It is straightforward to see if your business is
profitable; add up everything that being in
business costs you over a set period of time
then work out what your business delivers in
terms of income over that same period of time.
Take your outgoing costs from your incoming
monies and what is left is profit, unless of
course it’s a minus figure then it’s a loss.

Recognising and understanding your fixed
What are your fixed costs per annum, what is
that per month and when is payment due?
Now you all know this, you all know how to do
this, most of you even do this but owners and
managers can still get in a mess.
Example of Fixed Costs
Fixed costs
A fixed cost is a cost to your business which
stays the same, or fixed, regardless of the level
of client activity. These costs, which include
wages, rent, rates and all overheads, have to
be accounted for and paid whether the salon is
busy, quiet, open or closed.
Generally fixed costs change only slightly and
remain fairly constant apart from any one-off
increases like a rent increase. Fixed costs as
well as being a fixed amount are normally due
for payment at fixed times of the month, quarter
or year so they should be easy costs to plan
your payment for.
Unfortunately a lot of business owners don’t
have a financial plan or budget and therefore
don’t set aside money for these fixed costs and
this is one of the causes of cash flow
difficulties, i.e. the salon is taking and making
money but there isn’t enough ‘in the kitty’ to pay
the bills at certain times when a lot of bills come
in at once.
It is of fundamental importance that you know
what your fixed costs are for the year and it’s
this figure which can be referred to as your
‘fixed cost base’. Your business and its overall
performance needs to take enough money to
pay those costs before you can make any profit

When you have added everything together that
is a fixed cost, you then need to work out what
it costs you to be in business every month,
every week, every day and even every hour.
This information is vital when it comes to
working out your treatment fees and if the
treatments you offer are profitable.
For example, a salon is open 48 weeks out of
the 52 each year, 10 hours a day, six days a
week and has three treatment areas: two
sunbeds and a spray booth.
The number of hours that the example salon is
open for is timed by the number of ‘money
making areas’ giving the following sum to
enable you to work out how much each area
has to take per hour to cover the fixed costs:
The three areas are each available to make
money 10 hours each day, six days a week
over 48 weeks of the year: 3 x 10 x 6 x 48 =
8,640 hours
Fixed costs = £113,696 divided by 8,640 =
£13.16 per hour.
Variable costs
Once you have a clear understanding of your
fixed costs, you then need to investigate your
variable costs. A variable cost is a cost which
changes or varies, according to the number of
treatments carried out.
Variable costs are those costs made up of all
the products and consumable items used in
the carrying out of a treatment or service. The
price of these goods needs to be deducted
from the treatment sales price (remembering to
take it from the net price not gross price if VAT
registered) when working out how profitable a
treatment is.
The treatment sales price is considered as the
money coming into the business from each
treatment completed, and from that the ‘variable
costs’ are the first costs to be deducted i.e.
spray tan solution.
The second costs to be deducted are the fixed
costs accrued during the time it took for the
treatment to be given (based on your fixed
costs calculations), and therefore how much
that particular treatment contributed to paying
your ‘fixed cost base’.

been practised and talked about for a good thirty years
before that - just not in a form that was appropriate for
the pages of Vogue, nor quite how we would recognize it
today.”

of days, invigorating his body each day,’ betraying an
appreciation of the physical, sensual and even aesthetic
radiance it bestowed.”
The sun is a popular commodity
“In the UK Trademark Registry there are 497 registered
trademarks using the sun as a symbol. There are 353 for
the cross, 366 for the crown, and only 239 for the flag.”
Tans were once considered
unfashionable
“Before the twentieth century those who could shunned the
sun. The fashion was for delicately pale, nearly translucent
skin; anything darker was decidedly déclassé. Only the
poor were tanned - a bronzed skin betokened lives spent
toiling under the elements.
Their betters covered their bodies, pulled the curtains, and
hid behind parasols and wide-brimmed hats. Like modernday Goths, they even used cosmetics to make their skin
look or remain lighter.
Vogue’s first British number from 1916 advertised Helena
Rubinstein’s Valaze Cream. The ‘impurities’ it claimed to
remove included ‘sunburn, freckles and discolouration.’
‘Burn’ and ‘tan’ meant the same thing then, and ‘tanning’
referred to as the process of preparing leather.
By the mid-20s this had changed. By then the poor had
largely forsaken the fields for sunless factories and mines,
allowing the genteel to do a complete volte-face.”
Sunshine was originally prescribed
as a medical cure
“A hundred years ago sunbathing and tanning were only
indulged in for health reasons, to cure or prevent
diseases.
In 1903 Dr Auguste Rollier opened the world’s first
dedicated sun clinic, at Leysin high in the Swiss Alps. He
was convinced that the pure air and bright sunlight could
cure a variety of diseases.
On arrival, Rollier’s patients didn’t just strip off and dive in
like so many sun-starved Brits on the first day abroad. The
gradual process of acclimatization took about two weeks,
and only then were his patients allowed to dip their toes
into the ‘sun baths’.
One of the first British societies for social nudity was
called the Sun Bathing Society, and there was also a
British Sunbathing Association, and a National Sun and Air
Society in these formative years. Most of the private
grounds dedicated to clothes-free living were called ‘sun
clubs’, clearly indicating the idol around which their
activities resolved.”
