Football in WA

Plenty of TALENT ON SHOW
IS IT any wonder the AFL clubs are looking towards the WAFL for
recruits each year – in increasing numbers?
A lot of the youngsters that are being selected are not only coming
from strong under-18 campaigns, but many have also got more than a
handful of senior games under their belts.
A few last season even played in a grand final and Daniel Rich claimed
his second premiership at league level with Subiaco in 08 before
moving to Brisbane.
Part of the development of these players is the experienced teammates
and opponents they are finding themselves rubbing shoulders with
each week.
In a perfect competition, West Coast and Fremantle will have fully fit
squads and both will have numerous players at WAFL clubs fighting for
form and a place at the next level.
In 2008 however this was not the case, as injury took a major toll and
at times the Eagles, and, to a lesser extent, the Dockers, were forced to
fast-track several youngsters. A few got tastes of AFL footy a little earlier
than they may otherwise have done.
And while that obviously drained the WAFL of some of its stars and
drawcards, there was still plenty of experience to be pit against.
This year is no different, but hopefully without the injuries to Eagles
and Dockers.
Each WAFL side also has a number of former AFL-listed players on their
squads.
It would appear as though this number is increasing each season too,
where in the past the SANFL and VFL were more attractive offers.
Not only are some returning home after being delisted, but a few more
are being attracted to the West.
A look this season also will see a few veterans, like Peter Bell and Jeff
Farmer, joining the likes of Troy Cook, back at their clubs rather than
retiring.
This is great for the spectators – crowd figures are already on the up –
and it’s fantastic for 17 year-old kids who are trying to be a part of the
next wave to be drafted.
Some will argue that these players have had their chance and are
keeping a young player out of a league spot.
I would say that the majority of those people are not at a ground today
watching a WAFL game.
The WAFL is a feeder competition to the AFL, no doubt, but it is not an
under-18s competition like that being run in the east.
It is surely a benefit for the club and developing young midfielders at
Claremont to have Luke Blackwell and Ryan Jackson, fresh from stints
at Carlton, to learn from.
And how much will key position players looking at taking the next step
get a kick out of training alongside Paul Lindsay and Courtney Johns
at East Fremantle? Not to mention under the tutorage of Brownlow
medallist Shane Woewodin.
Farmer kicked 483 AFL goals and Bell 250. I know who I would be trying
to run with at training at Fremantle Oval each night.
A look through the nine WAFL clubs makes impressive reading of AFL
experience. Some enjoyed extensive careers, others, for one reason or
another, played only a handful of games.
But all have benefitted from their time at the elite level and have
something to offer our competition.
There is a clear pathway there to the AFL for the kids that are good
enough.
In the coaching ranks also, three others join Woewodin at senior level
after AFL careers – Scott Watters, Chris Waterman and Andrew Jarman.
Watters is also the state coach who is searching around for players to
make up the WA squad to play South Australia this season. It would be
great to see some of the AFL-experienced crew available for that clash.
It would be great also to get a win back against the Croweaters – it has
been 16 years since that happened.
But until then, sit back and enjoy watching these stars continue to shine
brightly at WAFL level.
I have put together two teams made out of players on WAFL squads
who have AFL experience.
Is there a weekend free during the season where they could play one
another?
Callum Chambers played 66 AFL
games and kicked 41 goals

SUBIACO’S Phil Read came fourth in this award
last year and is off to a good start in 09, picking
up two votes in the Lions win over Claremont.
Members of the media vote 3-2-1 after each game
of the home and away season.
Marc Webb did not attract one vote in 2008 and
already has three.

