come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which
were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having
now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the
Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He rises from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5
After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe
them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter
said unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do
thou know not now; but thou shall know hereafter. 8 Peter said unto him, Thou shall never
wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon
Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus said to
him, He that is washed need not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are
clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all
clean. 12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down
again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord:
and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye
also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do
as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his
lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy
are ye if ye do them. 18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the
scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. 19
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receives whomsoever I send receives me; and he that
receives me receives him that sent me."
The Lord knew his time on earth was ending. This was the last time he would be with all his disciples. What
does John say was on his mind? His love for the disciples. And out of love he taught them one last lesson humility. It should not be surprising that this was an important lesson for the disciples to learn. Jesus said
"loving your neighbor as yourself" was the second greatest command ever. It is second only to loving God
with all that we are. In order to fulfill the mission of spreading the gospel, the disciples would need to learn to
serve. Pride and arrogance would ruin the disciples' relationship to God, to each other, and to the people they
were trying to save. Humility and service to others is the evidence of love.
It's an important lesson for us as well. People line up to do the tasks that are considered important,
glamorous, or respected. But Jesus showed humility by doing the task that no one wanted to do. He washed
the disciples' feet -- a dirty job usually performed by the lowest ranking person in the room. Was Jesus the
lowest ranking person? No. He was Lord and Teacher. He knew he would soon be at the Father's side in
heaven. Did he think it was too lowly a task for him to do? No. Are there tasks that we won't do because they
are lowly? Because they are dirty? Because they are unpleasant or hard? But aren't those the jobs that most
need to be done? And won't God reward those who do His work? We need to be willing to do whatever is
needed. Jesus was not only willing, he prepared himself to do this service. Have we made plans to serve
others?
The disciples had argued in the past about which one of them would be greatest in the kingdom. Jesus had
answered them by saying the greatest people were not the warriors, leaders or heroes. They are like children
who are powerless, obedient and humble. We should not waste our energy worrying about how we compare to
others. It is not our job to judge others for what they do or do not do. It is our responsibility to fill the needs
we see, whatever we are. James 4:17 says "Therefore to him that knows to do good, and doeth it not, to him
it is sin." Look at who all Jesus served. Even Judas, who left that table to betray the Lord, had his feet washed
by Jesus. Jesus put himself in a position of servitude to his own betrayer.
Discussion: What can we do to prepare to serve others? What talents, resources, and services can we
provide?

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And
when they heard it they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray
him. And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to
him, "Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" And he sent two of his disciples,
and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever
he enters, say to the householder, 'The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the
Passover with my disciples?' And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for
us." And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the
Passover. And when it was evening he came with the twelve. And as they were at table eating, Jesus said,
"Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." They began to be sorrowful, and
to say to him one after another, "Is it I?" He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread
into the dish with me. For the Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son
of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." And as they were eating,
he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." And he took
a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, "This
is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the
fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us
prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He said, "Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him, 'The Teacher
says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" And the disciples did as
Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he sat at table with the
twelve disciples; and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." And they
were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?" He answered, "He who has
dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to
that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been
born." Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to him, "You have said so." Now as they were
eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is
my body." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of
you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I
shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's
kingdom."

Which questions were easiest to answer? Why? The breakfast
question about today was easiest because it was more recent.
With the name question, it's easiest to remember the person
you spend the most time with.
When people want to remember something, they keep it close
by, look at it often, put it somewhere where they will see it.
That's the idea of a memorial. We don't want to forget
something, so we remind ourselves of it often.
Jesus knew that if we did not make a point of remembering his
death, it would be easy for us to forget. To get caught up in our
lives and forget his. He told us to be sure and remember his
death, and he told us how. He used the elements of the
Passover feast, which itself was a memorial.

