Return to Page 1 A “Bold & Beautiful” Remodel Sustainable Manufacturing Tenhulzen Residential, a CC dealer in Bellevue, WA, recently completed a bright, cheerful remodel of a family’s main living space. Here is the Before & After on this colorful project: Canyon Creek has been incorporating green technology into our manufacturing since 1991. Our long-standing commitment to the environment encompasses everything from energy use, resource conservation and recycling, to low-VOC finishes and sustainable products. As a result of our focus, we were the first cabinet company awarded the KCMA’s Environmental Stewardship Program Certificate. While the kitchen was completely gutted, Tenhulzen worked within the existing floor plan. Bright yellow and deep red walls in the original kitchen hint at the homeowners’ love of color. Cabinets are Millennia frameless in the Shaker door style ISO CERTIFIED 9001:2008 Colorful dishware is displayed in new glass-front cabinets. While the arrangement of cabinets is basically unchanged, the glass backsplash and white walls make the kitchen feel much larger and brighter. Cabinets on the far wall echo the blue from the kitchen. While the usable pantry space is unchanged, the bump-out for the door has been removed. The concept for the red pocket door was based on a British phone booth. Colorful shelves were designed to accommodate a variety of packaging. Bright yellow cabinets were introduced into the adjacent family room, where a new desk and hutch-like cabinets provide additional storage and work space. The blue, yellow and green cabinets were ordered through our Pick Your Paint program to match paint swatches provided by the customer (the red was painted on-site). Return to Page 1 Build A Better Beverage Station Whether you entertain a lot or just have an active, thirsty family, beverage stations are a great addition to your kitchen or family room. From a dedicated coffee counter or juice & water spot to a fully-stocked bar, custom cabinets can integrate the serving area into the rest of your space. While you can match the cabinets in your kitchens, a beverage station can be a fun way to introduce a new look. Think about adding a pop of color with painted cabinets, or a different door style to mix things up. Glass cabinet doors can keep attractive wine glasses on display, or a stemware holder underneath the cabinet can be used for that bar effect. Also, incorporate your appliances into your cabinet designs so they fit seamlessly into your space. In addition, you’ll definitely want a mini fridge or wine chiller, along with an ice maker so you’ll be ready to serve up cold drinks at the drop of a hat. A small sink is great for washing up a couple of glasses, and will help keep the kitchen sink open during a gathering. Start Your Day In Style We all know that having an organized closet can save time when getting ready, and also spares hanging items from getting wrinkled, smashed and disregarded. But being organized is only the half of it. With a custom closet design you can have organization and a stylish, pleasant place to start your day. Imagine having your shoes on a rack instead of in a pile, or your suits organized by color and separated from your shirts. Before you get too involved in customizing your closet, take an inventory of your clothing and accessories to know how much you plan on including in your revamped closet. This is a great time to purge ill-fitting, out-of-style items, and helps you to make sure you know what you are working with. Take the opportunity to “play” with your closet design–going for the maximum amount of drawers or hanging space will get the job done, but why not have some fun? Angled shoe shelves will give you a boutique feel, as will things like mirrors, pictures or even small furniture if the room allows for it. For functionality, laundry hamper pull-outs are a great way to keep dirty clothes out of sight, and who wouldn’t want a washer and dryer this handy? Return to Page 1 Maximize Your Kitchen Storage Once upon a time, kitchen cupboards were vertical boxes with shelves, or horizontal boxes that held silverware and a few utensils. Today’s cabinets are a different breed, with lots of options that allow you to make the most of your space. This means more than having a lazy Susan in the corner. In fact, it means you can do just about whatever you want! Drawers aren’t little anymore. Of the many trends finding their way into kitchen cupboards these days, large drawers with organizers are some of the most popular and basic. A silverware drawer that keeps all the utensils in their correct place is only the beginning. Many kitchen designs are implementing deep, wide base drawers for pots and pans. Add some pegs for stacking and you have your entire collection in a tidy and accessible place. Pull out your storage. Imagine not needing to sit on the floor to reach all the way back to find what you are looking for–simply pull it out to you! Tall, narrow pull-outs with three or four shelves are often used on either side of a cooktop to store spices and oils. Roll-out trays are basically shallow drawers that replace shelves in a standard cabinet. There are even optimizers that utilize all of the space in blind corner cabinets! Liven Up Your Kitchen With Glass Doors Want to bring some color into your kitchen and break up a large wall of cabinets? Consider glass-front cabinet doors. By using glass, you are not only making your kitchen feel bigger, you are also creating a way to show off your colorful dinnerware, or that one-of-a-kind pitcher that you bought on vacation. With glass kitchen cabinet doors you can keep these items out of harm’s way, but still on display. Even if you don’t want to display everything in your cabinets, glass doors don’t have to be sparkling clear. In fact, having a frosted texture over your pantry doors to mask the candy bars and the cereal boxes is an excellent way to go. There are all kinds of glass options from patterned to etched, and grooved to opaque, that still give your kitchen the lively style it needs. Colors will come through the glass, but not the details of the cabinet’s contents. In addition to glass, there are a number of decorative acrylic panel inserts that will accent your design. You can also use wire mesh, punched tin, stained glass, metal sheeting, or any number of unique materials to customize your cabinets. » Fresh Tips & Trends » Our “Fresh Tips & Trends” page is full of design tips for kitchens, baths and other rooms.