The Demons get their chance
Peel Thunder v Perth
Rushton Park - Saturday, March 28 (2.15pm)
NEW Perth coach Andrew Jarman and his promising Demons get a chance straight away to show they
are on the improve.
The last time Perth missed Round 1 and debuted in Round 2 was in 2005 when it was belted by Subiaco
– 3.4 (12) to 28.14 (182).
In 2003, Perth also missed a split Round 1 and lost to Swan Districts in Round 2.
And they can show they have improved a bit since pre-season where the Demons lost their only official
clash, also against Peel Thunder 3.10 (28) to 11.9 (75).
It wasn’t a second-string Perth side either, although some of the first-tier players were having their first
run and didn’t stay out for all four quarters.
But excuses gone, there is enough talent for Perth to live up to the expectation of many of its supporters
in 09. Has Jarman had enough time to get it all together?
East Fremantle needed to kick 15 goals last weekend to beat Peel Thunder. Is Perth capable of repeating
the dose?
The Thunder led at every change, but couldn’t hold on for the win against the Sharks.
Returnees Rory O’Brien and Danny Chartres were both very good and Ben Howlett stepped up to lead
from the front.
Heath Black will be better for the run.
The Thunder has a talented midfield and Perth has boosted an already strong engine room in the preseason. This could be a fast-paced encounter.
The availability of AFL players for both teams will play a big role in the outcome of this clash.
Hayden Ballantyne and Brad Ebert will be handy for the Thunder.
Scott Selwood would strengthen the Demons.
Both will see a win as essential.
Interestingly the away side won in all three clashes between the two in 2008.

Swan Districts v Subiaco
Steel Blue Oval - Saturday, March 28 (2.15pm)
THERE are some interesting stats on page 10 regarding players from last year’s Grand Final that
played in Round 1 last weekend.
Swan Districts lifted in front of the 23,199 crowd last September and took the game right up to Subiaco,
but couldn’t hold on.
But the Swans did hold on in the pre-season Grand Final, with newcomer Lewis Jetta and ruckman Llane
Spaanderman starring. They also found 11 goal-scorers, just one less than in the grand final, after their
losses in the draft were expected to cause them troubles.
If a couple of kicks had gone their way last weekend, the Swans could have beaten South Fremantle.
They will need those kicks to go their way to beat Subiaco this week and AFL selections (Adam Hunter
would be handy).
If Subiaco had kicked straight against Claremont, the 0.15 win could have been a lot bigger.
Brad Smith and Phil Read each kicked three behinds and Adam Cockie and Trent Dennis-Lane two.
Both sides played in rain last Friday night and will be in warm weather this weekend.

West Perth v South Fremantle
Arena Joondalup - Saturday, March 28 (2.15pm)
WITH all the talk about South Fremantle over the pre-season, there was no James Clement or Ash Sampi
last weekend (with neither expecting to play this season) and Peter Bell wasn’t suited up either.
And the Bulldogs beat last year’s runner-up, Swan Districts, after a spirited final term.
Newcomers Theo Adams (21 touches) and Jeff Farmer (2.3) had an impact and Bell is expected to play this
week.
Corey Del-olio impressed in his fourth league game with 20 touches and 5.1.
West Perth gave Bill Monaghan a great start to the start of his coaching career, with a narrow win over East
Perth, but not without a few heart-flutters. The Falcons had five youngsters who played their first league
games and a couple of them looked impressive and will gain confidence after the run.
One of them has the surname Bewick – well known at West Perth and he has a twin brother who wasn’t
bad in the twos.
The Bulldogs played in tough wet conditions last Friday – the Falcons played in dry conditions on
Saturday.

THERE has been a bit of excitement surrounding
East Fremantle’s Anthony Kyanga and the
Geraldton product fired in Round 1. He picked up
two votes in this award.
Kyanga had 14 touches, took one mark and kicked
three goals in the Sharks win over Peel Thunder.
On the other side, Thunder’s Athony Morabito was
also good, with 14 touches and a goal.
To qualify, a player must have come through to
the WAFL via the country football system, played
eight games or less at the start of the season and
be aged 21 or under by the end of this home ad
away season.
Votes are cast by the WA Country Football League
with support from the nine WAFL clubs on a 3-2-1
basis each week.
Round 1 – 2 A Kyanga (EF); 1 Harvey Lewis (WP),
A Morabito (PT).
Rising Star
LEWIS Fasolo impressed with his maturity in East
Fremantle’s win over Peel Thunder, picking up 22
touches on debut.
Alex Hutchins 21 touches for East Perth against
West Perth was just as good.
This pair take the early lead in this award.
To qualify a player must have played eight games
or less at the start of the season and be aged 21
years or under at the end of the home and away
season fixtures. AFL rookies are eligible unless