III. DLTK's Bible Activities
Last Supper Keychain
This simple keychain craft reinforces the memory verse from John 6:35.
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he
that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst.
It is a good craft to do at Easter time or when teaching a child about
communion.
1. Materials:
•
self drying clay (you can purchase it or make your own)
IV. Air Dry Clay
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 1/2 tsp. powdered alum
1 1/2 tsp. vegetable oil
boiling water (amount varies depending on your humidity)
food colouring
Combine flour, salt, and alum in a mixing bowl
Add vegetable oil.
Slowly add boiling water, stirring the entire time. Dough should not be sticky.
Break dough into separate portions if desired.
Add food coloring and knead until it is incorporated (your hands may get a bit messy here).
Form into small shapes, vases, bowls, flowers, etc or cut with cookie cutters.
Let dry 48 hours in a warm, breezy location.
OPTIONAL: Paint with clear nailpolish or varnish.
Store for up to a month in an airtight container.

1. Before Craft Discussion:
•
If doing this with a large group of children (ex: Sunday school), consider bringing in two or three different types of
loaves of bread (french bread, crusty bread, pumpernickel, etc) plus some regular sliced bread.
•
You can show the children the different kinds of bread and discuss whether any of them have helped make bread at
home.
•
Talk about how bread is made (mixing ingredients to make dough, kneading, shaping and baking)
•
You can even let the children taste the different types of bread to see which is their favorite
•
If doing this with your own children you can do the same as the above or point out different loaves of bread during a
shopping trip.

have the children shape their dough into a slice or loaf of bread. After viewing the different loaves of real bread the
children should be inspired.

Use a straw to poke a hole through the completed shapes

Cut out a rectangle of white craft foam and punch a hole in the corner of it

THE LAST SUPPER
Every year, the Jews would celebrate the Passover holiday. One Passover evening,
Jesus and all of the disciples ate the Passover meal together. This would be the last
supper that Jesus would have with His disciples. While they were eating, Jesus
looked at His friends and said that one of them would betray Him. To betray means
to tell on a friend. The disciples were sad and said they would never do that. Jesus
said that the man who dipped his bread into the bowl at the same time Jesus did
would betray Him. When Jesus looked at Judas, He said, "Yes, it is you" (NIV).
Then Jesus took some bread and broke it. He said that when they ate the bread,
they should think of His body that would be broken. Then Jesus picked up a cup
filled with red-colored wine. He said that when they drank the wine, they should
think of the blood that He would shed for their sins. When we do this in church
today, we call it Communion.

Discuss what was meant when Peter "denied" Christ. That is, he said in three different situations that he did not know
Christ. Bring in a tape of a rooster crowing. (You may have to be the rooster!) Have the children act out the story, playing
the tape when appropriate. Emphasize Peter's shame.
Give each child a half sheet of blue construction paper. Have them cut a "hill" from brown paper and paste on the sheet of
blue. Write "Calvary" on it. Have them cut three crosses and paste on the hill.

PUZZLE "Crusifixion"
(make up a picture according to the puzzle)
How to work on the Puzzle:
1.
cut out the puzzle along the outer outline;
2.
glue it to a sheet of cardboard;
3.
color the picture, cut it out on the dotted lines and mix up the parts.

II. 3D Cross Paper Craft
This is a cute, simple paper craft that results in a 3D ornament you can
hang around the room.
1. Materials:
printer
paper (I prefer construction paper as it's a bit sturdier)
scissors
OPTIONAL: crayons (or paint, markers, etc)
string, thread, ribbon or wool
2. Instructions:
Print template (there is only B&W available) and color as desired
Cut out the template pieces (may require adult assistance and can be done before hand.
Cut on one of the dotted line right up to the center.
Pick out the two matching cross (this is good practice for young children!)
Slide the cross together, top to bottom
all I have is the snowflake image to show you how it's done
Glue a ribbon or thread onto the top (or hole punch a small hole and tie a ribbon through (I used a thread and
it worked really well)
3. Options:
instead of simply coloring the template, here are some thoughts for alternatives:

Mix together 3 parts flour, 1 part salt, food coloring, and enough water to make a dripping consistency
but not too runny. Use a popsicle stick to drip onto paper shapes. Will dry hard and sparkly.

