Annual Reflection
Fiscal Year July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014
Read any definition of the word “gift” and it says a gift is anything given or a talent. With that definition in
mind, we have been generously blessed with gifts in the fiscal year which ended in June.
Brazilian Ministry Celebrates 50 Years
In 1963, responding to the call of Pope John XXIII, the Joliet Franciscan Sisters founded a mission in Santa
Helena, Brazil. Armed with a barely passing knowledge of Portuguese and not quite knowing what to do once
they arrived, four Joliet Franciscan Sisters began a ministry of presence that continues to flourish today. In December 2014, 17 Sisters and one Associate, all from the U.S., traveled to Brazil and over the next several days
traveled to the cities and towns where the Sisters have ministered over 50 years. Everywhere the Sisters went,
they were greeted warmly and with the same love that has grown between the Brazilian Joliet Franciscans and
the people whom they serve. The celebration culminated on December 18 with a Mass and dinner attended by
800 townspeople. It was a wonderful gift which will remain in our hearts for years to come.
We are grateful to our Sisters and benefactors who helped make travel to Brazil from the U.S. possible through
their gifts of financial support and airline miles.
Sisters Celebrate Jubilee!
On June 21, we celebrated the Jubilees of twelve of our Sisters. Each of our Jubilarians is a gift to our Congregation in her own special way. Many of our Jubilarians ministered as teachers. Some found second, third and
even fourth “careers” in other ministries. Every year, we ask the Jubilarians to tell us about a special memory
or ministry and what living the Franciscan life means to them. Each answer is as unique as the Sister is herself.
Whether serving in schools, social service organizations, hospitals, parishes or as volunteers, 60-year Jubilarian
Sister Patricia Mitchell says it best, “All has been gift!”
Guardian Angel Home Begins a New Chapter
If you are familiar with the history of the Joliet Franciscans, you know that our first mission was Guardian Angel Home founded in 1865 as an orphanage. It was very special to us. In 1925, Guardian Angel Home moved
into its location on the corner of Theodore Street and Plainfield Road. Over the years as the needs of the times
changed, and Guardian Angel Home became Guardian Angel Community Services (GACS). No longer operating as an orphanage, GACS continued to focus on children, but extended programs to address the needs of the
family as well. In the latter half of 2013, we made the decision to sell the Guardian Angel Home building. You
might wonder how this would be considered a gift, but it is. We were able to sell the building to the University
of St. Francis (USF), another of our earlier missions. USF is relocating some of its administration offices to the
building, as well as the John and Cecily Leach College of Nursing. Remaining part of our Franciscan family,
the building is now known as St. Clare Campus – Guardian Angel Home. Knowing that our core ministry of
education will continue to flourish and grow in a building that was an important part of our history is indeed a
gift to our Congregation.

At Journey’s End
During this past fiscal year, eleven Sisters received the greatest gift any of us can receive: the gift of eternal
life. All came to the Congregation at different times, sometimes from different circumstances, but all for the
same reason – to serve God and His people. They were all teachers. They were teachers in both grade and high
schools. They were teachers at the College of St. Francis, now the University of St. Francis. They were teachers in adult and religious education classes. More importantly, they were always learning.
We fondly remember: Sister Mary Ann (Mary Lawrence) Glascott, 1937 – 2013; Sister Anne Marie (Grace
Cecile) Furiel, 1925 – 2013; Sister M. Alcuin Kelly, 1917 – 2013; Sister Patricia (Mary Frances de Sales) David, 1937 – 2013; Sister Tecla (Mary Cephas) Snyder, 1923 – 2013; Sister June (Donald Marie) Marshall, 1934
– 2013; Sister Rita (Mary Alexander) Greene, 1919 – 2013; Sister Kathleen Kirk, 1916 – 2014; Sister Marianne
(Mary Deborah) Cardosi, 1930 – 2014; and Sister Andrea Prindes, 1922 – 2014.
These eleven dedicated Sisters were a gift to our Congregation and to all whose lives were impacted by their
very presence.
The Gift of You
We have all heard the phrase “good things come in small packages.” We can all agree that an envelope is a
small package. But be assured that what is inside each envelope is anything but small. There is no such thing
as a small gift. Every single gift we receive is important and respected as is the individual or organization sending it to us. With that in mind, we willingly share with you that in the last fiscal year, you generously donated