East Perth v East Fremantle
Medibank Stadium - Friday, March 27 (6.30pm)
LAST season it was Round 8 before East Fremantle managed to squeeze out its first win.
Last week it managed to sneak across the line against Peel Thunder.
The Sharks needed someone to help Andrew McCarrey in attack and they found Anthony Kyanga (three
goals). Leith Teakle, who had kicked 46 goals in 108 games previous, also managed three.
But it was Paul Lindsay’s return that was interesting, with 31 hit outs, but only one mark and six
possessions.
East Perth had three more scoring shots than West Perth but lost by seven points. If the game had gone for
another 10 minutes you would think the Royals would have won.
It was hard to tell if the Royals lost narrowly to a West Perth side down on its 08 ability or not.
But it looked as though the Sharks did escape with a win over an improving Peel outfit.

Rodriguez Shield
WHILE Subiaco wasn’t the star of the Rodriguez
Shield tally in the first week of competition, it
wasn’t a bad start to its defence of the title.
But the Lions were outshone by South Fremantle
and West Perth, who did not lose a game at the
weekend – what a start for Bill Monaghan at his
new club.
A win by a league side attracts 10 points, with four
each given for a victory in the reserves and the
colts.
East Perth was the only club, who played in Round
1, not to get on the scoreboard.

SO after just one round of 2009 fixtures Subiaco is on
top of the WAFL ladder.
As the Lions push for an historic fourth consecutive flag,
the other eight sides begin jostling under them for a
chance to knock them off.
The Lions had 16 of their 08 premiership heroes on the
field last Friday night.
Four of those who were missing wont be there all
season – Daniel Rich, Mark Haynes, Chris Hall (Simpson
medallist), Jarrad Schofield.
Greg Broughton has been elevated to Fremantle’s list
and wasn’t allowed to play last week. His pre-season
form has been good and he could find himself at AFL
level a lot quicker than he expected.
As could Adam Cockie, who played against Claremont,
but may also find himself on West Coast’s senior list, as
early as this week.
Allistair Pickett was the other one not to venture out on
the Medibank Stadium wet, but he’ll return soon.
Of the 27 players to debut at WAFL league level last
weekend, two were in Lions colours – Cody Enders and
Chris Phelan.
Both got their chances, Enders grabbing 8 kicks, 2
marks and 1 handball. Phelan had 5 kicks, 3 marks and
4 handballs.
Swan Districts had just 10 of its grand final side on the
park on Friday night when it lost to South Fremantle.
Six of those won’t be back this season – Garth Taylor,
Todd Banfield, Chris Yarran, Shane Beros, Chris Smith
and Jeff Garlett.
Those missing included Clayton Hinkley, Nicholas
Naitanui and Clancee Pearce, on AFL lists. Michael
Johnson, Josh Pullman and Paul Richardson will all push
for senior selection soon.
The Swans also debuted two youngsters last weekend –
Lewis Jetta and Steven Potente.
Jetta followed his best afield performance in the preseason premiership side, with 11 touches against the
Bulldogs. Potente gathered 7 touches and took 2 marks.
West Perth and East Fremantle each gave five youngsters
their first taste at senior football, while East Perth,
Claremont and Peel Thunder each had four first-gamers.
South Fremantle had only Nathan Street on debut, who
gathered 9 possessions and took 2 marks.
• West Perth – Mitch Andrews (2k, 4h); Rohan Bewick
(10k, 6h, 6m); Matt Green (8k, 3h, 2m); Tim Guatta
(14k, 3h, 8m); Lewis Harvey (8k, 5h, 3m).
• East Fremantle – Conor Davidson (19k, 7h, 7m); Lewis
Fasolo (10k, 12h, 6m); Selby Lee-Steere (5k, 8h, 3m);

