Congratulations on nearing the end of the academic year. Before you break for a welldeserved holiday, I wanted to provide you with some updates from our national team.
Summer Leadership Institute, Shawnigan Lake School
We are really excited about the two new programs this summer – “Money and
Managing Change” for Heads only and “The Next Step” for current administrators. David
Hadden, David Robertson and Barry Wright have prepared an excellent program for
these new specialized opportunities. The regular line-up of modules also promises to
provide another summer of inspiration and valuable learning with like-minded
colleagues.
In our ongoing commitment to celebrate leaders across the country and inspire others
to pursue leadership positions, we are also looking forward to the New Leaders Address
by two LI Alum: Martha Perry, Head of St. Clement’s School, and Marc Ayotte, Head of
Hillfield Strathallan; and to the Art of Leadership Address by CAIS leaders who have
been nominated by their peers: Pat Dawson, Head of Crofton House School, and
Rodger Wright, Head of Collingwood School. Everyone is welcome to attend those
evening dinners and presentation. Registration for the Next Step program is closed, but

Our web presence continues to evolve. More than 35,000 people visit our website each
month; our Careers page surpassed 100,000 hits in one month this spring; our School
Directory is our third most popular hit which means we are driving traffic from our site to
your schools' sites. The “KeeNote” (http://www.cais.ca/page.cfm?p=440) has climbed
to be one of the most popular hits from our main page; and we have visitors from over
100 countries.
In less than one year, we have reached our goal to become a hub of information
providing the latest resources, news and opportunities in education. We update our
website weekly - often daily! - so please continue to check-in with CAIS regularly.

Student Leadership Conference, Sacred Heart School of Halifax
130 CAIS students from across the country gathered in Nova Scotia for the annual “For students, by
students” CAIS Leadership Conference, and participated in workshops, service projects, and
community work while polishing some leadership skills.
We are proud to announce that this year, students and staff also benefited from our strategic
partnership with the Rotman School of Management’s Integrative Thinking concepts.
Thank you to Patricia Donnelly, Head of Sacred Heart School of Halifax, and to Mrs. Tamara
Drummond, the faculty advisor to the student team for providing a fantastic opportunity for students
to billet and learn with new friends – this year over three quarters of the students had never been to
Nova Scotia!
Please save the date for next year’s conference at Selwyn House in Montreal from April 17-21.
National Tracking Project Think Tank, Havergal College
As we embrace new approaches to teaching and learning, CAIS encourages all schools to be
strategic and track the success of their alum in university. The NTP began five years ago, and we are
at a necessary stage of review for the project. We have identified the schools that have been most
active in the NTP and have organized a Think Tank meeting on Wednesday, June 15 to share what is
working and to make improvements. Results from the privacy analysis will be presented. All CAIS
Schools are invited to attend. Kim is also organizing a BC meeting in July. Please contact Kim TullochWynn for details: ntp@cais.ca.
Boarding School Summit, Appleby College
On May 16, twenty-three boarding schools came together on the Appleby campus to preview
strategies and provide feedback for the Collaborative Boarding Project. We were pleased that 20
others joined us through live-streaming.
The day included presentations on:

Market research from Harris Decima Chairman, Allan Gregg;
Recruitment, agent, marketing and website progress from the Management Team; and,
Synergies with our strategic partners from TABS and DFAIT.
Boarding schools will be contacted about our summer research project this month, and we are
excited to be revising our marketing and confirming our recruitment strategies.

CAIS Governance – We need strong and strategic people!
We have been able to accomplish a lot in the past couple of years thanks to the commitment of
many volunteers. In order to stay on track with our strategic goals for next year, we need your
support. Please consider nominating someone (or yourself!) to one of the following new committees
by the end of the month:
1. National Professional Development Steering Committee
Chaired by Kim Magee, retired Head of BSS.
Mandate:
To provide oversight while preserving the autonomy of the various leadership groups to ensure quality
control, high standards, collaborative agenda and budget processes, development of website
resources and corporate sponsorship support; and to ensure the Professional Development program is
managed according to budget.
Membership:
a) The National PD Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from each of the
CAIS-­‐member groups that currently organize a conference including: Business Officers, Junior
School, Assistant Heads, Admissions, Advancement, Heads & Chairs, and at least one CAIS
Board member.
b) The Steering Committee will have regional representation and include representatives from
different kinds of CAIS member schools.
2. Collaborative Boarding Project Steering Committee
Chaired by Guy McLean, Head of Appleby College.
Mandate:
To provide strategic counsel to and oversight of the marketing, recruiting and communication for the
Collaborative Boarding Project and ensure the project is managed according to budget.
Membership:
+ Three Heads (including one CAIS Board member; regional differences)
+ Three Chairs (regional differences)
+ Two Admission Directors
+ Two Marketing/Communications Directors
+ One independent member
3. National Student Activities Task Force
A pillar for CAIS is a vibrant national student activities program including athletics and student
leadership. The National Tournament Task Force, Chaired by Rodger Wright, is wrapping up its
comprehensive review with a report to the CAIS Board in September and a presentation at the CAIS
AGM. A team has also made recommendations on the annual Student Leadership Conference. This
Task Force will focus on the implementation of both sets of recommendations to ensure our future
student leadership offerings are strong.

Significant work has been accomplished by two National Task Forces this year, and Draft
Policies, Procedures and Recommendations will be presented to the CAIS Board in September
and to Heads and Chairs at the Annual General Meeting in October.
