City of Roman Forest
The Forum CITY OF CITY OF Here’s a great chance to have some fun, meet some of your neighbors, and help make improvements to the Roman Forest pool. R.F. CARES is sponsoring a bus trip to Coushatta Casino in Kinder, Louisiana on Saturday, February 9th. The cost is $25 per person. The bus will be leaving from City Hall at 9 AM, arriving at the casino at about noon. A lunch of sandwich, chips and soda, is included and will be served on the bus. On the trip over we’ll be playing numerous bingo games for prizes. Your first bingo card is $5, and if you’d like to play two cards at once, the second card is just $2. You’ll have about 6 hours in the casino, then at 6:30 the bus will leave for Roman Forest, arriving back at City Hall about 9:30. We’re hoping our bus will be equipped with a DVD system so we can show a movie on the ride back home. There are only 40 spaces available, so sign up now. Contact Liz at 281-608-2356. Hope to see you there! Editor wanted!!! Have you ever thought of publishing a monthly newsletter? I think you’ll agree that Michelle Hayes has been doing a super job as Editor for our first eight issues of The Forum. But she’s also a full-time teacher in Splendora, and she’s not going to be able to continue editing the newsletter going forward. If you like layout design (or would like to learn), please contact Liz at the number listed above. We think this monthly newsletter really helps build community spirit, and we’d like to keep it going, but we need a volunteer editor. Yara Santos tells us that her book review team has ―adopted‖ fifteen USAF airmen who are currently deployed in the Middle East. They’re putting together a ―care package‖ to send to the troops. They’d like to send it off about February 1th so it’ll arrive by Valentine’s day. The airmen have submitted a wish list of items they’d like to have, but have trouble getting over there: protein bars, Starburst candies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, skin lotion, shampoo, sunscreen, gum, coffee, mints, sunflower seeds, nonaerosol aftershave, and beef jerky. If you’d like to donate items, or cash to help put the care package together, please email Yara (santos7305@aol.com). Bring your 2012 tax documents, last year’s federal tax return, your Social Security card and a picture ID with you. February is the month to share your love with your sweetheart!! It’s also a month to get organized for the Spring Time when we all want to enjoy the weather. Here are just a few things to do in February to either get organized or reminisce in the past. Clean out your medicine cabinet. Look for stale-dated over-thecounter remedies, make-up you don’t even remember buying, and any bottles that are almost empty. (Toss the first two, and use up the last one.) Examine your summer shoe collection. Sounds crazy, but imagining wearing them with your favorite little sundress will give you temporary respite from the winter blahs. And on a practical level, if there’s a buckle that needs to be fixed or a sole that needs reinforcing, you can get it done now so you’ll be ready to kick up your heels when the sun comes out for real. Go through old love letters. Everyone has a shoe box full of past memories, pictures, movie ticket stubs, dried flowers…Can you think of a better time to review them? Pour yourself a glass of wine or lemonade and spend some quality time with your past. It might put a smile on your face. Buy Flowers. Treat yourself --Continued on next page or your sweetheart a colorful, bright, stunning bouquet full of stems of varying lengths and exotic aromas that delight the senses. Give them a place of honor in your home. Send a Valentine. Turn off the TV. Work and Play as a family. If you like to work in the outdoors then for our zone (Zone9) here are a few things to try and get done in, February. •Plant bare-root fruit trees •Sow seeds of warm-season annuals indoors •Plant summer-flowering bulbs •Sow seeds for hardy spring-blooming annuals •Plant bare-root roses •Plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and vines •Plant citrus •Plant bare-root perennial vegetables •Apply dormant spray to fruit trees •Sow seeds for tender perennials indoors •Repair or plant lawns •Plant or transplant frost-tolerant perennials outdoors •Prune deciduous trees •Spray for peach leaf curl, peach leaf blight, and canker •Repot cacti and succulents, if essential, once they have finished blooming •Prune winter-flowering shrubs and vines just after bloom •Prune rose bushes on February 14th down to 14 inches from base of plant •Plant seedlings of cool-season or winter vegetables •Sow seeds for cool-season or winter vegetables •Sow seeds for warm-season vegetables indoors ---More information to come on the Chili Cook-Off in March and Yard Sale in April.-Happy Valentines Roman Forest!! Mayor’s Message Roman Forest Residents, Mayor Ray Ricks Keith Schoonover, Community Development Manager for Friendswood Development Company, attended our January 8th City Council Meeting regarding their plans for the area named Tavola (located between Roman Forest and the freeway, on the south side of the boulevard). He expressed a desire that Tavola be a part of Roman Forest but did not state to what extent. They also plan to remove the Roman Forest Columns located in the center median and on the south side. These have become historical landmarks for the City of Roman Forest and I hope that we can preserve them. We will continue to have meetings with Friendswood Development working together to develop a strong relationship between the City of Roman Forest and Friendswood Development. Their plans are to have 431 total lots to build homes on ranging in different price ranges starting at the 120’s. They also plan to build a new elementary school and eventually have a park and swimming pool area. The lots that run parallel with the railroad tracks are reserved for commercial building. City Council approved the formation of a new committee. The Roman Forest Economic Development Committee was formed to make recommendations to the Mayor and Council on the issue of liaison with Friendswood Development Corp. (and appropriate agencies) regarding potential economic impact of that area for the City of Roman Forest. The Committee interim chair is Steven Wanderman. Committee members will be appointed and a chairperson voted upon. All Roman Forest residents are welcome to attend these meetings. Check the CityOfRomanForest.org website for information on meeting dates. We have just started updating the cities website CityOfRomanForest.org. Beginning with the January 2013 agenda and minutes these will be posted as soon as they become available. City Council Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month. The next City Council meeting is February 12th at 6:30 pm. This is your opportunity to participate in City Government. I am looking forward to seeing you. Happy Valentines Day!!! Lee/Jack Countryman pg. 18-19 Like Ruth of the Old Testament, women of steadfast loyalty and faith have been key to America’s strength. One such woman was Ruth Bell Graham, wife of America’s beloved twentieth-century spiritual leader Dr. Billy Graham. Throughout their life together, Dr. Graham often emphasized how vital his wife was to his own success, noting that ―my work through the years would have been impossible without her encouragement and support.‖ For her own part, Mrs. Graham’s quiet commitment to her God and to her family reflected the determination of her biblical namesake to follow the God of Israel. Mrs. Graham once explained, ―I must faithfully patiently, lovingly, and happily do my part—then quietly wait for God to do His.‖ That same faithfulness was what led the widowed and desolate Ruth of the Bible to become the wife of Boaz and a member of the line of Jesus Christ. I know STAAR tests are getting closer and many of us in grades 3+ are starting to get nervous. Remember the closer the test is, the closer summer is. YEAH!!! With Valentine ’s Day coming up this month, I know many of you are worrying about that special someone or that cute boy or girl that sits near you in class. What do you do or get for that special someone in your life? Well, remember we are just kids and Valentines can be about everyone special in our lives. Try to make it a day that you just treat everyone—yeah even your parents and little brother—just a little bit nicer. Show those you care about how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate them in your lives. If you do something special or someone, or if someone does something special for you, share it with us and we’ll put it in the next newsletter. I hope everyone has a good month and remember to smile and enjoy each day.
