In case of bone marrow transplantation absence from school lasts six to twelve months. 4 Hospital School Born in 1988, provides 2 of Primary school teachers, 3 Secondary school teachers , 3 teachers for High school and, recently, 1 teacher for children with Special Needs. 6 AND WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP UP WITH YOUR SCHOOL-WORK. Therapeutic Alliance Child/family members and multidisciplinary health care members, cooperate both individually and as a group This Therapeutic Alliance involves both parts working together with a common purpose pooling resources toward a common goal: treating the cancer and minimizing its medical and psychosocial side-effects. 7 8 Aim of therapeutic alliance To offer every child and family a holistic approach (medical, psychological, social and educational), in order to assure as many children as possible an “effective treatment” the highest possible quality of life. 9 CHILDHOOD CANCER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FAMILY ALLIANCE PARENTS ASSOCIATION INSTITUTIONS VOLUNTEERS SOCIETY CURE NORMAL LIFE 10 Educational School Program HOSPITAL DIAGNOSIS Doctors Teachers Social Worker Psychologist Pedagogist CHILD FAMILY COMMUNICATION SCHOOL Director Teachers School mates LEAFLETS AND LETTERS TO THE SCHOOL OF ORIGIN TELEPHONE CALLS DOCTOR’S VISIT TO THE SCHOOL OF ORIGIN Meetings: -Weekly with the staff -Weekly with the psychologist -Monthly with the pedagogist -Yearly with the Director of Pediatric Clinic for information and evaluation -Yearly for medical up-dating INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM EVALUATION 11 Aim of hospital school The common aim of hospital school is to assure sick children the continuity of education, even during the period of illness Purposes: Keeping in contact with the reality of the child in hospital and outside world through school activities Motivate the interest in cognitive activities Facilitating the return to the school of origin Recovering the autonomy and the ability to organize everyday life 12 Educational Program In our Center hospital teachers continue to follow the educational program of every child. After diagnosis the hospital staff undertake contacts with the teachers at the school of origin, via a letter to the headmaster and an informational booklet including information about the disease and how to cope with the ill child. 13 THE EDUCATIONAL PATH Welcome Teaching activity Reintegration into the school of origin 14 WELCOME to understand and answer the pupil's needs and expectations to promote a faster integration in the hospital to create good conditions to start the educational relationship 15 TEACHING ACTIVITY ....according to a didactic planning suited to follow the dynamic situations ... o A teaching curriculum arranged with the pupil's school of origin, to establish a working relationship from the beginning o realization of interdisciplinary projects designed as containers which stimulate the interest and the expressiveness of the pupil 16 REINTEGRATION Particular attention is given to the time when the student is allowed to return to the school of origin... o When possible, one of the doctors goes to the school of origin and explains the medical aspects of leukemia to the teachers and to the child’s classmates. The sick child usually takes part in this activity and is actively involved “Children – Health – Future. Our time belongs to the children and children who were torn from the grips of death cannot be neglected in school, in a society that believes in its future. Schooling does not follow the cure.
