Recognized as one of the most extraordinary shock innovators in the world
It’s been said that ordinary people can do extraordinary
things when they apply their God given talents. Jeff Ryan is
an ordinary guy, who today is recognized as one of the most
extraordinary shock innovators in the world. But he didn’t
travel a traditional path. His knowledge for shocks wasn’t
learned in a college classroom or out of text book. His life
of suspension started out simply as a kid with a love for
motocross and a mind for machines. His path through
motorsports has been a journey around the world, where
he worked with legendary racers, while quietly becoming
a shock building legend himself. Jeff Ryan’s pioneering
technologies have supported championship teams from
Formula 1 in Europe to the depths of Baja in off-road racing
to stock car racing’s highest levels of NASCAR.

A California kid with racing dreams
It was 1979 and Jeff Ryan was a young high school senior
from Campbell, California just outside of San Jose. He lived
for riding dirt bikes and motocross racing. While most of his
classmates were looking to move onto college and develop
defined career paths, Jeff Ryan was going to work as a
general assembler for legendary shock innovator, Bob Fox.
Ryan was one of the first 10 employees at Fox Shocks, in a time
when suspension technology was just taking to the track.

JRi has developed a tool that redefines the current SC/07
damper adjustment mechanism. For the last decade,
adjustments have been made through an adjustable bleed

and built the MC/08 Drag Shock. The MC/08 is the lightest and most consistent

“I met up with the guys from JRi out at Dunefest and they wanted me
to try their setup on a Wildcat. First part of the run had a long whooped
out section, I was able to run the Cat wide open through the whoops
and the car stayed level and sucked them all up. I started moving left
and right through the whoop section to see if I could upset the Cat, the
torsional stability was amazing, she stayed level and went right where I
pointed it. One of things that's really important in the dunes is the body
roll - torsional stability. A lot of shocks that are setup to handle whoop

JRi ADVANTAGE
From the onset of the hydraulic design platform JRi
set performance goals in six particular areas which
define highly important ingredients of the total
hydraulic package. This required three specific testing
dynamometers to look at these areas much more
closely. Each component was designed and tested
individually comparing the results to existing
competitor’s shock absorbers. JRi set an internal
goal of 10-20% improvement in performance based
on existing standards. Data will illustrate from each
of these individual 10-20% segment gains resulted
in a 30-50% increase in performance when all
components were correctively integrated as
one assembly.

CAS-VP
The JRi CAS-VP Shock is utilized by all major auto
manufacturers and some of the best race teams in the
world. The CAS-VP is a fully active shock with infinite
damping capabilities. Utilizing McLaren software, the
CAS-VP will virtually run itself during track or 7-post
testing. The CAS-VP will record position, velocity, load,
pressure, and temperature and change damping
characteristics based on programming. The CAS-VP is
a twin tube shock and meters fluid flow which bypasses
the piston. It can be upgraded to a high speed
compression and rebound adjustable shaft to make
it a true 4-way active damper. The CAS-VP will save
valuable time and money by exponentially reducing
testing and revalve times.

A modern racing shock absorber is made up of
individual components that are controlling flow,
pressure relief, frequency response, cavitation

Using technology developed in open wheel racing,
JRi has introduced a new Ride Height System unlike
typical systems that operate with air. JRi’s Ride Height
System is hydraulic, working directly upon the
coilover spring. The current air ride systems on the
market are ideal for lowering your car for a show, but
come with deficiencies: air is inconsistent, changes
dramatically with temperature, and affects handling
performance. Another disadvantage in using airassisted ride height is the negative impact on
airbags. The risks of dry rot, busted seals, and
leaks increase.

With the purchase of a new state-of-the-art 70,000+
square foot facility, JRi Shocks acquired a Dynojet
chassis dyno. Dynojet Model 248x Dynamometer
allows you to quickly and accurately diagnose
performance problems. By simulating the best
"seat-of-the-pants" road testing right in the shop,
problems are easily diagnosed in a fraction of the
time. Dynojet has teamed its industry standard
chassis dyno with a 4-post lift. Now you can make
changes to exhaust, gears, drive shafts and other
drivetrain modifications right on the dyno. This
greatly reduces the time in troubleshooting and
R&D projects.
JRi sends the best suspension tuners in the business
from their Mooresville facility to support competitors
at various events every weekend from coast to coast.
Regardless of the event, from Goodguys to IMCA and
everything in between, JRi’s highly skilled technicians
provide on-site tuning and revalving services from
one of our three service vehicles. Each service vehicle
is a new Mercedes Sprinter Van, up fitted with a 5hp
Roehrig dyno and a complete mobile rebuild/revalve
station, along with repair parts and a full line of shock
and spring inventory available to purchase at the event.
In-house dynos include two 5HP (in support
vehicles), three 10HP, two 30HP sinusoidal
dynos and one 2k EMA variable waveform
dyno. JRi also has the ability to test
motocross and off-road shocks with a 6k
EMA variable waveform dyno, which will
provide velocity inputs of over 150 in/sec.
JRi is also available for private tests at a nominal fee.
This fee typically includes a “per day” rate along with
travel expenses.
