ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH September 4, 2016 LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Lily Pads or a Rock Foundation Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s, Jesus emphasizes in the gospel today where our focus and priority must be if we are truly to become his intentional disciples: “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” Intentional disciples structure their lives built on the Lord and his will for us. Intentional disciples understand the cost and willingly surrender to Jesus as the top priority and measure of their lives. Some people are not well focused on the Lord. Instead of choosing the firm foundation of the Lord’s will for their lives, they seem to prefer lily pads as their foundation, jumping from one thing to another with no real priority, firmness or direction. In contrast, true disciples structure their lives, not based on self-interest or feelings, but rooted in God’s will and grace. By embracing God’s will - that is, their cross - and denial of self, true disciples structure their lives and priorities with the Lord being FIRST. How wonderful then, that in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, today Pope Francis canonizes the small Albanian woman, Agnes Bojaxhiu, better known to the world as Blessed Mother Teresa. In Saint Teresa of Calcutta, we and all of the world have a contemporary who was a living example of Mercy-inAction. Saint Teresa of Calcutta also demonstrates for us what Intentional Discipleship looks like, for she was not a social worker or activist, but rather a faithful disciple of the Lord Jesus who, due to her love and devotion to the Lord, reached out in love to the poorest of the poor. For each of us, Mother Teresa’s observation properly focuses our efforts at Intentional Discipleship: “God has not called me to be successful; He has called me to be faithful.” Whether it is in our own efforts to grow in holiness or our outreach to our neighbors and people in the community, our labors to cultivate in our children a lively faith relationship with God or our involvement in parish ministries, God calls us to be faithful to his will; He provides the rest - the harvest. Encouraging family or friends who lack Baptism, Confirmation or Holy Communion to participate in The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and accompanying them in this process. RCIA begins on Monday, September 12th; Sunday morning faith sharing in Tipitina’s following the 8:00 AM Mass each Sunday; A weekly faith sharing group focused on the Works of Mercy to be led by Fr. Sebastian; Assisting with the next Community Meal at St. Mary’s on Friday, September 30th; Let us labor together for the LORD. In the Peace of Christ, Fr. Allan F. SPIRITUAL INSIGHT - Parking as an Opportunity for Grace: In this Year of Mercy, please consider your choice of parking for Mass as an opportunity to show kindness and mercy to others. Much room is available each Sunday in the driveway around the church - but it requires patience. Space in the school lot allows elderly parishioners closer spaces to park - but it requires a few more steps. Refraining from parking in front of neighbors' houses and on the church sidewalk demonstrates thoughtfulness for others - but it requires extra effort. All of these options multiply grace for you and for others. ST.