Umpires break new ground
Daryl Sinclair WAFL High Performance Umpire Coach
Field
Umpire
Jeff
Dalgleish
became
the sixth Western
Australian umpire to
join the 2009 AFL list
last week.
Dalgleish joins Dean
Margetts, Craig Hendrie,
Luke Farmer, Todd
Keating
and
Brett
Rosebury (now based
in Melbourne) on the AFL list in a first for WA
Umpiring.
The AFL list now has three umpires from the
East Fremantle district (Dalgleish, Keating, and
Farmer) which is a credit to the East Fremantle
District Football Development Council (DFDC).
The junior umpire system and structure
that has been established at East Fremantle
together with the umpire coaching expertise
has been instrumental in the success we are
having not only at AFL level but also at WAFL.
People like Steve Nugent, Troy Kirkham and
Russell Masters continually promote umpiring
and I thank them for their continual support.
Ross Capes Medalist
Chris Pattinson topped of a very good preseason by winning the Capes Medal for the
best pre-season field umpire. Capes, one
of the past greats in
umpiring, paid tribute
to Pattinson’s strong
umpiring during the pre
season.
Ron Hall Medal
Jace Collingridge was
a worthy winner of the
Ron Hall Medal after
a great pre-season.
Collingridge
has
d
developed
into a quality boundary rider and
t
there
is no doubt if he continues to work hard
he will become a regular league umpire.
M Rose Medal
Merv
David Shawcross, after
cconsidering retirement
in the off season when
d
delisted from the AFL
panel, is a great story for
tthe inexperienced goal
umpiring team.
Shawcross
resumed
training in November
with the clear intent of
being the leading flag
waver in 2009. His training and professionalism
has been outstanding and the umpiring
fraternity is hopeful that many of the young
flag wavers will see the way David prepares
himself to be the best he can be.
The first round of fixtures produced great
games of footy and the umpire’s performances
were of a high standard. The umpires in general
terms let the game flow and the bloke with his
head over the footy was protected.
Brett Dalgleish
Today, Brett Dalgleish will
umpire his 50th League
game on the boundary.
Dalgleish, who joined
tthe WAFL team in 2005,
has enjoyed a meteoric
rise to league footy and
w
we congratulate him on
tthis milestone.

