House Shirts
We are inviting the students to wear our house shirts each
Friday. At recent staff and parent meetings it has been decided
to extend our school-based competitions, both academic and
sporting. In addition, our lunch time activities will also be
enhanced so that the house points system can be accumulated
and fully complement classroom activities. You will see below
the acceptable uniform shirts showcased by our new house
captains. Plenty of stock is available. Cost = $15.00.

FROM THE DEPUTIES’ DESK
Taking Photos at School (and School Events)
Before the internet (in the olden days) we could take photos
and videos of our children performing and competing in school
events. These photos were displayed in family photo albums
and in photo frames around the family home. In other words
we had more control over who saw and/or had access to these
photos/images. Unfortunately today with the internet and social
media, along with changes to the “Privacy Act” and “Student
Protection”, we are no longer permitted to take photos or other
recordings (e.g. video, voice) of people without their permission
(in the case of children, without their parent/caregivers
permission).
So for the safety and protection of all of our students, if
you are taking photos or recordings of your child at school,
please ensure that you do not capture or include others
(i.e. students, staff and other community members) in these
photos or recordings, unless you have the appropriate
permission.
Life Education
Every year all of our students participate in the Life Education
Program. The Life Education Program motivates and
empowers young people to make smart life choices for their
healthy future. Our P&C supports this program and pays for
all students to attend the mobile van and receive a follow-up
workbook. This means that there will be no cost to families.
The Life Education Team and Harold the Giraffe will be
visiting us from Tuesday 12 April until Thursday 28 April,
2016. A special “Parents and Visitors Program” will be held on
Tuesday 12 April, at 2pm. Details about the program and your
invitation to the “Parents and Visitors Program” has been sent
home.
Stop, Drop and Go
As most of you are aware, the success of our two minute “Stop,
Drop and Go” zone requires cooperation and patience from all
motorists and children, to ensure quick clearance of vehicles in
the zone. Most of the time this is occurring and we would like to
thank the drivers who are doing the right thing. However, due
to some recent reports of concerns we would like to remind
everyone that:
• You should not be parking in the zone, getting out of
your vehicle and walking away.
• You should not be parking for longer than the signed
times.
• If you are the first car, please make sure that your
vehicle is within the marked area because if you are
too far forward (i.e. over the line) the buses cannot
safely get past you to turn into the bus stop area.
Safe Holidays
We would like to wish everybody a safe and relaxing holiday.
We would also like to thank all of our parents and caregivers for
their ongoing support.
Kind regards and happy reading
Your Deputies Jane Tuckett and Brendan Creighton
1C, 1M, 1P, 1Q AND 1W
What a great start to Year One we have had. The past nine
weeks have gone by so quickly and the Easter holidays are
nearly upon us. The students have worked hard this term and
have adjusted to the demands of the curriculum well. However,
we are sure they will be ready for a well-deserved break!
In English the students have been working on demonstrating
an understanding of the structure and purpose of recounts and
we have enjoyed sharing many different texts with them. They
have also been extending their writing through daily writing. It is
amazing to see how far some of their writing has come since
the beginning of term.
For History the students have been discussing significant
milestones in their lives and have been learning to plot them
on a timeline. They have really enjoyed sharing these with their
fellow students. We have had some interesting presentations
and have learnt a lot about each other in the process.
Presenting to the class can often be a scary thought for some
students but with practice and encouragement their confidence
naturally increases and some even find they enjoy the
experience.
It has been lovely to have the chance to discuss the progress of
the students through Parent Teacher Interviews. It is necessary
to have a working partnership between home and school to
ensure a productive year. As always if there are any questions
or concerns that you may have please contact your child’s
class teacher to organise a time to discuss the matter.
Finally, we would like to congratulate all of the students on their
efforts this term. Settling into a new year level is always difficult
but we have found that the students have been adjusting well.
We ask that you continue to work alongside us as we
emphasise independence and assist the students with
becoming more responsible members of the school. This
means allowing your child(ren) to come into class on their own
and taking responsibility for their belongings- such as mental
munchies and homework folders. Thank you to those parents
who have already been helping us with this endeavour.
Kind regards
Bernadette Chisholm, Katie Phillps, Erin Mallouk,
Fiona Quinn and Edward Williams
3C, 3H, 3LM, 3M AND 3MS
Term one has flown past quickly as students settled in to
new classes and routines. Well done to 3H for their smooth
transition from other classes.
