Jaslok Community ophthalmic centre begins operations at new premises 23 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION LAUNCH OF 'INSIGHT' A BIOGRAPHY OF SANKARA NETHRALAYA The city of Mumbai has a pride of place in the inception and growth of Sankara Nethralaya and is home to some of its greatest benefactors like the Tatas, Bajaj group, Reliance and eminent jurist and former Indian Ambassador to the USA Shri Nani Palkhivala who bequeathed his entire life savings to its cause. Mumbai was chosen as the venue for the launch of the much awaited biography of Sankara Nethralaya titled 'Insight'- 'A Passion for Compassion'. The book is a poignant narration tracing Sankara Nethralaya's humble beginnings to its present stature of a world class eye care centre, narrated with élan by Shri VV.Ranganathan entrepreneur and story teller par excellence and coauthored by Shri George Skarias and Ms Meera Prasad. The beyond capacity crowd gathered on the evening of 20th March, 2012 at the Walchand Hirachand Hall the venue of the book launch strongly reiterated that Sankara Nethralaya has an indelible place in Mumbai's heart. The book was launched by long time friend and well-wisher of Sankara Nethralaya Shri Deepakh S.Parekh, Chairman, HDFC Ltd and the first copy was received by Shri Raju Barwale, Managing Director, Mahyco and member of Medical Research Foundation. This immensely readable account on Sankara Nethralaya has an interesting foreword by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, humanitarian and former President of the nation and absorbing chapters by a broad spectrum of luminaries sharing their Sankara Nethralaya experience. 'Insight' was launched in the city of its subject, Chennai on the 6th of July 2012 at the Sri VD.Swami Auditorium by Dr. S. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, ViceChancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and received by Senior Board Member, WellWisher and Donor Shri Ashok Mehta. Like most Sankara Nethralaya initiatives, the sale proceeds of 'Insight' would go towards providing cost free eye care to indigent patients. A note worthy point of the initiative is that none of the authors charged a penny for their colossal effort of compiling this great literary. 24 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION Dr Mayilvahana Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, The Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University releases book titled “Insight” Passion for compassion while Shri Ashok Mehta, a long time well wisher and Board Member receives the first copy as Dr.SS Badrinath looks on CONCLUSION Sankara Nethralaya continues to be a premier institution delivering quality eye care. It is spreading its wings on all the 3 focus areas of Ophthalmic Care, Free Treatment to poor patients and Teaching, Training and Fundamental Research as envisaged by the Founder Visionary, Dr. S S Badrinath. The performance is continuously climbing to greater heights with the passing years. The emphasis on Research and Tertiary Care is on the increase. We already have 4 patents granted to VRF, our Sister Organization. It is sincerely felt that in due course of time, these patents will generate income, thus proving to be cost effective. The detailed account of the Sankara Nethralaya Academy and the various courses conducted by them are already presented. It is expected that SN Academy will play a significant role in the future years and it is expected to turn out significant number of qualified personnel in the cause of Eye Care Delivery System in addition to being a revenue earner for Sankara Nethralaya. Threats & Concerns The achievements and the operational highlights have been listed in the previous section of this report. While the Institution is continuing to be a Referral Tertiary Care Centre in India. As already reported last year, it is facing extremely severe competition in the anterior segment from the new 25 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION groups of chain of eye hospitals. Our excellent facilities are under utilized as our experienced, well trained consultants are lured by the new entrant clinics with much higher remuneration. This results in increased expenditure to SN also and thus pushing up the eye care expenditure for the patients. While Sankara Nethralaya's standards of eye care delivery have been accredited with a NABH certification and international recognition, we are struggling to manage the cost in the face of the severe competition and at the same time we also need to keep updating with newer equipments & techniques and also expend for research & training. Human Relations The Founder, Dr. S S Badrinath and Dr.Vasanthi Badrinath are the real force behind this great Institution, continuously guiding and monitoring the progress of the Institution in every sphere. Their concerted actions in the continuous development of Consultants and their professional management style with succession plans have started yielding results. In May 2011, Dr. S. Bhaskaran was appointed as the Chairman of Sankara Nethralaya. Dr. Bhaskaran, Director, Internal Medicine, has over 3 decades of association with Sankara Nethralaya and brings considerable experience to the institution. The Vice Chairman, Dr. T S Surendran, Senior Consultants Dr.Prema Padmanabhan, Dr. Tarun Sharma, Dr. Pramod Bhende and Dr. L Vijaya , Dr. J Biswas all share a common vision as that of the Founder, Dr. S S Badrinath, which helps to continue the successful functioning of the Organization. Quality administrative support is provided by Dr. K S Vasan, ably assisted by Mr.P.R.Ravindran, Chief General Manager, Ms. Akila Ganesan, General Manager and Lt. Col. N Raghavan. Mr. V. Vaidyanathan, Board Member continues to render his expert guidance to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization. Our entire para medical and administrative staffs are an important link between the patients and the institution. They ensure the smooth functioning of the Organization. Regular training classes are being held to some of these groups. Shri M S Jayaraman, the Management Guru, is a rare personality whose only interest in training these cadres is to make SN a better organization. I record with gratitude the support of the dedicated Board of Management who despite their other priorities have always come forward to advise the Institution whenever needed even at very short notices. Our auditors, since the starting of this institution, M/s S. Viswanathan & co. are carrying out their assignment as a service to a non-for-profit organization for a token compensation. I record with appreciation the personal involvement of the partners Mr. C. N. Ramachandran and Mr. Chella Srinivasan. The internal auditors Mr. S. A. Bhatt are also very dedicated in their service to us. I thank them for their personal involvement in our case. SWAN, the women auxiliary wing of our organization is continuing their good service to Sankara Nethralaya. Their contributions to the welfare of indigent patients treated at Nethralaya are 26 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION praiseworthy. I salute these dedicated ladies guided by Ms. Surekha Ben, Mrs. Appukutty, Mrs. Haridas and many more. Our bankers, HDFC and SBI, are very considerate in taking up our requests and delivering their service very promptly to us. I thank them for their support. Lions club collaborate with us in a continuous manner on various sight-related projects. Lions International recognizes our dedicated service to the poor in a very satisfactory manner. Lion M. V. Raghunathan himself a very great donor , Lion G. V. Raman a great motivator, the ever present Lion S. N. Hari Narayanan are all part of us. Lion V. Hari Narayanan was recognized with an honour vide the “Friends of Nethralaya” function recently. I thank them on behalf of our entire organization for their help in taking care of our indigent patients. Mission for Vision Trust, Tulsi Trust, Shridi Sai Trust, Singhvi Trust are all committing funds continuously, supporting the free services rendered by us. I need to keep on record the finding of the Central Board of Customs and Excise that only SN and three other hospitals alone have rendered credible free eye care to poor and needy patients thus justifying the duty free purchases of special eye care instruments allowed to them .We are proud to be associated with such a great organization and congratulate all those who made it possible by holding the ethics ahead of other things. I am fortunate to record that this year saw the release of the chronicled history of the great institution and phenomenon Sankara Nethralaya, detailing its origin, growth, vision and passion for compassion.
