee hour in the Parish Home. Parishioners, please allow only coffee hour team members to park in the driveway so they can have easier unloading access.
There is no Sunday school this Sunday. We would like to thank everyone who joined us for our lovely
trip to the monastery last Saturday. It was a truly blessed day shared by many wonderful members of
our church family. We also thank the Philoptochos and our many benefactors from last year that helped
pay for the bus. We hope to plan many more church events in the future.
We are actively searching for a choir director. Please contact the office for further information.
I recently took inventory of the Asteria closet at the parish home and it appears we are missing a TON
of costumes in comparison to the few records/receipts we have. To name a few, we are missing at least..
THREE complete Epirus costumes that were hand made by Kika, FOUR complete Pontian costumes,
FIVE complete Cretan costumes, several white Cretan aprons, several Cretan mandeli's with coins,
Nearly all of the "B" costumes and EVERY SINGLE BOY VRAKA COSTUME IS MISSING. There
was only ONE blue boys vraka in the closet. If you or anyone you may know has a costume that St.
Johns purchased, please send me a message so I may retrieve them at your convenience, even if you
plan on dancing next year (so I can count all of the costumes and have a better idea of what's missing/
torn/discolored) I know it is difficult to keep up with so many costumes over the years, so please bear
with me as we try to find and restock these costumes so our new kiddos get the opportunity to dance in
costume this year. We have quite a few new dancers that need costumes. FILAKIA FILAKIA! Andrea
