the Centre. I look forward to this fall I know it will be fun. Wow! What a summer it has been. It’s hard to believe that it is almost half over. I hope all the members are enjoying these few months of warm weather. The front staff and the board have been working hard behind the scenes. Although many of our programs are not meeAng that doesn’t mean that nothing is going on. As you all know the backbone of the Centre is the volunteers and we are always looking for new blood. The Centre needs people to serve on commiEees and to pitch in for some our upcoming events. If you would like to assist in any way please contact the front desk at Winnipeg St. or talk to Brad at Elphinstone St. There are some exciAng things happening starAng in September and going on for the rest of the year. Keep an eye on the newsleEer next month when these will be announced. The new members of the board are seEling in nicely and are very enthusiasAc about working for Enjoy the rest of the summer at any rate you will sAll see me at either Centre. Joanne CorbeE

RSCC BUS TOUR - ASSINIBOIA
SHURNIAK ART GALLERY
shovel Prince Charles used and
pictures from that day are in a display

The Regina Senior Citizen’s Centre
(RSCC) organized a bus tour consisting
of 49 people to travel out to Assiniboia
on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 on Moose
Mountain Bus Lines. The group toured
the Prince Of Wales Cultural And
Recreation Centre, the Shurniak Art
Gallery and the Assiniboia And District
Museum.
Inside this very large complex is a 4
sheet Curling Rink with numerous
seats on the side, a full Gymnasium
with a large stage, a commercial sized
kitchen, Regional Library, Movie
Theatre and rental rooms on the main
floor. Then on the second floor is a
Karate Club, more rental rooms and
the Curling Rink Lounge with large
windows overlooking the ice sheets.
The group left Regina at 8:30am and
arrived in Assiniboia after the two hour
bus trip. The first tour stop was the
Prince Of Wales Cultural and
Recreation Centre. It is named “Prince
Of Wales”, as the last time Prince
Charles was in Saskatchewan, he went
to Assiniboia to partake in the official
sod turning ceremony to mark
construction of the building. The

Good Deeds of Kindness at the Regina Senior Ci4zen Centre
Kindness through good deeds
for seniors is what this project
endeavours to accomplish
The idea is to offer good deeds along the way, while also featuring others doing good deeds thereby
bringing seniors and youth together. The project hopefully will inspire others to take part and to really
explore the idea that good deeds actually make monumental differences in people's lives. Street
Culture Kidz and the Regina Senior Citizens Centre have partnered on tthis project that will see youth
interact with older adults through acts of kindness. The basic premise is that Street Culture youth will
assist one older adult each week for a few hours during the summer. They will pull weeds and spruce
up the seniors’ planters and gardens.
The Good Deed Project was initiated by the Street Culture Kidz Group.
I will be sending out a group of girls from Street Culture to do a good deed with some of our seniors
that are unable to physically bend down and tend their gardens. It will be a one day a week project. I
will phone one of my seniors and have the girls go and work with our senior with yard work on
Thursday afternoon over the summer months for a few hours each time.
This community movement endeavours to promote random acts of kindness towards seniors.
Thank You

Senior Applause
By Ray Zelowsky
Shelby Harrower-‐ Office Manager at R.S.C.C
Usually when I write a column I ask the subject to pen a few notes so I know what they are all about. However Shelby did such a good job that I decided to let her tell her own story-‐ this makes it very personal.
My name is Shelby Harrower; I am 19 years old and am currently working at the R.S.C.C. as a summer student for my mother Jackie. I also work as an eyewear consultant at the opAcal centre in Superstore; and for the Saskatchewan Blind Sports AssociaAon as a Goal ball Coach, and am in charge of hosAng pracAces twice a week and helping athletes progress within the sport of Goal ball. Lastly, I work for the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports AssociaAon as the Regional Bridging the Gap Coordinator; my posiAon for this job is to help people with physical disabiliAes find a wheelchair sport of their choosing and help them get involved in community in a recreaAonal manner.
Wheelchair sports have always been a very big passion of mine ever since I was a liEle girl. My sister Cory has cerebral palsy and started playing wheelchair basketball when I was around 5yrs old. AYer seeing my sister parAcipate in this sport I decided that I would like to try it out. I started playing when I was 6yrs old and have been playing ever since. Wheelchair basketball is the only sport in the world where people with a disability can compete at a naAonal level with a person who is able bodied. My biggest accomplishment so far with in the sport was in May 2015, when my team won a bronze medal at the Canadian NaAonal Women’s Wheelchair Tournament in Calgary. I competed in this tournament with my sister Cory and was the leading scorer for Team Sask with 27 points. This was also the very first August 2015!

Ame Saskatchewan has ever medaled at a women’s naAonal tournament. I am currently studying at the U of R, and taking TherapeuAc RecreaAon within the faculty of Kinesiology. TherapeuAc RecreaAon is focused on helping people with an illness or disability to become more acAve and get involved in recreaAonal acAviAes in the community. My dreams for the future with this degree are to become a NaAonal Wheelchair Basketball Coach and be able to help people within the sport of wheelchair basketball accomplish their dreams.
We o@en hear about how our youth simply waste their Ame on their youth. However as you can see by reading Shelby’s descripAon that this is the furthest thing from the truth! A@er reading what this young lady has packed into her life we can truly say – “the youth isn’t wasted on the young!” Believe me a@er dealing with many teenagers I can tell you that there are many teenagers like Shelby. You’ll noAce that not only are they spending their Ame learning, they are also helping others. Quite o@en aiding seniors is at the top of their list. As Office Manager at the R.S.C.C. one of Shelby’s tasks is to work with seniors. Recently I asked a senior that had just spent some Ame with Shelby what she thought of her. The senior replied “Wow! What a pleasure it was being in that young ladies company-‐ she makes me feel at home when I come to the centre! She is polite, knowledgeable and above all respecRul to us-‐ you can tell she likes being here!”
I should menAon that one thing that Shelby didn’t tell us in the write up is that she is a singer and performs in a very pleasant and professional way.
This arAcle is called Senior Applause-‐ so seniors go ahead and applaud!
Thanks Shelby

