The
Bioactive
Solution TO
Chronic
Inflammation:
Modern
Health Plaque
As a normal, short-lived response, inflammation is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s
a vital part of a healthy immune response. Your body depends on inflammatory
responses as a defense from bacterial and viral invaders and even cancer cells.
Inflammation also helps the body heal from injuries.
For additional information contact:
Inflammation, however, becomes a problem when it is chronic. In fact, chronic,
systemic (throughout the body) inflammation is a primary culprit behind dozens
of today’s most common diseases and conditions ranging from cancer and heart
disease to obesity and diabetes.
What
Triggers
Chronic
Inflammation?
+ Cellular stress
and dysfunction
+ Excessive calorie
consumption
+ Elevated blood
sugar levels
+ Free radical damage
The Inflammation Problem Is
One of Balance
“It is now clear that the
destructive capacity of chronic
inflammation is unprecedented
among physiologic processes.”

As a result of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, our bodies tend to overproduce
inflammatory chemicals. At the same time, we don’t get enough of the
nutrients that naturally reduce inflammation. If you are carrying around a
few extra pounds, your risk of inflammation-related illness is magnified. Fat
cells produce inflammatory chemicals at a rate far greater than other cells.
When you gain weight (or fail to lose it), you are putting your body under an
additional inflammatory burden. The threat is double-edged, because excessive
inflammation also makes it difficult for you to lose weight!
+ Exposure to toxins/
pollutants
+ Emotional stress
+ Lack of sleep

Bioactives &
Inflammation:
Did You Know?
The Body Needs Bioactives
Of the ten leading causes of mortality in the United States, chronic, low-level
inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of at least seven. These include heart
disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease,
diabetes, and nephritis. (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2011)
In order to function optimally, the body, its trillions of cells and its key organs
require bioactives. Bioactives are powerful nutrients and compounds that help the
body normalize body functions, slow the detrimental effects of free radical damage,
neutralize chronic inflammation and more.
The body requires a fragile balance between its numerous components for optimal
health — this balance is maintained in large part by the consumption of bioactive
compounds such as iridoids.
Key Bioactive Ingredients for
What the Science Shows
Healthy Inflammatory
Response
• Korean researchers recently determined that an iridoid
found in Cornelian cherry is able to inhibit inflammation
through a variety of mechanisms. (Source: Biol Pharm
Bull. 2011;34(7):959-66)
When considering bioactive supplements to
incorporate into your wellness regimen, there are
key ingredients that are particularly rich in iridoids
and other bioactive nutrients:
• A preclinical study from Chinese scientists found
that olive extract was able to suppress inflammatory
response common to athlerosclerosis in the arteries.
(Source: Eur J Nutr. 2008 Aug;47(5):235-43.)
Noni: Found in Tahiti, Southeast
Asia and other areas, noni has
been used in traditional cultures
for a variety of health needs. An
antioxidant powerhouse, noni
contains a variety of iridoids with adaptogenic
properties. Modern research shows that noni is able
to slow inflammation, reduce free radical damage
and provide relief for symptoms associated
with inflammation.
• Findings from a study published in Chemistry Central
Journal show noni was able to significantly lower levels
of C-reactive protein, a key marker for inflammation.
(Source: Chem Cent J. 2009; 3: 13.)
• A recent trial from Appalachian St. University involving
athletes found that blueberries were able to substantially
lower several inflammatory compounds for a marked
anti-inflammatory effect. (Source: Appl Physiol Nutr
Metab. 2011 Dec;36(6):976-84.)
Olive: Long known for its varied
health benefits, both the olive fruit
and leaf are rich sources of critical
nutrients, including bioactive iridoids
and antioxidants. Both the olive fruit
and leaf have significant anti-inflammatory properties.

Antioxidants
• Attracting widespread attention from scientists
• Used for centuries in traditional cultures
• Compounds that neutralize rogue free radicals
• Possess significant anti-inflammatory effects
• Help minimize the effects of stress
• Slow oxidative damage
• Neutralize free radicals
• Encourage the body to return to balance
• Inhibit inflammation in cells and throughout body
• Preserve cellular integrity
• Promote the “normalizing” of inflammatory response
• Protect cells and DNA from damage
• Help maintain healthy HDL cholesterol

• Protect all major organs from oxidative stress
support of several hundred studies
investigating its benefits. These
studies show the blueberries to be
rich in iridoids, antioxidants and
other nutrients that support healthy inflammatory
function in the body.
Cornelian Cherry: Long
used in traditional Asian medicine,
the fruit of the dogwood tree has
been used for a variety of ailments.
Cornelian cherries possess an
abundance of iridoids and adaptogenic compounds
that reduce inflammation and preserve cellular
integrit, among other benefits.
