Brad Ziemer, one of the authors of this golf magazine,
joined The Vancouver Sun way back in 1985 after spending five years at the Canadian Press news agency.
He has handled the Sun’s golf beat for the last 17 years,
long enough to see Mike Weir win on the Canadian Tour
at Mayfair Lakes and then on the PGA Tour at Northview. Ziemer, a graduate of Port Coquitlam High School
(now Terry Fox) and Western Washington University, also covers the
Vancouver Canucks. When he isn’t writing about golf in the spring and
summer, he can often be found playing it, badly. A single-digit handicap
for one fleeting summer, he is now happy to break 90.

Veteran Province writer Lowell Ullrich has traded his
football cleats for clubs for this edition of the Golf
Guide. Ullrich, who normally covers the B.C. Lions
for The Province, and has been at the paper for three
decades, considers himself an eternal rookie in golf and,
as a result, helped himself by writing the feature on how
to take up the sport.

We pick up my ball. We see
the next ball, maybe 25 feet
from the hole. The other one?
Nowhere to be seen. Not on
the green, not on the fringe,
nowhere. Why would anyone
even have considered looking
inside the cup?
An albatross. A gall-darned
albatross. Dancing. Shrieking.
Laughter. Weeping. Bodies on
the green. Legs kicking in the
air. You know you make me
want to shout!
Second story, a common one:
Last summer. Casual round.
Ah, that same joyous 13th.
Drive, right down the middle.
Not long, but right down the
middle.
Arrive at the ball to discover
there is no ball. I swear the
ball was right there. I saw it
stop. No ball. No evidence of
ball. Four people look. Nothing. You must have sent it into
the trees, one guy says. Or the
other way, onto a road.
We’ve mentioned before that
golf’s maddening, right?
Two stories, same course,
same hole.
A few years ago, at a charity
golf tournament at Vancouver’s University Golf Club,
my team was on the 510-yard
13th hole. Narrowish but
straight. The drive goes about
270, nice. Best ball, so the big
hitter takes a seat and the other three (yep, I’m not the big
hitter) swing away. My ball,
shock of shocks, lands near
the green. The next guy hits
the green. And the last guy
hits the green, possibly closer
to the hole than the previous
shot.
Well this is looking good.
On in two! Could we possibly
eagle this hole? The dancing
begins.
Penalty. Drop. Tears of a different sort. Bafflement. Feelings of alienation. A strong
desire to quit. Immediately.

this place been?’” said Paul. “I

and said he’d love to be a
member because, ‘I could
play this course every day and
never get bored,’” said tournament chairman Ken Woods.

“Shaughnessy was a challenge
before and will be again.
You’ve got to think strategically; how we get around holes,
the corporate world, the mom
and pop who buy tickets,” said
tournament director Bill Paul.

Three national titles up for grabs this year
PGA golfers aren’t the only ones duking it out in B.C.

The RBC Canadian Open,
which goes July 21-24 at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf
and Country Club, is unquestionably the highlight of this
year’s B.C. golfing calendar.
But not long after Ernie Els,

and company duke it out at
Shaughnessy, this province
will play host to three national
amateur championships.
The Royale Cup Canadian
Women’s Amateur Championship will be held July 25-29 at
Duncan Meadows Golf Club
on Vancouver Island. Sydnee

Boys and Girls Championships will be contested Aug.

The social side of golf

even more heavily on sites like
Twitter and Facebook to help
drive traffic to their course.
“We are definitely using social

“Everybody felt it a little bit
last year,” says Andy Hedley,
vice-president of operations
for Golf BC, this province’s
largest golf course operator.
“Generally, rounds were either
down or flat at our courses.”
Courses are having to market
themselves like they never

Swaine, Sandpiper’s manager
of golf operations. “I might put
a special on Facebook and we
have 600 people there, but if
half those 600 people like it,
it’s also going to touch a number of other people. Those 300
people who like it or share it
might turn into 3,000 people in
a matter of minutes or hours.”
If there is a silver lining to the
golf industry’s bad times, it’s
that many courses are being
forced to hold the line on green
fees — or even lower them.
Redwoods, for example, has
lowered its peak-season weekend fee to $69.95 from $81.
Fees are also dropping at some
of Golf BC’s courses. Peak-

It was one round of golf played
nearly 13 years ago, but Ernie
Els will never forget it.
Not so much the golf — he lost

1998 — but the scenery.
“It was beautiful,” Els says. “It
was a world like I had never
seen before. Coming from
South Africa, I’d never seen
mountains like those. It was
quite an eye-opener and I
remember Fred and myself really enjoyed our visit.
“I also remember saying I had
to get back there, but I haven’t
until now.”
Well, better late than never.
Els will be one of the headliners this summer when the

