We are all immensely looking forward to ‘Canada 2015’. Our very presence at this event is huge achievement in itself and great boost to the development of the footballers, the national women’s team and the whole of women’s football in the Netherlands. Now we are fully focused on achieving our goals at this tournament; such as qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. To do this we have to finish in the top three European teams at this world tournament … Quite a challenge, as it really is a difficult task. Nevertheless, we are very ambitious. Even though this will be incredibly difficult, I can see sufficient opportunities. We have already shown how well we can play. We have great qualities as a team and enough players with specific individual qualities. Our main strength is the unity within the team and the fact that we all think the same way about how to get the best result. We want to have a high degree of ball possession, to take the initiative as much as possible and to be on the attack through tactical positioning building up from the back. In doing so, we will keep to the 1-4-3-3 system of play, which 2 media guide 'oranje' lionesses we will perfect right up until the kick-off in Edmonton – and for as long as possible after that. Aspects like increasing the speed of play, perfecting technical skills, getting more out of opportunities, and learning to defend more ruthlessly in some situations will be what make the difference. Whatever happens, we will take huge strides at a great tournament like this World Cup. We have been given the opportunity to play against China, New Zealand and above all the host country in Montreal in a really wonderful setting with 50,000 fanatical Canadian football supporters. That’s what this is all about! I’d like to say to our girls, just keep on doing what you do best, and keep on striving to become that little bit better. They ‘just’ have to show what they are capable of, take pleasure in playing football and enjoy taking part in this great tournament. And, in turn, we, the staff and the fans of the ‘Oranje’ Lionesses, will enjoy watching them – be they young or old, in Canada or at home on TV – as will the many different media organisations, of course. I wish you all and ourselves a very pleasant, lively and successful tournament for our Dutch national team, in which we hope to see many great and memorable moments for ‘Oranje’! A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NETHERLANDS NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM. Achievements The Netherlands national women’s team has been taking part in the qualification matches for the final rounds of the European Championships and the World Cup since 1982. In 2009, the team of the then coach Vera Pauw made it to the European Championships, where the Netherlands made an impression by reaching the semi-finals as debutant. After beating Ukraine (2-0), losing to host Finland (2-1) and beating Denmark (2-1), the Netherlands won against France in the quarter final with a 0-0 draw and penalties (5-4). The final round which was finally won by Germany, ended for the Netherlands in the semi-final against England, which scored 2-1 right at the end of extra time. The current national women’s coach Roger Reijners also managed to win a place on the European stage with the ‘Oranje’ Lionesses. In 2013, the team made it into the group phase in Sweden (Germany - Netherlands 0-0, Norway Netherlands 1-0 and Netherlands - Iceland 0-1). The Royal Netherlands Football Association stands for ‘football to be loved’. This is where our girls and women play a splendid exemplary role: welcoming the next generation of girls and women into football, which makes our sport greater, richer, more diverse and more exciting. A generation which inspires, connects and boosts the traditional world of football. This gives us the opportunity to raise the number of women members in the sport to 145,000 by 2017 – when we will have the pleasure of holding the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 – and increasing that number to 150,000 by 2018.