III. Easter Mobile with Christian Message
This is a simple mobile made up of crosses with John 15:13 in the
center. We usually create our mobiles by using two straws or sticks
taped or tied in a criss-cross or by using one paper towel or gift wrap
roll with all the pieces tied to it (this isn't as 3D a mobile, but is good
for recyclying). See the summer mobile to see what the paper towel
roll mobile looks like
1. Materials:
a printer,
a piece of paper... I always prefer to use a heavy paper (like construction paper), but it isn't necessary.
some crayons, paint, markers or pencil crayons,
scissors,
glue,
straws, sticks or paper towel roll, and
string and yarn.
2. Instructions
Print out the template of choice... there are 2 crosses on template 1 and 2 and the message is on template 3.
You can print out as many as you want to fill up your mobile.
Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template pieces along the dotted lines.
You can colour with sparkle glue if desired or use paint, crayons markers or pastels. New mediums are
always fun for kids.
Fold the crosses in half and glue the back and front together. Let dry.
Poke a small hole in the top of each cross and tie with yarn or string to the mobile you've chosen (straws,
sticks or paper towel roll).
If you're doing a criss cross mobile, we like to cut a big circle of cardboard (cereal
box) or use a paper plate. Poke a hole in the center and string it on top of the criss
cross -- this helps the template pieces balance better (you don't have to worry so
much about the mobile leaning to one side). You can let the kids decorate the
circle/paper plate with paint, markers or stickers.

1. Materials
Large paper plate
Black tempra paint
Brown or grey tempra paint
Brown paper lunch bag (or maybe two)
Scissors
White glue or a stapler
2. Instructions
Take a paper plate and have the children paint or colour the "bottom" (underside) of the plate brown or gray,
and the "top" black.
Put the two halves together and staple or glue the round edges with the black side in.
It should be able to stand up with a space in the middle.
Cut a "doorway" and stick a picture of an angel at the back. You can use pictures from old greeting cards, the
templates at the bottom of this page or if your children are old enough you may want to let them draw their
own angel. The angel template is below. Copy and cut out.
Then we make a stone by crumpling up a paper lunch bag and binding it with masking tape. You can use two
bags or a larger bag if you would like a larger stone.
Then the children can roll the stone away from the door of the cave where Jesus body was laid to find he is
not there, but there is an angel to say he has risen!

Jesus. Have students use a blue paper as a background and cut out and apply a green bottom for grass on a
short end of the paper. Then have them cut out and apply white clouds. Cut out a "tab" for each Jesus. Fold

1. Glue all the craft patterns on cardboard, paint them, and cut them out along the
outer contour alongwith rectangles.
2. On the background of the craft, by dotted lines make horizontal openings for the
figures of apostles and vertical openings for the figure of Christ.

3. Put the figure of Jesus on the background of the craft, its face down;
run the rectangle through the opening of the vertical slat (see Picture 1).
Put some glue on a free side of the rectangle (a shaded section on Picture 1),
bend back and glue up the edges of the figure and the rectangle. Now the
figure of Jesus is put on the slat and can move up and down along the
slat.
4. Glue the leg of the cloud to the travelling figure of
Jesus in places marked with crosses (see Picture 3) so
that the figure of Jesus and the cloud would freely move

ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA
There were many poor people who lived in the city of Jerusalem.
Because of this, Christians would sell pieces of land or even homes
so they could give money to the apostles. The apostles would then
take the money and give it to the poor people. One day a man,
named Ananias, and his wife, Sapphira, sold a piece of their
property for a lot of money. They must have become very selfish
when they saw all of the money. Instead of giving all of it to the
apostles, they decided to keep some of the money for themselves.
They took the rest of the money and gave it to the apostles.
Ananias and Sapphira wanted the apostles to believe that they
were giving all of the money they had received for their property.
The apostles could tell that they were lying. Because they had lied
to God, Ananias and Sapphira died instantly. The other people
learned that they should never lie to God.