At age 41, Els knows time is
of the essence if he hopes to
add to the three majors he has
already won — the 1994 and
1997 U.S. Opens and the 2002
British Open. But he certainly
isn’t ready to surrender to
all those relative youngsters
who have crept by him on the
world golf rankings.
“No one is going to beat getting older, that’s for sure,” Els
says. “I have been around a
long time, but I am working as
hard as I ever have. I know the
younger guys maybe have a
little more gas in the tank, but
I feel great. I am in good shape
physically and if I can get a
little more consistent on the
greens I feel like I can still win.
I proved that last year. There is
still a lot of golf to play. Week
in and week out maybe the
younger guys have an advantage, but I’m 41, you know, I’m
not 50 yet. I still have some
time left.”
Els has one of those nicknames that seems to fit perfectly. Years ago, one of his
former sponsors hung The
Big Easy moniker on him and
it stuck. Initially, Els wasn’t
crazy about it, but he’s grown
comfortable with the handle.
After all, he is big — an imposing 6-foot-3, 220 pounds
— and easy describes both his
personality and his seemingly
effortless golf swing.
Sometimes, people mistake
Els’ laid-back personality with
a lack of desire. Els assured us
in an interview that couldn’t
be farther from the truth.
“I think that’s a bit of a mis-
conception,” he says. “I like
to be nice to people, obviously, treat them with respect.
There’s no reason to be an
ass to people that you don’t
know. I have won 60-something (64) events around the
world so I think I have proved

streak in me.
“I play other sports, also. I
really don’t like to lose. The
game of golf is the type of
game where if you get so hard
on yourself you are never going to win. I like to take a little
stress out of it and maybe
relax a bit, but that doesn’t
mean I am not competitive or
not trying to win.”
And just because his rhythmic
swing looks so darn good, it
doesn’t mean Els doesn’t occasionally struggle with it.
“Golf is such a funky sport,
you know,” he says. “There are
so many different parts that
have to flow and be synchronized with each other and
I’ve got a long swing, quite
a big swing, and rhythm is
a big part of my golf swing
and thank goodness it hasn’t
changed too much. There are
days when ball position is a
little out of place or something else happens, but I’m
swinging it pretty nicely at the
moment and I understand my
swing quite well.”
For Scott Simmons, executive director of tournament
organizer Golf Canada, the
addition of Els and the rest
of Team RBC helps move the
Canadian Open to where he
hopes to take it.
“We want to be the best PGA
Tour event on the tour outside
of the majors, the world golf
championships and the TPC,
which we really can’t compete
with,” Simmons says. “But if
you strip those nine events
away we want to be the best
event on Tour. I think with
RBC’s help we have made so
many great strides.”
Simmons believes the addition of Els to the field this
summer will create significant
buzz for the event.
“I think he epitomizes what
the Tour would like to see in
their players,” Simmons says.
“He is a gentleman, he is a
class act, he represents the
game very well and he has
been consistent for many,
many years. In terms of
worldwide wins and earnings
he has to be up there. To have
a guy like that in our field I
think is fantastic. It will attract
a lot of spectators and hopefully he will be able to compete for the title.”
And Els will try to do just that
with a former Vancouver Canuck on his bag. Dan Quinn,
who has caddied on and off
for Els over the last couple
of years, has been invited by
Els to work the Shaughnessy
tourney.
“I think he’ll enjoy that,” Els
says of Quinn. “And he played
in Vancouver as well, so I
think he’ll fit in quite well.” ●

Prep time comes before tee time

Range time isn’t simply a
matter of re-discovering your
swing technique with a bucket
of balls but following a dedicated pattern of target practice
combined with proper exercise long before even pulling
into the parking lot.
“Say a guy is a decent player
and takes the winter off. He
could start and by aiming incorrectly and with bad posture
he could ruin his whole year
of golf. Maybe forever,” Jonas
said.
“I start slow. The first few
shots are about fundamentals,
at a target. Once I’m happy
I start practising like I play;
driver, 8-iron. You get one shot
at it on the course. That’s how
you have to practice. Taking
a bucket of balls and hitting
away is the worst thing you
can do. And when I practice I
set a time limit.”