We encourage all students to think about their behaviour as
they are now in the senior school. Are they doing the best they
can do? We are looking for responsibility and maturity. They
need to show responsibility when arriving at school by being
able to have their gear ready such as their Mental Munchies
and drink bottles. Lining up outside classrooms is one thing all
Year 3 teachers have been targeting over the past fortnight.
Expectations are high and most children, although not all, are
showing excellent sitting up and quiet behaviour when lining up.
Other rules such as keeping hands and feet to oneself and not
joining in with name calling have been a focus as well. This led
into our Bullying – No Way! Day on March 18th.
Uniforms are great! Most Year 3s are continuing to have the
correct socks, shoes, laces and uniform. Please check that nail
3
polish is not being worn after the weekend and earrings are
suitable for school. Hats and drink bottles are required every
day!
Parent interviews are well and truly underway and it is a perfect
opportunity for you to talk to your child’s teacher about their
progress in all areas of the curriculum.
Swimming is over for another year and those who attended
enjoyed the chance to improve their skills. It was also an
opportunity to be in cool water during some hot and steamy
days.
Once again please ensure the students have covers for the
drink bottles they are bringing into the classroom, so the
condensation doesn’t ruin work, as this often distresses the
students. Please also ensure your child has the correct
stationery. It is very disruptive to students if they are constantly
being asked, by other students, to borrow items.
In class, in English, all Year 3s have been working on their
Narratives and have recently started the Persuasive Genre. (Be
warned parents, they will become very talented in the ability
to speak and write persuasively and know the techniques for
getting as much out of you as they can, all without throwing
a tantrum!) In Mathematics, we have concentrated on Number
along with Time in five minute intervals, fractions, properties
of 3D shapes and weighing and hefting objects in the study
of Mass. In Geography, we have focussed on Australia and
its important features, including mapping those features. In
History, it is the difference between Celebrations and
Commemorations. Our visual Arts is all about Australian animals
with some interesting koalas, emus and platypus decorating
our walls.
There are many activities and important events coming up in
Term 2. Some of them are Life Education, our school ANZAC
Day ceremony, NAPLAN, school photos, Athletics carnival and
Report Cards.
We hope you all have a happy and safe Easter holiday break
and look forward to seeing all students back after the holidays,
rested and ready to do their best!
Regards
Casey Cameron, Catherine Horne, Andrea Lepherd,
Louise McMillan, Natasha Mudri, Kristy Simmonds.
We have also noticed many students are coming to school
without breakfast; and, as we know it is the most important
meal of the day so please make sure your child is well
nourished. In a classroom setting it is very easy to see the
results of students who don’t eat a healthy breakfast. They
become lethargic, inactive and less engaged in classroom
activities because they find it hard to concentrate.
Hats are also a must especially with the extremely high UV rays
in Queensland. Even if it is cloudy we can still get sun damage
and as the ‘No hat no play”, policy still stands it is imperative
that the students are reminded to bring their labelled OSS hats.
If you could please ensure that the students have sun block
protection on in the morning, then if need be, they can then
reapply it if we are going out after morning tea.
Gala Day Sport was to begin on Friday 11th March, but it was
cancelled due to the rain. If your child has been selected, please
ensure they have drink bottles, hats and appropriate footwear.
Camp is being formalised for the beginning of term three
(August), and will be confirmed at a later date.
We are also organising a gold mining excursion and a trip to St.
Helena Island to complement our History units of study. Notes
will be sent home at a later date.
Regards
5B, 5D, 5M AND 5S
Dear Parents/Grandparents and carers,
As our exciting English unit entitled ‘The Forest of Silence’
comes to an end, the students have written a character analysis
of the main character and are in the process of completing
the first chapter of a fantasy novel. They have put a lot of
thought into the analysis of the characters’ development and
have shown that they can use a range of language features we
have studied, and we are very proud of their efforts.
Homework will take the same format next term where it goes
home Monday of each week and needs to be returned on the
Friday, unless the students have made other arrangements with
their teacher. Students should be reading for a minimum of
15 minutes per night. This is a requirement of their homework
and an essential part of their learning. Remember to ask the
students questions about their text to ensure they understand
what they are reading.
The students have been enjoying their LOTE (German) lessons
and have had an opportunity to participate in the Karnival
excursion. The students’ behaviour was exceptional, and a fun
day was had by all. Thank you to Paula Hay, Michael Howlett
and all the other teachers and parents involved.