Stephen, Faithful in Persecution

The first church that began after Jesus left earth to go to heaven was also known as the "Early Church".
The Early Church appointed seven leaders called deacons, each of whom had been with Jesus during His
entire ministry. Each one demonstrated special giftings, given to them by God to fulfill His plan for the
church. They were men who were full of the Holy Spirit and possessed great wisdom. However, as far
as anyone knows, only two of those first deacons were great preachers. One was named Philip and the
other was named Stephen.
When Stephen preached, many healings and miracles took place just as they did during the time of
Jesus' ministry. At the time Stephen was living in Jerusalem, there were about 460 synagogues, some of
which were built by foreign-born Jews. It was some of these foreign-born Jews who tried to argue with
Stephen, insisting that Jesus was not God. (Acts 6:9) Stephen's wisdom was so great that they lost the
argument. These men were so upset with Stephen that they began to spread the rumour that he was
blaspheming God.
Before long, Stephen was arrested by Jewish religious leaders and brought before their courts. The
foreign-born Jews convinced people to give false testimonies against Stephen. As Stephen stood before
his accusers, his face suddenly began to glow like the face of an angel.
Stephen stood up for his innocence and began to tell how God was with Abraham, Joseph and Moses.
He said that God had promised to send another prophet like Moses. This prophet was Jesus. Stephen
reminded them how their ancestors had rebelled against God. He told the crowd that they were just as
rebellious as their forefathers had been. They were persecuting the prophets, and now they had even
killed the Saviour, the Messiah, whose name was Jesus. When the crowd heard this, their anger was
more than they could control! The Bible says they were so angry that they were grinding their teeth
together.
Suddenly, Stephen looked up towards heaven. He told them that he could see Jesus, the Messiah,
standing at the right hand of God, the Father!
This was more than the crowd could stand! They would not accept the fact that Jesus was God. To them,
Stephen had just committed the ultimate blasphemy! In their eyes, he had spoken lies against God. The
crowd covered their ears, refusing to hear any more from Stephen. (Acts 7:57) They yelled at the top of
their voices, rushed at Stephen and dragged him out of the city and began stoning him to death.
Before Stephen died, he spoke words similar to those that Jesus Himself said as He was dying on the
cross. Stephen said, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Lord, do not hold this sin against them." With that,
Stephen went to be with the Lord.
Stephen faithfully served God in the midst of much hatred and prejudice, even to the point of death.
Because of what Stephen saw, it was obvious that God was fully aware of what was happening to him.
Jesus is always aware of the difficulties we face, but there may be times when God allows us to suffer.
He may do this so those who do not believe will see God's power working in our lives.
It was not easy for Stephen to face death, but he remained faithful to God. God's hand was evident in his
death because if Stephen had not been martyred - killed for his beliefs - other believers who were now

persecuted would not have tried to escape from Jerusalem. Because of this, the Gospel was taken to the
rest of the world.
We all need to be faithful to God even when those who are not Christians give us a hard time. If we are
faithful, we will encourage other believers to be faithful too. Although some things may be difficult to
face, Jesus is very aware of what is happening to them. He promises to be with them, just as He was
with Stephen.

Outline:
I.
Introduction
A. Text: Hebrews 10:23.
1. We live in a day when the trend is toward continual change rather than constant loyalty, toward keeping our options open rather
than making binding commitments.
B. And yet the gospel requires commitment of the highest order - Lk. 9:57-62.
C. We are urged to "count the cost" of discipleship to the Lord - Lk. 14:25-33.
D. When we obey the gospel, seeking the remission of our sins, each step we take must be backed up with genuine
commitment.
II. OBEDIENCE AND COMMITMENT
A. Obedience without commitment is not really obedience. Consider the proper attitude toward obedience in Gal. 2:20.
B. Obedience to the gospel must be "from the heart" (Rom. 6:17). Cf. Eph. 6:6.
C. To "waffle" in our obedience to the gospel is to lose the benefit of having obeyed it - Gal. 1:6; 3:1. Cf. Hb. 3:5,6,12-14;
10:35-39; etc.
D. In the Bible, obedience and commitment always go together - Mt. 6:24. Cf. 12:30.
III. FAITH
A. Saving faith involves a commitment to what we believe - Jas. 2:19,20.
B. When we say that someone has become "unfaithful" to the gospel, we do not just mean that he has ceased to "believe" that
which he previously had "faith" in -- we mean that he has violated his previous pledge to live consistently with what he believed - 2
Tim. 2:13.
1. In 1 Tim. 5:11,12, certain widows who had grown "wanton against Christ" are described as "having condemnation
because they have cast off their first faith."
2. Compare other translations: "because they have been untrue to their first faith" (Lamsa), "because they have set aside their
previous pledge" (NASV), "because they have broken their former promise" (Conybeare).
3. Clearly, our "faith" involves a promise, a commitment.