first tee time, take a couple of
practice swings to shake off
the rust and another golf season is underway.
Congratulations, you’ve just
made your first mistake of the
new year.
To anyone with an even halfdecent game a return to play
usually amounts to more than
a few range sessions prior
to your first round. Those
that know better say they’ve
seen an entire year destroyed
through bad preparation.
“A lot of our mistakes occur
before we even take the club
back,” longtime Lower Mainland teaching pro Philip Jonas
said.
Even range work, however,
can be compromised without
proper off-season exercise.
For Jonas, that includes carrying in his bag a rubberized
stretching device, called a Golf
Gym, he discovered by working with Vancouver golf fitness
trainer Jenny Grills.
“I promote a dynamic warmup as opposed to static
stretching. You want [exercise]
that’s always movementrelated, not strength training,”
said Grills. Hips, lower and
upper back, shoulders and
hamstring muscles are a good
place to start, she said.
A quick visit with a pro for
a proper club fitting is next,
and Jonas suggests emphasis
should be placed on your
driver and wedge. Once you
begin a regular cycle of play,
the trick is to not get discouraged after hitting the links for
the first time.
“A lot of people come back
strong because they have no
expectations,” said Jonas, a
teaching regular at Hazelmere
and McCleery who has his eye
on qualifying this fall for the
Champions Tour.
“Where they fail is the third
and fourth time out. You
should have very little expectations about what you got to
do.”
Above all else, however, is establishing good habits prior to
teeing it up for the first time.
“The old saying practice
makes perfect is not right.
Practice makes permanent,”

if you’re not sure but for those
willing to make an initial investment, figure on $100-300 for a
starter set of clubs before the
bag. Used balls are widely available. Tennis shoes are acceptable for beginners before making the first purchase of soft
spikes. Often overlooked: A coin
or marker, water and sunscreen.
Practice
Spring is for the driving range.
You’ll need every club in your
bag on the course, so practice
with every one of them on the
range. Start with a wedge and
move up to your driver as you
get more comfortable. Many
ranges have teaching pros
available offering a wide range
of lesson packages.

courses, such as Ambleside in
West Vancouver or Kensington
Fraserview
in Burnaby, to get started. Eaglequest has two courses in the
Lower Mainland, Coquitlam and

Fraserview, McCleery and Langara, have regular adult rates of
$42.75. Twilight/sunset rates are
the best deal of course. If cost is
an issue, choose lessons over
equipment for starters, with
MCleery
group lessons being the best
bargain. Burnaby Mountain, for
example, is offering four, onehour range lessons starting at
$124.95.
Etiquette
It’s easy to get humbled if you
are unaware of the game’s finer
points. Here’s just a few:
• The player who is away hits
first, but a group which
agrees on ready play can
speed up a round.
• Don’t walk in the path of a
playing partner’s putting line.
• Stay quiet, except to acknowledge the good shots of others in your group. Don’t talk
while others are hitting. Leave
cell phones, and your worries,

Show in Orlando.
Kikkor is branding itself as an alternative shoe and clearly targeting younger

helped create all the buzz about the
R11 driver, then you should be seeing

Brian Benedictson would be focused on

Swinkey, said Benedictson, combines
many of the teaching aids he had purchased over the years that fit into a metal
pole weighing slightly twice as much as

The 32-year-old got the product into the
bags of 92 PGA Tour pros last year, and
sales interest took off over the winter after
a trip to the PGA merchandise show in
Orlando, Fla.
“I definitely got a few comments of ‘damn
why didn’t I think of that,” said Benedictson, who received an order for 20,000 to

visiting my grandparents up on the veranda après-golf! The front
nine is long and challenging but majestic as it winds through
beautiful tall trees. Once you finish No. 11, the holes becomes
shorter and you need to practise more target golf. And some of
the closing holes offer a fabulous west coast view as you look out

been playing golf for more
than 50 years, writes about
Hogan in his latest book, Ben
Hogan’s Short Game Simplified (Skyhorse Publishing).
And we’ve got five copies we’d

Hunt’s look at Hogan’s short
game is comprehensive, from
his spectacular putting game
to the chipping, bunker shots
and much more. Included are
drills and exercises you can
do to emulate Hogan, lots of
photos and tips.
“In the hopes of persuading
you to give Hogan’s short
game system an honest try, I
will get into the good stuff as
quickly as possible,” writes
Hunt. “But you have to know
that Ben Hogan is not a ‘quick
fix’ kind of guy, and the ‘engine room’ of his golf swing
— and the ‘secret’ within it —
should be put in a context to
be best understood.
“A lot of golfers don’t have
the patience to give Hogan a
week’s work, even when they
have heard that touring professionals spnend months on
a swing change -- but if you
have just one week’s worth
of patience, you can change
your game significantly.”
One of Hunt’s suggestions,
gleaned straight from Hogan’s
game, is a beauty. “Learn and
ingrain Hogan’s Magical Device with a simple psych-lab
formula: Take 30 short putts
per day from six feet, and 30
short chips per day from 15
feet. Keep it up for one week
and amaze yourself. The
downside is that you will earn
the jealous enmity of your
friends -- who probably liked
you only because you kept
losing to them anyway. Hogan
had something very close
to this laboratory-proven
method by simply advising:
‘Practise with the Magical Device for 15 minutes per day for
seven days, and you’ve got it.’”
