Immerse Yourself in the Arts at Sonoma Community Center The mission of Sonoma Community Center’s arts education program is to engage and inspire the community with an integrated array of hands-on classes, exhibitions, residencies and public programs. Our classes are staffed by professional artists who focus on foundational skills in fine art, ceramics, music, movement and sustainable living. CERAMICS PAINTING Handbuilding with Beverly Beverly Prevost TUE MAR 24-MAY 12 6-9 pm 207-15-2 Be curious! Explore new construction processes (pinch, coil, slabs) and combine them to your satisfaction. Ask questions, take chances and learn new ways to be successful with clay. Each student will be asked to develop a project which can be discussed and evaluated in class. $175 /$157 members • Intermediate • Ages 18+ Abstract Sculptures and Vessels Abstract Painting Printmaking Open Studio Kathleen Thompson A. Using shape, form, color and line, students will experiment and create compositions that exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Re-purpose them into delightful works of art, to be treasured for years to come! Join Emily Marks as she explores the history of altered books, focusing on their current transformations in the book art world. Then, using old books and materials, transform these into a brand new art piece to take home at the conclusion of the workshop. Creations will not be limited to the conventional book but will encompass a range from journals to altars. Students will learn skills and techniques that are applicable to other forms along the way, such as painting on paper, collage, weaving, sewing, embroidering, and cutting and sanding with a Dremel tool. All levels welcome. Students are encouraged to bring materials to include in their project. Ages 18+ JEWELRY THU MAR 19-APR 23 9am-4pm 413-15-3 Working from photographs, students will explore various approaches to painting the human figure in watercolor—quick indications, close value indication, and figurative impressionism. Painting the figure is simply observing the effect of light and shadow on volume. The workshop is not about copying per se, but about interpretation. Traditional inspiration will come from Norway, Sweden and Scotland. Kaffe Fasset’s way of working with short strands of yarn will also be introduced. Mary will guide the students in forming, texturing, and sizing their creations on day one. Day two will cover finishing and polishing. Each student will leave with a finished piece. A $35 materials fee will be collected by the instructor for 100 grams of bronze clay, handouts and use of firing and polishing tools. Class fee: $90/$81 members • All levels • Ages 18+ This is a workshop for experienced students who’d like to immerse themselves in two days of painting. Students will try out various acrylic techniques with the aim of completing one large painting on canvas. Please bring one already-stretched canvas (no larger than 24” x 30”) and an image, photo, or still life you want to render in paint. We will explore themes of color harmony, composition, subject matter and abstract vs. representational art with the goal of creating compelling work that invites the viewer to continue looking. Using metal clay, Mary will guide students in ringmaking and setting fire-in-place stones. Impress and amaze your family and friends when you arrive home wearing your own handcrafted fine silver ring! All tools are provided by the instructor. A $55 materials fee will be collected by the instructor and will include 20 grams of silver metal clay, handouts, firing, finishing and a selection of faceted stones. The classes provide group recreational exercise designed to provide people of all ages and a wide range of physical abilities with a joint friendly exercise alternative. Basic chords, strumming, playing songs, single note playing, tuning, reading tablature and chord diagrams will be covered. Songs from a variety of rock, folk and blues will be used for teaching. Basic music concepts and theory will also be taught.