The Civic Holiday...
The Civic Holiday is celebrated on the first Monday of August and it's a public holiday in
some provinces and territories. The civic holiday is not a statutory holiday.
It is known by many names in different provinces and municipalities.
It's called Regatta Day in Newfoundland, Saskatchewan Day in SK, British Columbia
Day in BC, Natal Day in Nova Scotia and PEI, Simcoe Day in Toronto, New
Brunswick Day in New Brunswick, Colonel By Day in Ottawa, Heritage Day in Alberta
and Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, ON. It is called Benjamin Vaughan day in the
City of Vaughan, Ontario.
The Civic Holiday is commonly referred to as the August long weekend. It is probably
the busiest day on highways as tens of thousands of families go camping, to cottages
etc. this weekend.
Each municipality that opts to declare the holiday can give it a unique name. It's called
the "civic" holiday because it's the holiday that cities have authority to declare.

Poetry ...
Life is a pathway that you follow
each turn has a hill and hollow
up and down, ‘round and about.
Each day you live have no doubt
that somewhere down that road
you will have to carry a load
of hopes, dreams, joys and sorrow
knowing “there’s always tomorrow”.
If today has its problems
in order to solve them--handle with care: try to be fair.
Take time to share: take time to care.
Take time to listen: take time to think.
Take time to hear what others speak.
Close your mouth but not your eyes
before you speak something unwise.
Open your ears and listen closely
when someone speaks of being lonely.
Reach out and touch have no fear
and watch the loneliness disappear.

Poetry ...
We feeble humanswith feet of clay,
Travel our journey with merriment,
Without a care,
As a flock of birds in early spring,
Until that day,that dreadedday,
We must look backoffid in one secondcome ta rcalize that there are
Somepatcheswe needto mend or make amend.
With sudden and startling clarity we see it all,
We understandit all,
Yes! We are all so transient, perishableand weak, that we must standstraight
When the wind blows and decideswho must go,
or is to stayjust a bit longer to enjoy the breeze,
The sun's warmth"
A gentlekiss,
A bit more love.

Supported Retirement ...
Greetings from Supported Retirement..we hope you are enjoying the summer and the
beautiful weather we are having so far.
Our group has continued attending the Wednesday and Friday dances averaging 7 dancers.
We welcomed two new participants this spring, Pat Kilbride and Janice Shaw.
Our Thursday morning group has been very busy the past couple of months. Some of our
activities have included attending the Centre Pancake Breakfast, walks in the neighborhood,
our monthly Northgate Mall breakfasts, a visit to a local greenhouse to purchase plants and
individually plant them in pots to take home, lawn bowling, picnics both in Wascana Park
and Ipsco, a wiener roast at Bev's, Lumsden for breakfast, a tour of Global News, and
shopping. We try to get out into the community as much as we can during the summer
months to take advantage of the weather.
Our August calendar is also full with the following activities planned:
August 6 - tour by trolley of the RCMP barracks, followed by a tour of the Heritage Center
August 13 - a Centre activity
August 20 - volunteer work at the Humane Society
August 25 - tour of Rawlco Radio
August 27 - breakfast/shopping at Northgate Mall.
Once again this year we continue to have Green Days on Fridays to show our Rider support
and invite you to join us!
I will be away the week of August 10, and once again I leave the program in Carol's trusty
hands.
That's it for this month! Hope you continue to have a safe and happy summer!

PHOEBE AT LARGE
The Elphinstone Centre has been very busy this month. On July15 a bus
load of enthusiastic members, enjoyed a trip to the Assinaboia Art Gallery
and the Heritage Museum (see this newsletter for a report and pictures). It
was so much fun everyone was clambering for another outing. Many
suggestions were brought forth and Brad will be looking at them.
Last Thursday the 24th the annual Exhibition Barbeque was held. We all
had a rocking good time.

Sweet, Sweet Summertime!
Summertime is a special time—long, lazy days filled with sunshine, warm sand on our toes, juicy
strawberries, the plaintive cry of loons at the lake, hot dogs roasted over the campfire, sipping iced tea
and watching the sun go down. But even more important, it’s a time for families to get together;; it’s a time of visiting and reconnecting. Time and the miles between us slip away as we listen to
grandchildren giggling and reminisce about days gone by. It’s a time of simply enjoying each other’s company. Together, we make memories that will last a lifetime…..and well beyond. Love endures all things.
Summertime is also a good time to talk with our family about practical things like wills, power of
attorney, downsizing to a smaller home with less maintenance, medical concerns, and future planning.
It might surprise you to know that it’s also a good time to talk about funeral preplanning so that your family knows what your wishes are. Our experience has shown us that stress can be greatly reduced
if final arrangements have been discussed, planned, and if you wish, pre-funded. Our preplanning
specialist, Brad Funston, would be honoured to assist you by explaining the emotional and financial
advantages, and the options available to you through our preplanning service. He is available to meet,
at your convenience, in your home or at Speers. And, we’d love to meet the people who are special to you!
Have a wonderful and safe summer everyone!
The loving embrace of family.