GERMAN NEWS
As the term draws to a close, all the students have been
working very hard on finishing our international art presentations
… all 8 sets of characters are now complete and the selection
process will now begin. 18 of each article will be sent to Berlin –
some of which will continue on their way to way to Poland. They
will be displayed in the school library in Berlin in May as part of
an International Art display and also in the individual classrooms
of the school.
We are looking forward to receiving the craft articles from
Europe and then we will have our own art display in May in the
library for all the classes of the school.
We will also send over some personal greetings from Ms
Andrew, Frau Hay and the students from Ormeau. Until then,
we have lots of letters to answer from Berlin.
The students have worked very hard during the term
contributing some beautiful festival art work to decorate the
classroom. This was also an activity designed to focus on the
value of responsibility of each student as time was provided in
class, with the task to be completed for homework and handed
in.
Finalists in the Karneval art will be judged by the classes over
the coming weeks and the students are very excited as they
wait for the results.
The year six students have added to the decoration of the room
with ‘Ostern’ art.
Next Term, our Music Captains for 2016 will receive their
badges on parade. Congratulations to the following year 6
students who have been awarded the following positions
Strings Captains - Lana P and Miu N
Choir Captains - Lily J and Taiysh W
Band Captain - Holly E and Nicola M
Here at Ormeau State School we try to provide multiple
opportunities for all students in many areas including the
performing arts. This year, a selection of our music students
will be invited to partake in Fanfare, Regional music camp,
Beginners music week, Reach workshops, Beenleigh
Eisteddfod and Ormeau Fair and various parade performances
throughout the year.
Nominations for the Regional music camp have been
completed and acceptance documentation including bus
information will be released on Friday 15 April.
Pimpama Secondary College is offering a REACH program
inviting Year 6 students to participate in 8 half day workshops
and one full day within their chosen major, Dance, Drama or
Music. Interested students are asked to send in a 1 minute
video submission displaying their performance skills in one of
the three areas. All submissions must be emailed to Head of
Performing Arts, Rebecca Costello by Wednesday 13 April at
rcost37@eq.edu.au . For more information contact Rebecca.
Wishing you all the best for a safe, happy and relaxing Easter
break.
Kind Regards
Naomi Kircher
Classroom Music
The German room at Ormeau is very colourful and creative and
is blossoming each week.
The students are enjoying the lessons and that is very pleasing.
SCIENCE NEWS

MUSIC NEWS
Term 1 done and dusted and what a fantastic way to finish with
Ms Andrew joining our Ormeau band students on Tuesday’s
Senior parade playing ‘Thunder and Lightning’. Ms Andrew
took part in the inaugural Principals Music challenge.
Conditions of entry required that Ms Andrew attended band
rehearsals and perform with the Ormeau ensemble. The
performance was recorded and we are hoping that her stellar
efforts will be rewarded with one of the great prizes on offer.
Responding to the question; How do you use your senses to
keep safe?
If you smell something bad like fire or you hear the bell, you
have to get out of the house.
Year 1: School yard Safari
Explaining the details of labelled diagrams of ants, earthworm
and butterflies
Earthworms try to protect themselves by grabbing onto the soil
with their hairs when a bird tries to eat it
5
Year 2: Mixtures: Learning about mixing
substances
Responding to – explain your understanding of a mixture.
A group of 2 or more substances is put together. It can be
runny or thick and some are edible and not edible
Year 3: Feathers, Fur or Leaves
Responding to a request to explain the features of an animal
group.
Mammals are a type of vertebrate and they give their babies
milk, so we are mammals.
Year 4: Friends or Foes
Responding to the question; Why are insects important to
plants?
The plants need the bees for pollination, so they can make
more seeds.
Year 5: Adaptations in the dessert
Responding to the question; What happens to leaves in times
of drought?
Desiccation is when trees are under stress because there is not
enough water available from the ground, so the leaves curl up
to try to conserve water.
Year 6: Micro-organisms
Responding to a request to explain the role of yeast in the
production of bread.
The role of yeast in the bread making process is to help the
bread rise or prove. Fermentation is when the yeast eats the
sugar and carbon dioxide gets produced then tries to escape
through the dough. It pushes out and can get trapped, causing
air bubbles.
Curriculum during Term 2 will be focussed on Chemistry for all
year levels, except for Year 2, which will be a Physics unit.
Happy holidays and we truly hope the Easter Bunny brings
some science equipment inside those Kinder Surprises.
Cheers Leanne, Janelle and Alex
