Mount Airy Summer 2014 “Building a Healthier Community through Parks, Programs and Partnerships!” Parks and Recreation Crape Myrtles will bloom beautifully if left untouched Garden Spot by Michella Huff The warm weather has brought about some changes in the garden. I see natural changes in the landscape as well as altered ones at the hands of homeowners or their landscapers. The most common “alteration” I see when riding throughout many cities and in Mount Airy is the severe pruning done to Crape Myrtles. Crape Myrtles will bloom beautifully if left untouched for many, many years. They will also bloom on new wood as well. The misconception is that they must be cut back each year for them to bloom…..this is simply not true. Crape Myrtles come in many heights and sizes. If the homeowner or property owner desires a Crape Myrtle to be more “shrub like” in height the option is there. With a little research, the preferred variety in the desired size should be considered. Crape Myrtles range in size from 3 feet tall to 30 feet tall. Knowing the mature height of the plant before you buy it and planting the proper size for your site will save you much heartache and backache in the future. Below are some pictures of topped Crape Myrtles and the difference in growth from the initial cut to three years of rapid growth (water sprouts): Here are Crape Myrtle varieties to choose from: Catawba – Upright, small growing up to 15 feet tall and wide; deep purple blooms; orange-red fall color Osage – Arching, open small tree growing up to 15 feet tall; light pink, long bloomer; beautiful cinnamon brown bark; red fall color Natchez – Vase shaped tree growing up to 30 feet tall and wide; beautiful cinnamon, peeling bark; white blooms; longest blooming Crape; orange-red fall color Miami – Upright, small tree growing up to 25 feet tall; beautiful cinnamon bark; orange fall color Dynamite – Medium tree size growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide; dark red blooms; orange –red fall color Sioux – Tree type growing 20 feet tall; light pink blooms; smooth cinnamon bark; orange fall color Unless you absolutely need to prune Crape Myrtles, leave them alone! They are beautiful and sturdy plants when left to grow in their natural form.