C. "Infidelity" literally means "unbelief" -- but at the practical level it means a "breaking of faith," a betrayal of trust, a going
back on one's commitment to what he believes.
D. To renege on the commitment of our faith is a most serious thing - 2 Pt. 2:20-22
IV. REPENTANCE
A. Genuine repentance involves a commitment to change our ways - Ac. 26:20.
1. "Repent" -- commit to change.
2. "Turn to God" -- make the change.
3. "Do works befitting repentance" -- maintain the commitment in practice. Cf. 1 Sam. 12:20,21.
B. In the Bible, repentance is more than a mood, more even than the emotional "feeling" of guilt, sorrow, or remorse for our
sins. Even when the sorrow is "godly sorrow," the state of mind is only that which leads to repentance - 2 Cor. 7:10.
C. Repentance is a change of the will which leads to a change of conduct.
1. It is a "turning" - Rev. 2:4,5.
2. Cf. Ezek. 18:23.
D. To be worth anything, our "turning" to God must be resolute - Deut. 30:10. Cf. Josh. 1:7; Joel 2:12; etc.
E. Apologies are useless if they are not backed up by a commitment to change - Mt. 3:7-10.
V. CONFESSION
A. Honest confession involves a commitment to be true to Christ - 1 Tim. 6:12-14.
B. When we "confess" Christ, we make a pledge of faithfulness to that which we acknowledge as our belief.
1. Our confession is not merely an intellectual acknowledgment that Jesus is Lord, but a commitment to accept His
lordship - Col. 2:6.
2. This confession and commitment is made publicly. We place ourselves on record, before witnesses, that we intend to
be true to Christ. Our confession is a public promise of faithfulness, somewhat analogous to the marriage vow.
C. A "martyr" is a "witness" who is willing to die rather than renounce his testimony and be unfaithful to what he has
confessed. Cf. Antipas, the Lord's "faithful martyr" in Rev. 2:13.
D. The New Testament speaks of "obedience" to our confession - 2 Cor. 9:13.
E. We must "hold fast" our confession - Hb. 4:14; 10:23.

VI. BAPTISM
A. Scriptural baptism involves a commitment to walk in newness of life - Rom. 6:2-4.
B. In the New Testament, the "meaning" of baptism is that it is a death to the old life and a resurrection to the new.
Understanding this part of the "purpose" of baptism is no less important than understanding that it is for the remission of
sins!
C. The high "mortality rate" among those baptized perhaps indicates that we have not been teaching the "whole truth" about
baptism. We seem to have stressed truth about the remission of sins more than the truth about the commitment required in
baptism.
D. A scriptural understanding of baptism looks both backward and forward:
1. Backward: the remission of past sins.
2. Forward: a changed life, walking in newness of life.
E. Without a true commitment of the heart, baptism is an empty act.
VII. Conclusion
A. To be "converted" means to turn to God with commitment -- not just to break with the past, but to do so decisively! Cf. Ac.
3:19.
B. Indeed, God asks us to commit ourselves to Him entirely - 2 Tim. 1:12. Cf. 2 Cor. 8:5; 1 Pt. 4:19.
C. It is "foolish" to hear the truth from God and not make any commitment to it - Mt. 7:24-27.
D. How "committed" is your obedience to God?
E. How "resolved" are you to follow the Savior?
