Jemison Park (Mountain Brook Parkway)
A 54-acre area designed for preservation as a green way, the
trail at Jemison Park is used for walking, jogging, reading,
bird watching, and enjoying a picnic. Visitors are able to
relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature while they
stroll along Shades Creek. Owls, hawks, raccoons, and fox
are among the animals residing in the area, along with
abundant native plant species. The natural beauty of the
area makes Jemison Park one of the most popular walking
attractions in Mountain Brook. The one-mile trail connects
with the Nature Trail and the Watkins Trace Trail and ties
in with the City’s sidewalk system, allowing residents easy
access to the park.
Nature Trail
On the east end of the
Jemison Park sidewalk is
the Nature Trail which
is 6/10 of a mile and
runs parallel with
Overbrook Road. The
gravel path is
surrounded by greenery
and overlooks Shades
Creek.
Watkins Trace Trail
On the west and north
end of Jemison Park is
the Watkins Trace
Trail which is 4/10 of a
mile and runs parallel
with Cahaba Road.
The trail winds
peacefully towards
Mountain Brook
Elementary before
connecting with the
City’s sidewalks.
Irondale Furnace
(Stone River Road)
The Irondale blast furnace is
steeped in local history, dating
back to the Civil War, but today
the location consists of a
tranquil walking trail leading to
the site where the furnace once
stood. The foundation was
recently restored, and plaques
tell the story of the facility that
once occupied over 2,000 acres.
Benches are available in the
open grove and provide a
peaceful respite in the wooded
area. Dog stations are available
on site, so residents are
encouraged to bring the family
pets and enjoy the beauty of this
natural park.
Overton Park
(3020 Overton Road)
Overton Park offers something
for every member of the family.
A large playground area is perfect
for children, while a brick
walking path gives parents a
chance to exercise. A beautiful
lawn area offers opportunities for
a picnic, and a pavilion is
available to rent for birthday
parties or other celebrations.
Grilling is not allowed in the
park.
In addition to the park area,
tennis and basketball courts are
also available for public use.
Residents are asked to be
courteous and limit playing time
to one hour when others are
waiting for a court.
Crestline Tot Lot
(Church Street and West Jackson)
The Tot Lot, located in the heart of Crestline Village,
consists of play equipment designed primarily for
young children. The park is completely fenced,
allowing children to safely enjoy the swings and
other equipment, while their parents relax at the
picnic tables available. Parking is available in the
adjacent alley, with additional parking found across
Church Street along Jackson Boulevard by Crestline
Elementary. Dogs are not allowed in the Tot Lot.
Canterbury Park
(Canterbury Road and
Overhill Road)
Located just off Montevallo
Road, Canterbury Park
consists of a small
playground area that is a
great place for young
children to play. Picnic tables
are also found at the park,
providing parents with a
place to sit and talk while
their children enjoy some
fun. This park serves as a
convenient gathering place
for neighbors to get caught
up on news in the
community.
Mountain Brook Presbyterian
Church
(Brookwood Road)
In conjunction with the Mountain Brook Presbyterian
Church, the City of Mountain Brook built a walking
trail around the church property. The trail was built
partially on the easement of the street right of way and
partially on the church property. This trail, which is
0.7 miles long, is open to the public for walking
or jogging.
Mountain Brook Athletic Complex
(Behind Mountain Brook High School)
The City of Mountain Brook is devoted to offering
quality recreational opportunities for all citizens, and
the Athletic Complex provides fields and courts for
children of all ages to participate in various sports. The
area includes six baseball/softball fields, three soccer
fields, six tennis courts, a children’s playground, a
concession stand, and restroom facilities. The complex
stays busy year round with community sporting events
organized by Mountain Brook Athletics (414-3854) and
Mountain Brook Soccer (977-9038).
Rathmell Sports Park
(End of East Street)
The newest area for local athletics, Rathmell Park consists of
6 fields maintained by the Mountain Brook Sports Park
Foundation. A new pavilion housing a concession area and
restroom facilities was recently completed, improving the
experience of enjoying an afternoon soccer or lacrosse game..
The City of Mountain Brook Park and Recreation
Department rents several recreational areas to the
public. Anyone wishing to rent or reserve one or
more of these locations must abide by the rules and

different colored flags will be displayed that indicate

Failure to abide by the flags could result in a fine.
Green Flag - Field is dry and stable enough to
sustain play, practice or games.
Yellow Flag - Field has some wet and dry areas. In
this instance, practice may be held in the drier areas
but no games may be played.
Red Flag - Field has standing water and/or is
considered to be saturated. Due to the instability of
the playing surface, the field is closed to all practice,
games, and play.
Note - Absence of a flag does not automatically mean
the field is playable. Game days will be Red or Green