CLUB NOTES
Country football
International flavour
for country football
THE West Australian Country Football League
will welcome four United States recruits
to the competition this season as part of a
unique program to promote football in one
of the biggest sporting markets in the world.
The popularity of Australian Rules was evident
at last year’s US AFL Nationals in Colorado
Springs, where 1000 players, officials and
support staff competed at the United States
Airforce Academy Athletic Fields.
Now four players that starred at the Nationals
are preparing to pull on their boots in country
WA this season to experience the game at
grassroots level and take their knowledge
back to the States.
Andrew Werner and Brent Mergen, who were
teammates at the Minnesota Freeze last year,
will both head to the Great Southern Football
League, while Brady Phillips from Kansas
will play for Donnybrook in the South West
Football League and Florida’s Cam Freeman
will line up for Manjimup in the Lower South
West Football League.
Werner, who has a brother in Australia also
pursuing his sporting dream as a basketball
player, had his first taste of Australian Rules
while visiting his sibling in Melbourne last
year.
“My parents and I came over to visit last
year and went and watched a Geelong and
Collingwood game,” he said.
“I loved it and knew of friends back in the
States that were already playing so when I got
back I joined up with the Freeze. I’d played
rugby union for about four years before that
and grew up as a punter in gridiron so the
transition wasn’t too hard.
“I also like playing basketball and soccer and
found Aussie Rules combined all of the sports
I love. I think playing it in Australia is going to
be an incredible experience.”
Werner will play for the Mount Barker Bulls
this season, while his former Freeze teammate
Brent Mergen, will pull on a Denmark Giants
jumper. Both are looking forward to the
possibility of lining up on each other when the
two teams clash.
Mergen, who was an inaugural “Yankeroo”
when on exchange at Fremantle’s Notre
Dame University, is also looking forward to
the chance of playing country football on his
return to Australia.
“I was studying here for a semester when I got
involved with the Yankeroos and the chance to
come back to Australia and play in the country
is something I’m really excited about,” he said.
“I’m not quite sure where I’ll fit in but I’m sure it will be
a great experience. It will be exciting to help spread
the word about Aussie Rules internationally and it’ll
be interesting to see what kind of impact we can have
when we get back to the States.”
Mergen said the free-flowing, action packed nature of
football were aspects of the game he loved, as well as
the full contact.
“It’s just a great game to watch and play, which is why I
think it can take off in the States,” he said.
WA Country Football League general manager Cameron
Knapton said he was great to see four US players arriving
in Western Australia to kick-start the program and hoped
it would lead to an ongoing partnership.
“It’s excellent to see four of them over here to play
football and I’m looking forward to this concept
exposing more young Americans to our great game,” Mr
Knapton said.
Americans Andrew Werner, left and Brent Mergen, get the chance to
play Aussie Rules in WA’s country football league competitions.

Competition closer than
ever as season nears
By Andrea Damonse
The West Australian Amateur Football League kicks off in three
weeks with, the competition promising to be stronger than ever after
the relegation and promotion of teams.
New additions to A-Grade are 2008 B-Grade grand finalists Fremantle
CBC and Collegians.
Wembley and Scarborough have been moved back to B-Grade after
finishing in the bottom two of A-Grade last year.
Collegians will be looking to cap off a premiership winning 2008
campaign in B-Grade with another flag to add to its 1982 Sandover
Shield.
Runner up, Fremantle CBC, is no strangers to A-Grade, having won
its first flag in 1967 and its most recent in 2002, the same year that it
achieved the rare feat of league, reserve and colts premierships.
2008 A-Grade premier North Beach will be chasing its sixth consecutive
and 12th overall Sandover Shield, to put it three flags shy of becoming
the most successful club in WAAFL A Grade history.
Hot on their heels however will be fellow 2008 grand finalists and minor
premier North Fremantle, who is still hungry for its ninth premiership
after a narrow seven-point loss to the Tigers at Medibank Stadium in 08.
University will want to build on a successful 2008 season by reaching
the finals for the first time in over 10 years after narrowly missing out
on percentage points last year.
The most successful club in the WAAFL, University has won 70
premierships in 80 years across different divisions including 15 Sandover
Shields, having won its first in 1929.
The 2009 season for all WAAFL grades commences Saturday, April 18.

NARKLE RETURNS TO EAGLES
West Coast has announced former player Phil Narkle as its new
indigenous liaison officer.
Narkle will join the Eagles in early April.
He was an inaugural member of the Eagles squad and played in the
club’s first game, against Richmond in 1987. He has been
employed by the club on a part-time basis for the past couple of years
scouting WAFL games.
As the club’s indigenous liaison officer, Narkle will work closely with
members of the player development team, as well as the
club’s recruiting staff, community staff and the David Wirrpanda
Foundation.
“Phil will be one of the very few indigenous officers working in
AFL clubs,” said Eagles general manager football operations Neale
Daniher.
“His broad experience and unique skills set will be of great benefit to
what is a very specialised role at West Coast. We are looking forward
to his contribution.”

News from the Dockers
AFL ROUND 1 FREMANTLE V WESTERN BULLDOGS
Subiaco Oval, Sunday, March 29, 4.10pm
NEW NO.1
Golfer Nick O’Hern is Fremantle’s No.1 Ticket Holder for 2009.
The Perth-born Tour Professional, who is the only golfer to have beaten
Tiger Woods twice in match play, has supported Fremantle since the
club’s inaugural 1995 season.
The 37-year-old, who has been a full time member of the US PGA Tour since
2006 – the same year he won the Australian PGA Championship – takes
over the mantle of No.1 Ticket Holder from former NBA star Luc Longley.
O’Hern said he had no hesitation in accepting the status when the offer
was first put to him.
“I felt very honoured to have been given the opportunity,” he said. “I’m
looking forward to becoming more involved with the club and assisting
Fremantle in any way possible to have their best year to date.”
Not surprisingly, there is a golfing link as to why Matthew Pavlich is
O’Hern’s favourite Fremantle player.
“I’ve always admired Matthew and the way he plays the game,” he said.
“Obviously, he’s hugely talented, but that doesn’t mean much if you
don’t have the work ethic, and he excels in that area. He plays a bit of
golf, so I’d be keen to see if I can out drive the big fella!
“I’m excited about the year ahead.
“I think Fremantle have a great core group of players…there are some
quality young guys coming through the ranks and Mark Harvey seems
a good fit for the team. He is a hard nosed coach who is willing to back
his players fully and give his all for the club. I know they lost a few games
down to the wire last season but that experience will put them in good
stead to close out games better this year.”

CLUB NOTES
The football word CONTINUES TO SPREAD
THE Community Multicultural Football Carnival at Fremantle Oval
last week has been hailed a huge success, with 458 school students
and teachers from more than a dozen countries participating.
Organised as part of Harmony Week celebrations, in conjunction
with the Office of Multicultural Interests, the West Australian Football
Commission, Centrelink, the Department of Sport and Recreation and
the South Fremantle Football Club, the carnival welcomed 14 schools,
from a range of nationalities, who participate in modified games and
activities.
Some of the countries represented included Afghanistan, Argentina,
Bangladesh, Burma, China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Papua New
Guinea, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Sudan, as well as Australia
The carnival was attended by special guests, including AFL legend Kevin
Sheedy, Fremantle Docker Stephen Hill, East Fremantle coach Shane
Woewodin ad South Fremantle players Peter Bell and Paul Mugambwe.
Department of Sport and Recreation director general and WA
footballing great Ron Alexander was also there.
As well as football games for students, live music from Multicultural
Arts WA Kulcha band Dunumba kept the participants warm with
some spirited drumming and dancing, while a bouncy castle and
face-painting, as well as a Halal barbecue with vegetarian options
coordinated by Christian Brothers College, were on hand.
Clontarf umpires officiated while sharing their football knowledge
with students who were new to the game, while Nick Hatzoglou,
representing the AFL, offered to supply all participants with a football
to continue their involvement in the game.
Centrelink emphasised the importance of “turning classmates into
teammates” on the day and teachers commented that students had
learnt how sport could bring people together.
Each school received a plaque to acknowledge their involvement and
effort in getting the students to Fremantle Oval, while students will also
receive a participation certificate with photos from the day in coming
weeks.
The carnival aimed to strengthen community ties and enhance
football as an all-encompassing, multicultural sport by strengthening
important community values such as fair play, respect, teamwork, living
in harmony, and leadership.
WAFC director of football Grant Dorrington encouraged players from all
backgrounds and levels to get involved in Australia’s inclusive national
game.
“With the Community Multicultural Program, we see football being
used as a link for young people and families from across the globe to
participate in local football clubs and play structured football on the
weekend,” he said.
“We encourage people from non traditional football communities to
get involved with our national sport and to those who are new to our
great game, we say welcome.”
Alexander said sport was a wonderful way to enjoy life, stay healthy
and build stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities.
“I can say from personal experience that football achieves all of these
things and more. I can think of no better way to integrate into the
Aussie way of life than becoming a part of a football club. Nothing
breaks down racial and cultural barriers better than being part of a
multi-cultural sports team,” he said.
Centrelink Manager, Jan Lipiec said Centrelink’s network of Multicultural
Service Officers provided the vital link between multicultural community
groups and football clubs.
“Many newly-arrived migrants and refugees tend to stay within their own
cultural groups so it is important to encourage participation in programs
that aim to break down language and cultural barriers,” she said.
Former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy
passes the word about AFL football as
the competition's ambassador.

WAFL kicks off with a record
WAFL opening rounds have consisted of four games for 80 seasons,
with 24 of those producing aggregate margins of less than 100 points.
Of those, only three opening rounds have produced less than last
weekend’s total of 47 points.
Along with the 1973 total of 35 points, 1960’s opening round saw
combined margins tally 42 points after a draw between West Perth and
Perth, six-point margin between Claremont and Swan Districts, nine
points separating South Fremantle and East Fremantle, and a 27 points
deciding East Perth’s clash with Subiaco.
The lowest aggregate margin on record for round one is 30 points,
which came on the opening weekend of the 1908 season. Results for
that round included a draw between Subiaco and Midland Junction,
two seven-point results and a 16-point margin.
THE WAFL kicked off with the closest opening round since 1973 when
all four games were won by less than three goals each at the weekend,
signalling a highly entertaining season ahead.
The combined Round 1 winning margin for South Fremantle (17
points), Subiaco (15 points), East Fremantle (8 points) and West Perth
(7 points) totalled just 47 points, which was the lowest for an opening
round consisting of four games since the 1973 total of 35 points.
That round included a one-point win to East Fremantle over South
Fremantle and 10-point win to East Perth against West Perth, while
Perth and Claremont were separated by two points and Subiaco and
Swans produced a 22-point margin.
Program marks a MILESTONE
introducing teachers to the concept,
including cross-curricular activities
incorporating football into literacy and
numeracy.
The new ambassadors were also
presented with educational resources,
footballs, portable goal posts, and an
AFL School Ambassadors kit, while also
being offered support from the West
Australian Football Commission.
General Manager, WAFC Development
and Education, Colin West congratulated
all of the teachers on becoming new AFL
School Ambassadors and said it was
great to see the program growing.
“These are teachers who are passionate
about their Australian football. They
commit to actively and positively
promoting our great game in their
school,” Mr West said.
“This leads to enhanced fitness, health,
physical skills and well being among
students and teachers have reported
that male students in particular are more
actively involved in classroom activities.
“Overall, it is a strong, sustainable
and mutually beneficial partnership
between the Education Department and
the WAFC.”
800th AFL School Ambassador
inducted
THE highly successful AFL School
Ambassador program notched up
another milestone last week when the
800th Western Australian teacher was
inducted at Subiaco Oval.
A total of 96 teachers became new AFL
School Ambassadors on Tuesday, March
17, with Melville Primary School’s Glen
McIntosh the 800th teacher to join the
team in WA.
Legendary AFL coach Kevin Sheedy and
West Coast Eagle Adam Selwood were
on hand to congratulate Mr McIntosh, as
well as inspire teachers to promote our
great Australian game.
The new AFL School Ambassadors joined
754 other WA teachers, who are already
part of the program, designed to create a
mutually beneficial partnership between
the WA Department of Education
and Training and the WA Football
Commission.
The main aim is to ensure that Australian
Rules Football becomes a medium by
which all girls and boys are engaged in
safe and well organised physical activity
and academic achievement.
The induction day for new ambassadors
also included sessions with West
Australian Football Commission staff,
Melville Primary School’s Glen McIntosh is
congratulated by AFL legend Kevin Sheedy on
becoming the 800th teacher to join the AFL School
Ambassador program.
Crashes can happen anywhere at anytime.
There’s no excuse.
